I loved the early Doobies before Michael joined. He came in just when Tom Johnston was forced to take a hiatus due to health problems. The Doobies became a different band with a new sound under MacDonald’s influence.
Brings tears to my eyes. They are from my home town of San Jose, California. The Doobie Brothers had so many hits. So many wonderful memories from the '70's.

Michael left and Tom returned and they are still performing. Another of their songs (they did it in a Midnight special) is JESUS IS JUST ALRIGHT.
And now, they are both (Tom and Michael) back with the group and performing, sadly Covid prevented them from touring last year, but they have dates scheduled again now. Early Doobie Brothers: three guitarists, bass, and two drummers. Wicked grooves. Try "China Grove" and "Long Train Running" for rockers, or "South City Midnight Lady" for a very pretty tune.

Having the blessing of seeing and hearing the Doobie Bros. two times in the very early years, with Tom Johnston as lead vocalist, was truly a lifetime highlight and great memory. At the time my comment was ‘they’re a better studio band, than a live band’, but watching this video shows that perhaps I caught them on a few bad nights. Harri, the Doobie Brothers were one of _the greatest_ rock bands of the 1970s! Finally, after selling many, many millions of records over a 50 year period the RRHoF inducted them last year. It is a disgrace it took the RRHoF so long to do it. They are one of the truly great rhythm rock and roll bands ever, and they often have absolutely scorching lead electric guitars solos! Tom Johnston was their original lead singer with Patrick Simmons assuming responsibilities from time to time. Both would switch from lead to rhythm guitar as the occasion required. Tiran Porter was their original bassist and he was wonderful! You have just scratched the surface of their best era, their 2nd through 5th albums. Their musicianship is legendary and they would often share studio musicians like guitar great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter with Steely Dan. Most people who were fans of the original Doobie Brothers were not at all happy that Michael McDonald took over lead vocals from Tom Johnston. But Tom grew a terrible ulcer from not eating properly (and perhaps other things) and he had to leave the band after their fifth album "Stampede" in 1976. Eventually he returned and McDonald left but they have seldom scaled the heights of excellence they had in the early to mid 1970s when Ted Templeman was their producer. They are still touring to this day and their catalogue of hits is immense! If I might suggest one of their best songs, and my personal favourite, react to "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman." It is the most hauntingly beautiful blues based love song they ever did, and the electric blues lead guitar is to die for! I'm not kidding and I hope you take me seriously and do it! There is no good concert footage of them playing it, but the single is superb and the blues lead guitar is achingly beautiful! 🎸🎸🎸 Here is the link to it: th-cam.com/video/3nLRM-6gPek/w-d-xo.html

Takin it to the streets is a MUST!!
So happy and upbeat!!!
China Grove is a must, Tom Johnston is amazing. Also this version by him for the 'Playing for Change' charity from a couple years back is a must, musicians from all around the world laying down overdubs along with Tom, who is still in amazing vocal shape.
China Grove is a must. And even though Black Water is a bit corny it always had a special place in my heart. Must listen to.
Happy music. Happy times 😊
Yeah, bro! watching that bassist...he was pretty busy, and yet the whole band was SO tight! My mother is deaf in one ear from going to a DB concert, back when bands used to compete for maximum spl! : )
