I feel like both L&S and InrangeTV simply were operating out of ignorance here. Astroturfing, and then later the product turning out to be very mid or even complete trash occurs more often than not. Pointing out that the LP-1 had the hallmarks of a stereotypical astroturfing campaign is not a hot take. It literally did. There we no negative reviews at all and you couldn't buy it (without a long wait). Quite literally the definition of a red flag. Now not every market blitz means the product is trash, it just means consumers should operate under caution until the product is purchasable by the market as a whole (and sufficient time has passed). I understand L&S perhaps not understanding this distinction, and thus taking Hops statement as a direct attack. But I'm a bit flabbergasted that InrangeTV reacted(Sinistral) in such a emotional manner to such a basic comment. It makes me seriously question objectivity where I didn't before.

Optic durability is such a weird topic. The general engineering idea is to make it work with a margin of safety, but by focusing on *durability*, you quickly reach the point of diminishing returns. In other words, obsession with protection makes it needlessly heavy and costly. I know it sounds snobby, but it’s more important to “shape up” than to “bulk up”. By that, I mean that it’s better to train to be more careful and clean under stress than to buy the nuclear option. Ultimately, optics are just tools. If the user is a machine that turns optics into scrap metal, maybe change should start at the user, not the optic.
Mike, formerly of Swampfox Optics, basically explained that their optics were heavy because a lot of their market were guys who test optics by beating it against a tree. Just look at the 1x Blade - 13oz! Brick shithouse! I forget what bigger channel tested the Arrowhead LPVO by giving it to a Wookie who threw the rifle over dunes and shot it with birdshot.
Optic durability is that way because at one point optics were not considered rugged enough for combat use. And then "combat approved" optics and laser aiming modules got killed by the SCAR 17 due to a quirk in recoil impulse and harmonics, which lead to products being redesigned to handle this unforseen situation. While there's a point of diminishing returns you always have the issue of unknowns. Like Sig making a pistol that was drop safe because it passed a drop safety test. It just happened that the pistol would go off if dropped at a specific angle, but that wasn't part of the safety test. Point being, you shouldn't be obsessed with durability but if you design something for the "shape up" with zero concern for bulk, something really stupid is going to kill it and you'll have to redesign the thing.
Very true. Of course, there's stupidly fragile optics like the OKP-7 (would love to see Hop review it for shits and giggles), but you're definitely right.

The real hypocritical part was that the L&S CEO is hyper defensive of the LP-1 having so much "R&D time" while also admitting in the same breath that they "borrowed" a lot of LCO internals. Essentially, they spent a couple of years ripping off the LCO and editing their homework just enough to claim the R&D was a painstakingly long & expensive journey in originality.
I think the R&D is questionable. They said they "engineered" it but like you said they copied the LCO, but then they bounced ideas back and forth w Hong Kong for a year and a half. So when it was finally produced they didn't own the earlier designs. Which opened it up to Turkey to produce an earlier version (hence the CR2 battery) I bought one of the very first LP1s and was also one of the first to do a video review. It wasn't a negative video but I didn't gush over it so it mostly went ignored. They thanked other video creators but guess mine wasnt up to par. I also didn't compare it to the Aimpoint/Eotech, which was the style at the time. It sits at a weird inbetween where it has plenty of daylight settings if it was to be an optic designed with NV in mind, but it doesn't seem like it has the brightness settings from my guesstimations, so the lack of an extra 2 or 3 daylight settings in the middle are kinda missed
@@gamez4420 They didn't get involved in the drama because the guy had negative things to say about the optic. Especially cuz I was one of the people that bought from them 😅
Did you watch all of the related content? It's a little deeper than focustripp not liking the optic. His presentation of the testing and communication was dishonest, that's really hard to dispute. It's just as hard to swallow his feigned indignation over "bribery" when he runs a site and channel that transparently promotes certain products in exchange for money. The outrage seemed much more artificial than the hype around the optic, and stinks of industry hit job. No detractions of the LP-1 - it having commonality with or being almost identical to other optics (SIG & holosun), it using parts sourced overseas (every single optic), or building relationships with reviewers or contractors (SIG) - is exclusive to L&S. And the idea of industry "friendships" without money changing hands coloring or informing a review is a really big swing from a TFB TV contributor, arguably the biggest beneficiaries of this treatment in the community. One thing has always been true of the free market - it's far more cost effective to crush or buy out a competitor than it is to invest in the requisite R&D to innovate or engineer something that provides an advancement. There hasn't been innovation from any of them in a long time, and it has a lot to do with the insane markups they're able to demand due to their DoD pricing.

In the wild red dots tend to hang out on a single Picatinny rail, you should be able to see them at ranges in your local area. I hear they are all over the US now and almost have become an invasive species. They are mostly black but some have a little green or red in them. Very interesting watching them in their natural habitat.
Once a red dot has found its rail it will typically stay for the rest of its life. Only rarely does one migrate, only doing so when it's home falls into disrepair and is no longer suitable. This invasive species introduced from Sweden has quickly taken root across the Continental United States, stealing precious habitat from indigenous species of optics.

Any company that does Holosun's shake to wake Motac system probably gets the electronics from Holosun's parent company. If you buy the parts from China and assemble it in the US, you can call it assembled in USA on the packaging. Sig Romeo 7s is under $100 usually, so I'm perfectly happy with that Holosun optic lol
You briefly mentioned things along the line of Berry compliance, with Sigs optics being mostly made in mostly democratic countries. Not all of their optics need to be, just ones that are being sold to the Army, and even then a lot of components can be exempt from sourcing them from China, especially if they can prove that it wouldn't be feasible to pay to have someone else make a component that's readily available in a country of non ideal origin.
Which opened it up to Turkey to produce an earlier version (hence the CR2 battery)
I bought one of the very first LP1s and was also one of the first to do a video review. It wasn't a negative video but I didn't gush over it so it mostly went ignored. They thanked other video creators but guess mine wasnt up to par. I also didn't compare it to the Aimpoint/Eotech, which was the style at the time.
I was also about to buy their pistol sight and asked them a question, and they never got back to me (even though I bought the LP1 previously) I had to search around reddit until I found the answer. Reddit gonn reddit. It's a hive of scum and villainy.
@@HawaiiFoodAndFun Maybe, but if you make something in China, you can't expect to "own" your designs and keep them secret since IP is basically unheard of

Thank you for actually talking about the fact that optics manufacturers and company’s aren’t able to make all parts in house and that some companies have products both made in China and in the US. Most people are so black and white about where and how something is made when it comes to that specifically.
I worked behind the gunbar at a certain "Academic" sporting goods store, had this guy come in with his grandson to buy a scope for his .22LR. He found a decently priced Vortex 1-6x30mm scope and said he'd take it... only to come back 10 minutes later and demand an exchange because it said "Made in China" on the box, claiming "I'm not gonna fund our Enemy".
He opted for a Burris scope... which also had "Made in China" on the box, but in smaller font.

The hype for the LP1 was absolutely artifical. Wasnt a bad dot, and the few times i dealt with the company about some supply chain issues they had they were always transparent and beyond respectful to me which at the time was what made me wanna buy from them more in the future. The random little gifts they sent out with the products for the like extra 2 week wait. Kinda sad to see them get themselves involved in drama over someone not liking their optic, especially when their optic really isnt bad at all. A little overpriced due to the lower battery life conpared to some dots, the (current) lacl of NV settings, and the lack of a proper shake awake (they have that AuraWake thing now on the Gen2s)
They seem like theyre gonna be another Springfield in how theyre gonna use vague advertising aimed towards the tacticool instagram operators instead of boomers like how springfield does
The company needs to take the information, criticized product, and other data to make it better.
@@ratagris21 Couldn't agree more. Based on the current features of the Gen 2s (from what I've read, they aren't too much better than the Gen 1s, just more features) the ~500 dollar price tag it was roughly at last I checked might be a suitable price if they send you extra crumple hoods, and either improve the NV performance from 1 setting that's (in theory) usable or declare its not an NV optic and go full into adding more daylight settings.
The main reason they got involved was because Focus claimed they tried to bribe him and basically said that means they've bribed other people. THat's where the C&D came from. Hop doesn't care to mention that cause it doesn't fit his narrative of "they are going after a gun tuber for a bad review". Not true at all.
@@jonah8133 That does change things massively actually. That's a huge claim to aim at any kind of business, hopefully there's some more developments on whether it's true or not, because I'd have for another company that could have a positive market impact to end up being a bust.
Only time ive dealt with Lead and Steel, bought a stock, didnt fit all the way in the collapsed position, and had a big "made in usa" molded into the side of it. Sidebar, and a dumb, probably unnecessary and almost definitely rhetorical question: Are we to the point yet where press embargoes are almost more harmful than beneficial in the gun-o-sphere because of how negatively an audible number of people react to what is perceived as reviewer favoritism?
The response among the enthusiast community is almost universally negative now, but we're just the lunatic fringe and I bet it still drives sales.
@@Hoplopfheil I mean doing what little media stuff I did for a couple years I hated all of it, so maybe I'm just biased against how that sort of environment runs itself.
In the guitar world one youtuber (KDH) actually thinks it has a negative aspect as everyone blows their load with their video on the lapse of the embargo.
Optics only attach to one rail... I've never seen a red dot that attaches to two rails at the same time; how would it even reach? Would be a pretty bulky thing. Yes I know the comment is a joke.

I wouldn't be surprised if a company their size had two different designations on products, with one being US made, I've seen it from companies with much smaller reach. The politics behind the system are weird, and it's not infallible.
I think shotgun birdshot tests for durability are generally meant to simulate incoming artillery shrapnel.
BTW, printed circuit boards are easy to make. If you have the right equipment, cheap to make as well. Lots and lots of companies make them in small scale, probably quite a few in large scale too.
