I must admit, I find it cringe (at this point.) It's such a massive thing to lug around. There are far better, minimalist, sleek, unique water bottle choices to choose from in the world.
Plus, way easier to steal! A thief no longer has to get ahold of your bag or purse, all they need is for you to not be paying attention to your Stanley momentarily, and now they've got your cash, credit cards, ID, phone, keys, etc.
These things should always be kept safely in your purse, fanny pack or pocket..not out in the open like that, (all for the sake of being aesthetically pleasing/properly accessorized lol)

To play devils advocate on the nails- I purchased an LED lamp about 10 years ago, I literally still use it. I purchased base and top coat I’ve had for probably
5+ years? The acetone and alcohol lasts months as well. The only thing I can admit I’ve “over consumed” is new colors, which I don’t buy anymore since I’ve changed my consumption habits. At home nails to me is like anything else, you can go overboard or you can be pretty minimal about it and use and love the products for years.

My mom works in a salon and she would always give her their half empty bottles. I guess it's too annoying to tilt the bottle to dip the brush at that level so the salon just tosses them. Some of my favorite things in the world are anything witchy or spooky, Halloween/fall, give me all of it. Like you said, permanently. So I on a personal level don't mind when stores have products out in July, but I will admit that it's ridiculous and feeds into the hyper consumerism. I will thrift halloween items and look for them online all year and then only buy a couple of new items when stores start stocking them. I also live in a very hot state, so we don't get the normal fall experience here. Halloween is one of the easiest holidays to do more sustainably, so the time of year is always bittersweet to me.

Currently they're on the lawn with swim trunks and a giant flamingo innertube. They redecorate them every month. The best part is unless one of their accessories is damaged or just doesn't survive storage, they use the same things season after season, which makes sense because finding clothing and accessories for skelletons that big can't be easy! Halloween lover here! I agree with you for the most part and I avoid buying cheap plastic Halloween crap but I do like to add a couple of high-quality spooky items to my (year round) decor if I find something that really appeals to me, and that will essentially last me for the rest of my life. The trouble is that stores put out Halloween decor in July and August. By September it’s pretty much all gone and the stores are full of Christmas. So anyone who wishes to buy anything for Halloween has no choice but to buy it in the height of the miserable hot summer. We really need to get stores to put things out during the appropriate season, but they don’t seem to want to do that anymore. :-(

    • @poisonisley
      @poisonisley หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Very good point. It's like the holiday never happened when it's only the beginning of October and the stores all have Christmas items out. It kills the fun. I don't mind as much for Halloween, since there's not a holiday right before it that the decorations would be in the way of. However, like you said, it does make people have to shop earlier when it's not even close to being fall weather.

    • @sarasynfox
      @sarasynfox หลายเดือนก่อน

Halloween orders for shops are a lot smaller because with temporary theme stores like Spirit, a lot of other stores just can't compete, so they carry a very small stock that mostly sells early to excited shoppers before the seasonal costume shops open. Having worked in a craft store during the season, a lot of people just stop buying Halloween and fall the moment Christmas hits the shelves in August. That part is somewhat consumer driven.

I think what would be a good supplemental video (possibly a short) of talking about the things you can buy if you don’t spend the money on hauls. Like for example, you could have saved up for a train trip across the United States, or taking a class you’ve been wanting to take, or invested in *insert something important to them*. I believe there’s a psychological component to these hauls, either them trying to fit in and feel a part of something or trying to find happiness in material items. People like it when they feel like they are gaining something.

Yeah. I have an anecdote. My friends asked me to go to a bar with them last week and it was bad timing, I would have had to buy buss tickets with night fees both ways, plus a minimum of one drink, I counted that's 20 euros I could donate to Gaza. 20 euros is a quite typical donation sum for me when I have some spare money. Put in that perspective spending that money just to see my friends in the middle of the night when I could see them during the day for free felt unreasonable.
I also recently learned that you can buy quite big areas of wetlands to conserve them with little money (where I live).
Learning things like this where little money goes a long way, has put some spending habits we have to perspective. Why are we so ready to spend 50€ for a bar night or shopping (basically throwing it away) but not donate 10€ to charity, or put on savings account to buy land, or something else that has meaning in the long run? You lose the money in the short term in both cases, but the other has meaning.

I realized the other day that my sewing room is filled with a ton of fabric stash that I have never considered using (mostly given fabrics) that are seasonal. I decided to start making fabric gift wrapping and seasonal sewn items (pot holders, bowl cozies etc.) that I want to switch out with the seasons. Two birds one stone: seasonal “decor” that is functional while also sewing down my stash.
Ballet flats: there are way too many out there that yes, are uncomfortable as all get out. I have two pairs of ballet flats from SAS that are my most worn shoes, they are super comfortable for my picky feet and are great 3 season shoes in OK, dressy enough for a work event while casual enough for errands.
I am with you on the crazy waterbottle trends. I too have multiple cups and bottles that are “mine” (vs my family’s) but they also each have a specific purpose and are regularly used rather than just bring collected. I did just buy a replacement tumbler but before that I hadn’t bought a bottle or cup in 6ish years (with the exception of replacement lids).

A way I like to change for the seasons is just buying or reusing natural things as decor. For instance, before Halloween, I’ll buy mini pumpkins and squash, let them decorate the home, and then at the end, compost them into my garden, plant seeds from them, or make a soup with them. Same goes for winter, spring, and summer “decor” from the store or garden (basically they’re edible things that stay for a season to liven the place up that end up being eaten, used or composted later). The holidays can be anything from baking cookies to buying a pet-friendly plant that is later given away as a gift, etc. Summer decor is usually a bowl of fresh garden vegetables I grew, and every spring I reuse Easter baskets and recyclable Easter eggs as a decoration. This brings a lot of satisfaction of staying away from trends (I don’t have any social media accounts currently), but still enjoying the seasons with something small.
And to not spend any money, easiest and a fun thing to do, is change for the seasons by swapping the bedsheets and decor to other things I already have, or moving furniture for a new look. Every few months or so, it’s always nice to have a fresh “new” looking house without a boatload of money on excess accessories.

I don’t have TikTok so I don’t know about trends on that platform. I only get a mani for special occasions and maybe four pedicures a year (mainly for sandal season) because they usually last a while and surprisingly look good. However, the last time I got a pedi for my birthday in May it seemed like the salon changed their products because my pedi looked terrible and didn’t last long. So I made a purchase at Kapa Nui Nails so I could do my own nails at home. This is a sustainable brand I saw on your blog Shelbi and I love their products! The purchase that I’ve made equates to a mani and pedi at the salon and the supplies will last at least four sandal seasons! I definitely like their products and will use them over the salon products that aren’t great quality. Something I want to anti haul this summer is the Bogg Bag and all the accessories for it. For those that might not know about it, it’s a plastic tote it’s unnecessary just to have for the beach or pool. I’ve seen sporting goods stores will a wall full of Bogg Bags and products. Especially for Halloween, the pieces would be wrapped in old newspaper, because they were all ceramics. It was so much fun to unpack them, because a lot of the times we had forgotten some of the items (and also reading the newspaper we would re-use every year was fun). A lot of the lanterns we would fix when they were broken. My mum would only get new ones, if they were unfixable. I feel like people are so obsessed with going with trends and styles that they forget that nostalgia and memory can be equally as rewarding (and that some styles don‘t go out of style)

i saw a fashion youtuber recently talk about trends by saying to think about your gut reaction when you first saw the piece - if you think something is ugly or boring at first but then it grows on you because you keep seeing it, then you're probably not going to wear it much or get bored of it quickly

With you on most of these, but I will be enjoying dreaming about fall (but not purchasing anything for it), and wearing my Clarks ballet flats to work- they’re actually so comfy!

As someone who owns a samba pair I love your video. You going off on trendy things that are unnecessary is very funny and it really helps me ground myself to not participate in overconsumerism. 🙏🏼

as a person who has owned sambas (2nd hand) for over 5 years & is known to wear flats and flats only in the summer, it was so funny to find out they're both trending right now, guess it's my time to shine lol

Hi Shelbie, i’ve know about your videos for a while and i occasionally watch them whenever i need help on my sustainable journey, i would like to see you talk more about how you approach unsustainable situations that are out of your control. For exemple: trips to the emergency room, renovations that require new materials, car repairs, caring for a pet (food, vet…) and anything else you think may be hard to swap for a sustainable option but is actually doable! Ps, thank you for not supporting trending stupidity! I don’t have tik tok nor will i ever download it, but seeing these “over consumption” videos being “the norm” on every social platform is exhausting, and seeing a very small percentage of people being against it and finding it stupid is also frustrating, so thank you for sharing and bringing awareness to over consumption and how unnecessary it is💗

On the nail things, you can make it a group/community activity as well! Make a group chat or something with your friends, or neighbours, and meet up to do your nails, share colours and equipment and have a chat and good time :)
Though as a teenager, that’d work for me, not sure if that’s very doable for many adults lol

I completely understand and agree with the permanent jewelry for most people but i have a permanent anklet that I absolutely love because I'm a person who wears little to no jewelry so it's perfect for me to not have to think about it but still like having it there and not losing it when i put it away to forget i own it. 😅 (I've had mine for years)

Can we anti-haul the concept of the “holy grail” product?! I feel like it’s so easy to get pulled into needing the “perfect” version of something when A version will do (and ofc the perfect version probably doesn’t exist). I find myself weakest to influence when it’s something I do need but I’m looking for a functional version or a replacement and get sucked into looking for the “perfect” version. Also because by the time I need to replace something 9 times out of 10 it’s no longer being made so, also let’s anti-haul re-designing everything once a year.

Love my undies! Bought 3 of them 😅
Also, I’m guilty for buying a Stanley accessory. It’s the Velcro pack. In my defense, I use it for chapstick and hand sanitizer. It’s a good reminder that I need to use those things. Easy access. Goes everywhere with me. Fits my AirPods too so I don’t forget them while working out. But I definitely won’t be buying the charms and other nicknacks for it. That’s overkill. I hate digging in my backpack for those things so I thought it’d be helpful and it has.
I use my Stanley DAILY. It was gifted to me last Christmas and it has improved the amount of water I drink.

I love this video! I will say, I love my permanent jewelry! I’ve had some of mine for over 2 years. It feels more sustainable for me than actually buying random bracelets that go in and out of trends. My two permanent bracelets are my personal style and go with everything I wear. But I feel like I was way ahead of the trend when I got mine! I almost treated getting mine like I was getting a tattoo because I knew I would have them on for a while.

I live in the UK, so we're not as into Hallowe'en as the USA is, but I've used my same decorations for 5+ years: two little witch's hats on wooden stalks that I put in the planter by my door, and one Hallowe'en tinsel rope that I tie to the knocker. (The witch's hats go back in my pot plants after Hallowe'en! I keep them out all year round, I just like them.)
As for nails, let's be real. All you NEED to do them nicely at home is a base, a colour and a top coat. Everything else is superfluous (I do have a wipe clean mat because I'm clumsy)

Liked and subscribed when you started talking about ballet flats - THE PAIN! Pretty sure my years of wearing those shoes gave me plantar fasciitis 10 years later. I also did not know sambas were trending, I used them as a kid for my indoor soccer league, and bought an adult size about 5-8 years ago.

This entire video is on point. I do my nails at home, always have and I rarely buy new polish. I just use my stash, I have a bottle from Claire’s that’s at least 15 years old and still works great. Fall starts in September. It’s crazy how much I’m already seeing pumpkins, let me enjoy my pool season. The permanent jewelry is something new I hadn’t heard of, and it sounds like the dumbest thing ever, I like swapping out my jewelry and I think most other people do too 😂

Something that's been on my mind lately has been home gyms. Of course this picked up a ton during covid, but now in the fitness world, and especially with fitness influencers, it feels like the new gold standard is to have your own home gym. But there are levels to this. A few years ago, if you had asked me what a home gym should consist of, I would have said a yoga mat, some dumbells/kettlebells, maybe a bench and maybe a piece of secondhand cardio equipment. But now there are influencers with in-home saunas, ice baths, and very expensive machines like pelotons in their homes. Not to mention that a lot of companies now offer a health and wellness stipend for employees that can be used towards things like workout equipment. It's hard because I see both sides of it. In my town, our only budget gym is always packed. It's stressful to go in there. A lot of folks see their workouts as 'me time' and it's very personalized from the lighting to the music etc. But on a grander scale, I do worry about the consumerism of this. If everyone on your block had their own home gym...that's wasteful. I don't know the solution to this, I have a few ideas but this is already such a long comment!
