- How does Social Security work for a federal spouse? There are two basic options that any spouse has - collecting based on their own benefit or collecting based on their spouse's benefit. There are some details that are helpful to know.

There's another scenario that rarely get covered and what little there is I've seen conflicting info. That is if spouse 1 collects at 62, but spouse 2 delays taking the spousal benefit. For example w/ an FRA of 67: Spouse 1 accepts the 30% reduction and collects $2000 at 62. But spouse 2 decides to wait until 67 to maximize their 50% rule. Let's say spouse 1 FRA benefit is $3000 at age 67. Is the spousal benefit $1000 (half the primaries early withdrawal of $2000) or is it $1500 (half the primaries full benefit of $3000 even though the primary never collected that)?
I simplified the numbers here for ease. Thanks.
great question! It would be $1500. It's based on your age when you file and your spouse's benefit at FRA.
A question if you have a moment. My spouse is 6 years younger than me, and our social security payments will be about the same. My thought was I wait until at least 67, and she draws early (62). Is that an ideal strategy? Thank you.
It’s tough to give advice on the internet. I would recommend considering the pros and cons of each before collecting and then yes, it could be a good fit for you
Thank you. I appreciate your time.
I’m trying to decide how hard it will be to give up the opm subsidy at 62 and wait on social security. Time well tell.
