@Grandslamer189 You're talking about modern wushu. That's a whole different thing. Traditional Long fist, which existed as far back as the 16th century, was used to fight. Back then they didn't care much for judges or competitions. Modern wushu has no use for fighting applications or proper body mechanics to deliver power. They only care about how it looks. They took the traditional Long fist forms (such as the Cha style) and modified it to make it more acrobatic. Don't confuse the two!
Not a defensive style...you just don't see the applications. Southern styles (Hung Gar,Lee Gar + Wing Chun etc) tend to be close contact because they're used in rice fields, forests and alleyways in the cities. So they rely more on short strikes. Northern styles like Long Fist,Eagle Claw + Choy Gar etc fight in wide open areas in/near mountains so they can swing their arms and legs to generate more power. They tend to kick high also because the opponent could be on higher ground or on a horse.
@liangzhang Thanks, but I haven't :) I was just commenting on the "fancy and cute" bit while talking about Wushu. I wasnt sure people would know why those moves are in the forms. I am a more traditional kung fu guy myself. In fact, I'm taking a Traditional Long Fist, and Drunken Straight Sword course starting next weekend with Yao Li, the founder of Boston Tai-Chi Kung Fu.
@liangzhang i definitly like this, i am in montreal would u please tell me where are you? because im interested in learning this u can tell me by private messageand the prices =)
@Frequent2001 Those "fancy and cute" moves are specifically put in place because the Chinese judging requires them. Much like in figure skating the performers are required to have specific elements. They are intended to show the maximum amount of strength, body control, and balance. Its their way of making the forms hard enough so that they actually have something to judge on instead of everyone just doing it perfectly.
No dude ur way off base all firebending is based soley on Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Kung Fu is generally (with the exception of older, wiser stylist due to not being able to rely on muscles) external fighting as where Xing Yi is a leading internal Chinese art like Tai Chi cuz internal fighting is more Doaist belief not Buddhist. Now Chang Quan is Long Fist is centered around.

Nice video!
i find southern fist better than long fist because it is fulled with short and powerful blows whilst long fist is mainly a defensive style.
