- Despite his brutal murder by the crown in 1539, Abbot Richard Whiting is still fondly remembered by the townsfolk of Glastonbury.
A kind, spiritual and well educated man, he was highly regarded by the community both inside and outside the abbey.
So how did this leading figure come to such a gruesome end?
If you come for a walk around what’s left of his home and town, I will explain…
With thanks to the staff of Glastonbury Abbey.

Great docu btw, well put together
That was really interesting (and very gruesome). I don’t think I have heard that before and history often goes over my head, but I am likely to remember it now as you narrated and illustrated it so engagingly.
I was staying near the Tower of London the other day and was thinking it’s high time that I go back to refresh my faded childhood memories of it. When I do visit, I will remember this story about Whiting being taken there.
A really enjoyable vídeo Luke with gorgeous Glastonbury scenery too.
Thank you Louise! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😃🙏
Excellent mini-doc! Just subscribed and look forward to more of your videos. Greetings from the beautiful Hudson Valley.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you liked it 😃
This is a fascinating video of a piece of history of which I was not aware.
I visited Glastonbury Abbey a few years back now and also visited the Bishop's Gardens.
Thank you! It’s really interesting story isn’t it.
I always loved the atmosphere of the Abbey and the little chapel dedicated to St Anne (I think?)
A historically important story and a lovely video.
Perfect little documentary!
Not exactly a god-botherer myself but the stories of Dissolution never fail to stir some measure of sadness.
I’m exactly the same as you! I find it all quite sad too. Thanks for the lovely comment!
I spent many happy hours sitting in its little chapel before it got all touristy, with a built experience centre.
It was so peaceful for meditation
They did not deserve that.
