That ground ice is neither hoarfrost nor rime ice. The ice crystals on the ground are known as needle ice and are formed when ground temp is above freezing and air temp is below freezing moisture is drawn out of the ground and freezes into those crystalline needle like structures. I agree, those structures can be very beautiful. As a kid I used to love watching frost form on the kitchen windows at home. It is really intriguing to watch it creep across the glass. Rime ice is essentially frozen fog.

A few hammock tips. You can use a ridge line with slip knots on it so your tarp can slide back and forth and be taunter and sag less between the trees. You can use soft shackles or carrabiners at the tree end of your straps. This way you can clip your strap and pull out your strap and Hammock and walk to the other tree. Welcome to hammocks I am glad you gave it a second chance. :)

My son uses a red carabiner on the head end of his hammock. RED rhymes with HEAD. So it's easy for him to figure out which end should be higher. You could also use red paracord or even a red hair tie to tie on that end. 🙂

Sleeping pad is definitely not made for hammocks, it tends to wrap around me in single-layer hammock and slips to side in double-layer one. I think a full-length underquilt will be more comfortable. Of cause, you cannot use underquilt when sleeping on a ground, but in a woodland good places for hammock occurs more often than a good place for tent.

Loved the video. I find the trees that look right, then hang the tarp. I use the tarp as a guide to center the hammock under, and then stake the tarp out. Backpack clipped at the foot end by the carry strap, then I pull the bottom of the pack up and clip the hip belt over the ridge-line. It keeps it up out of the rain and stops it from swinging around in the wind at night. It took a couple of years for me to leave my full pad at home. Now I have a small torso pad (hips to shoulders) that I use as a foot pad with my partial underquilt. If its cold out, I double up my partial 20F underquilt with my full length 40F - toasty into the teens. I haven't slept in a tent in years.

I've only tried hammocks for a few minutes. Even with advice on aligning myself diagonal to the guy lines, I could not find what felt like a natural sleeping position. But you must have. Why do you prefer the hammock? What tricks are used to attain a comfortable sleeping position? And, what brand/model hammock do you recommend?

    • @timlois
      @timlois 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@gregparrott The cross lay is the key, which it sounds like you've tried. There are a few factors in achieving comfort in this position. First is hammock selection. I personally use a Dutchware Chameleon, 11-foot. But, other cottage companies like Hammock Gear, Dream Hammock, and a few others are very good and preferred by others. The second is "the perfect hang" In fact, there's a book and website by that name. You want enough sag in your suspension to provide a 30 degree angle from the ground. You also need a ridgeline, set at about 83% if the total hammock length. This provides the proper sag to allow the cross-lay. Third is just practice. It helps if you can do this at home under ideal conditions to get everything dialed in just perfectly. Trail and error.
But, I know hammocks are not for everyone. I didn't get them at first either. But, I stuck it out and did some research and I will never go back to ground sleeping. I used to toss and turn, waking up frequently and just praying for sunrise. Now I can sleep in as long as I want. I get into full, r.e.m. sleep with dreams and everything. I was never able to quite accomplish that on my air matress.

Great trip and video. A couple of tips from a hammock camper - Get a snakeskin for your tarp, not only is management easier, but if you hang it first (bad weather you will anyhow), you can use it to measure tree distance then still easily adjust it after hanging your hammock. I've also found that when nearing dusk that it's best not to pass up a good set of trees in order to gain more miles. That one is goal dependent though. Happy hammocking, thanks for sharing.

Then again, I’m sure he could never have imagined videos either. 😄

    1.Under quilt isn’t adjusted right.
2.If you skip on the sleeping pad in your hammock you can sleep “the Brazilian way” that means when you you are diagonal in your hammock you are able to lay flat . That means you could potentially sleep on your side as well instead of being a human Banana .

Yes, yes, yes. I've been trying to explain "the Brazilian Way" to others for years, but they won't listen and many end up selling or throwing their hammocks away.

Well young lady I'm glad to see that you're out and about for part 3 of this 100 mile trip this time you are on the hammock side of things
I'm hoping that you decided to view a few hammock put up videos from Frozen or from shrug or syntax 77

Again awesome video and swing with care

Dixie, I wish I could trade you some hammock camping skills for some backpacking skills. Haha! Tents tend to be more user friendly until you get your hammock and hammock gear dialed in. Once you have it, though, I don't think you would ever go back. I know I won't ever sleep on the ground again unless I'm above the tree line and there are no other options. Happy Trails!

Really enjoying the pace of these videos that combine “walking porn” (thru hiking footage) with gear testing, plus oh so soothing classical music interludes. It’s just very natural for the things you’re showing, kind of unusual, and a joy to watch!

Congrats on finishing the Pinhoti trail, and also for taking the risk of using a new sleep system for an extended portion of the trip! It looks like you've figured out the type of hang you need to shoot for with the hammock. One bit of advice with your underquilt, it looks as though you may need to shorten the primary suspension a bit, so that it rests higher up on the hammock. A good rule of thumb is when your hammock is completely empty, the UQ should lift the hammock body upwards. This will ensure that it is snugged up against you when you're lying in the hammock. Pull one side up over your shoulder, and then pull the other side up until the suspension cord is above your feet.
If you do this, you'll have much better success with the UQ.

Dixie, please don't give up on hammocking ... one you get the hang of it, it can't be beat. If you know it's total length, you can walk it off before strapping your suspension system to the trees. I make sure the hammock is strung up good before stringing the tarp ... and when I do the tarp, I tie the ridgeline taught (that's the key). I use an ENO hammock sleep system ... is a mite heavier than the ultralight tents, but I can set it anywhere and even in the dark. Hope you keep giving it a try.

Surely would love to know more of the backstory on who saw that opportunity and decided to set that up.

I love camping in my Warbonnet hammock with the super fly tarp. I have the two layers of fabric bottom and sleep well with a yoga mat between them and don't use a pad under my 30 degree sleeping bag with no under quilt camping in Temps in the low 50s high 40s.

A few things I've learned after a few years of hammock camping. A permanent ridgeline on the hammock makes for faster setup of a comfortable hang. I cant tell from the videos but I couldn't see a hammock ridgeline.
If you know your will be hiking anywhere with trees (vs crossing a plain or desert) you can ditch the sleeping pad for weight. Hammock warmth is really all about a good underquilt.

  • @PabloP169

Finding a suitable place to hang your hammock is the main hassle that I have had with them. I have several tents, swags, and a new hammock. As a young bloke, I spent several weeks car camping using an ex-military Jungle hammock and it was the bee's knees, as it was all one unit. But it was very bulky and weighed a ton, so no good for backpacking. I guess the bottom line from me is it depends very much on what you are doing and where.

Dixie, the info. here has been so helpful, I almost always end up with the products you suggest even if I try a few others first. In my opinion your reviews are by far the best. there's a couple other guys doing reviews and some are pretty accurate but not nearly as fun to watch. Thank you for all of that!!! I have to comment on the stealing thing, I've had a situation like it. Several years ago the cops raided my house and took me to jail. I have no idea how they got a warrant but they went in like they were raiding a drug dealer tearing up everything, traumatized my dog she was never the same after that I know she was abused. I didn't understand it at the time... the profile fit I guess and just added fuel to suspicion making it a witch hunt. The profile wasn't much I thought but looking back I had some pretty nice cars they did damage intentionally while searching, 50,000 rounds of ammo in the garage, fine art on the walls couple Rolex watches laying around. well they didn't find anything because I work my ass off and have never even smoked a joint. I was 30 years old and we lived more than anyone so it probably pissed someone off and maybe I had kicked their ass or went out with their girlfriend I'm guessing thats it really. I have cops that are friends but I don't trust the system anymore. Like I said they did take me to jail while I was in the booking area for an extended period, after a couple hours of typing up all kinds of stuff one of my cop buddies walked in, witch was bad in itself, anyway he vouched for me we had known each other for years. I think the oh shit moment started to hit about then, probably finding out there wasn't anything in my house either. they started going into this long story about what a great deal they were going to make me, what they could be charging me with but their not going to. Well at this point there's been a lot of damage done and they were not going to let me go because of liability I'm guessing. they said we'll just give you this little nothing charge, you'll plead out on it and it'll go away. How's that a good deal, I've got the grill going in the back yard a couple hours ago now I'm in cuffs and I already knew they had torn the crap out of my house, checked stuff into evidence I would never see again and for nothing, I had uncut currency they folded up and sent it to secret service to see if it was counterfeit... sorry I didn't mean to write a book here, I just understand how insulting it can be. those things can go so far south. I'm so glad that one turned out ok for you. there are some cops that would have went the other way with that video, they just take it how they want to sometimes and once your in the system your defending yourself there's no way out. it happens every day in every city. Most lawyers will tell you to never talk to the cops even if your innocent, they are only gathering info. to convict you. they are frequently wrong. its very risky even if it seems safe, if they are trying to put together a case, thats where their mindset is in that moment, sometimes they take something out of context, small misunderstandings can have very big consequences in these cases.
Back to the good stuff:) thank you again for all your awesomeness! I wouldn't have the great pack that I have now without your help:)... be carefull out there too, you get close to some real stuff sometimes:)
