Richard Whiting: the rise and gruesome fall of the last Abbot of Glastonbury
Despite his brutal murder by the crown in 1539, Abbot Richard Whiting is still fondly remembered by the townsfolk of Glastonbury.
A kind, spiritual and well educated man, he was highly regarded by the community both inside and outside the abbey.
So how did this leading figure come to such a gruesome end?
If you come for a walk around what’s left of his home and town, I will explain…
With thanks to the staff of Glastonbury Abbey.

มุมมอง 73หลายเดือนก่อน
Muchelney Abbey is a hidden gem, tucked away on the Somerset Levels near Langport - out of reach to most, just how the earliest monks wanted it. As a Benedictine monastery, its wealth and prosperity grew strong over many centuries, until it was demolished in 1538 during King Henry VIII’s famous dissolution of the monasteries. Discover the rise and fall of Muchelney Abbey.

มุมมอง 5332 หลายเดือนก่อน
When the late wildlife artist David Shepherd set up the East Somerset Railway back in 1974 it all started with little brake van rides. Skip forward to 2024 and it’s a booming heritage attraction, run mainly by volunteers who welcome thousands of passengers every year. But there’s more than just the 50 years of history - this is the story of the East Somerset Railway.

Secret WW2 bunker on Somerset’s Mendip Hills: A brief story of Starfish!
มุมมอง 11K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
When the bombs started falling on Britain in World War 2; a secret task force was assembled to fool the Germans into dropping their bombs harmlessly on empty countryside. Their legacy is what remains high atop the Mendip Hills in Somerset, in the form of a still intact bunker. They called it Starfish.

Good video! Thinking of visiting soon, do you know if I would have to pay to get on the platform?
They did not deserve that.
There are more hobby horses not just the sailors jorse
Great docu btw, well put together
I spent many happy hours sitting in its little chapel before it got all touristy, with a built experience centre. It was so peaceful for meditation
I'm wondering about local parish records. Might they hold information about Ann Rice and any subsequent births, potential marriage and death?
Perfect little documentary! Not exactly a god-botherer myself but the stories of Dissolution never fail to stir some measure of sadness.
I’m exactly the same as you! I find it all quite sad too. Thanks for the lovely comment!
Excellent mini-doc! Just subscribed and look forward to more of your videos. Greetings from the beautiful Hudson Valley.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you liked it 😃
Pardoned by the crown of what? That would be a further travesty. His only crime was that of being a Catholic.
And still today your average Englishman harbors a visceral hatred of Catholics
I used to skydive at Dunkeswell most weekends weather permitting.
This is a fascinating video of a piece of history of which I was not aware. I visited Glastonbury Abbey a few years back now and also visited the Bishop's Gardens.
Thank you! It’s really interesting story isn’t it.
I always loved the atmosphere of the Abbey and the little chapel dedicated to St Anne (I think?) A historically important story and a lovely video.
That was really interesting (and very gruesome). I don’t think I have heard that before and history often goes over my head, but I am likely to remember it now as you narrated and illustrated it so engagingly. I was staying near the Tower of London the other day and was thinking it’s high time that I go back to refresh my faded childhood memories of it. When I do visit, I will remember this story about Whiting being taken there. A really enjoyable vídeo Luke with gorgeous Glastonbury scenery too.
Thank you Louise! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😃🙏
and 4 is IIII XD?
I live here 👍
I live in Somerset
I live near evercreetch
There was a rail spur (reportedly from the main rail tunnel), into a very different and much larger Mendips bunker. Dad said he'd been involved in supplying machine tools for it, supposedly for building an aeroengine factory. Hesaid it was plagued with poor industrial relations and never produced anything.
This sounds such an interesting tradition and lots of fun. I have not been able to see it yet myself in person, but would love to one year, Another fabulous video! TH-cam suggested your showreel to me too. I really enjoyed seeing that compilation of superbly narrated and presented stories. Your presentation and editing are really engaging. You are brilliant on the radio and you’d be equally brilliant on TV too.
Its actually not just a May Day tradition. I think you need to do some googling before you go posting a video about something that you know nothing about… The other may day hobby horse tradition is in Padstow and the other (not May day) is the hunting of the Earl of Rone
What an ignorant comment. I think you need to learn how to speak to people before commenting on a complete strangers work. I KNOW about the Padstow Obby Oss. I did not say this tradition was unique in any way. In fact I feature Padstow in a longer video which is not on YT because YT shorts are 60 seconds. Maybe you should do a video on the others if you’re the font of all knowledge. I look forward to seeing them.
@@The_Knight_Tales I was just saying that you did not specifically mention that you were talking about Minehead which lead to the impression that you were talking about all hobby horse traditions similar to the one.
@@user-jf2hx2sj9i Yes I did. If you’d listened instead of trying to find fault you would have heard “It involves lots of music, dancing and parading this brightly coloured horse around the streets of Minehead”. Whats the next quibble? The text was the wrong colour?
@@user-jf2hx2sj9i Oh and the caption even says “the Minehead hobby horse” 😂😂
@@The_Knight_Tales I think it was just that it sounded like you were saying it was the only hobby horse tradition. mb babes x
I see this every year
Good enough reason.
I often pass here on the way to Wells, gonna see the clock irl next time. Funny how Somerset is actually seeing some attention
I was fixated on the four being "IIII" instead of "IV".
This is actually quite common. Especially for clocks.
@@tutacat I know. It annoys me.
It was my 5×uncle who painted the Roman numerals on that clock thats my claim to fame anyway 😂
I'm from wookey hole 😊
😢😢😭😭😭😭😭
Gosh, what memories to have to live with! Thanks Luke! This has really made me think and wonder how I would have reacted in the same same situation.
Really interesting! Looking forward to Part 2 :-)
Available to watch now ☺️👍
@@The_Knight_Tales Oh brilliant! Thank you ! I will watch it now!
Far more likely the man given the perilous task of painting on the clock numerals in 1788 was innumerate. In those days you counted sheep by putting a straw in a pot for each one, and if a straw was left over after getting them through the gate, you knew to go looking for a lost sheep. That however doesn’t tell as good a story.
Can you do videos about Bridgwater 🥺🥺🥺
One is in the pipeline ☺️👍 watch this space
@@The_Knight_Tales LETS GO I LOVE BRIDGWATER (is it bridgy castle by any chance?)
@@Ihatesnocthesockthat would be telling! 😉
I love somerset
Also the number 4 is wrong but you find that in a lot of clocks
Its not wrong, its just slightly archaic. The Romans themselves used 'IIII' as four before they used 'IV'.
Don't bother going to Evercreech, it's a shit boring town.
How funny. Everything you just said is wrong. Evercreech is a village too.
The same can be said of the entirety of Somerset.
@@lysandersensale2792 true
@The_Knight_Tales fine it's a boring village
@@lysandersensale2792 I’d love to know what Somerset did to you that formed such an incredibly wrong opinion. 😂
Not utterly effective as the german version of "Oboe" , called "Knickebein" led them to their targets at night
I bet you’re fun at parties.
Love your little shorts. As a Bridgwater lad and a lover of history it's great to see and hear new stuff.... You should do some videos on the old S&D line
Thought this was going to erupt into X Gonna Give it To Ya.
Lol I always thought what that church was about
I live near here lol
Same lol 😂
Some years ago I found a bunker on the hills above Clydach in the Swansea valley. I took some research to discover it was a former Starfish site.
Does coming back at 11am count?
Haha maybe that was the plan!
huh never noticed and im from shepton haha
I live near here
You'd enjoy the Middlesbrough starfish bunker. Lots of litter usually but plenty of local litter pickers. It's cool to see the original and know more history of them
They done the same here Norfolk UK starfish sites and col turner and dummy airfields brilliant video thank you for sharing with us 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Interesteing
Looks exactly like the one on crow hill outside halifax
I'm creeped out I live near here
I didn't guess, I saw that the X was missing. If I was guessing, I'd answer that the clock runs backwards or never tells the correct time.
