Instant subbed. 3 minutes deep and I’m already learning details on stance and hand+elbow placement aligbement. Ty so much. Can’t wait to see other videos on your channel once I get home from Jiu Jitsu class tonight .
Check out my NCAA analyses some time if you want to see super high level wrestling. Especially since I don’t know how long it will be up, since the pricks from Big Ten flagged it. Funny, because I am literally advertising wrestling and their channel for them for free
Main Takeaways: 1. Post at the elbows not the wrists 2. Laces pointing down to the floor when sprawling 3. Chase the hip line not the shoulder line 4. Head on the same side as the underhook 5. Don't stand up without inside position or hand control 6. Dont shoot from straight on without a setup 7. Don't reach forward with the same arm and leg (if left foot is forward reach with right arm)
Pretty good! Chasing at or below the hip line. Coming up to the waist off a shot or in a scrambling situation is not going to give you good control. Wrap up the legs any time you can. This was one of the biggest takeaways I got from collegiate wrestling. People will fight 100% through every position, so you don’t want to give them any opportunities to scramble, which happens through their legs. Wrap up their legs and they can’t scramble anymore.
Love your videos man. I learn a lot from them. Regarding the underhook with head on far side knee tap. Is it wrong? You get more reach with the non underhooking arm to grab the knee
You lose head position, so he can keep you at a distance and you’ll never get to the legs…and he can actually uchi mata the crap out of you. The underhook is weak when you pull your head out. The purpose of an underhook when going to the far knee is to bend his torso towards the far knee thereby making his far leg plant. If your underhook is that shallow, it won’t work. If you start with your head on the same side first, then you will have lift on his arm and get that nice torso bend. Watch video #6 and you will see that even when I go to that knee tap on the far side, I don’t pull my head way out of there. The system I learned from Andy Seras is designed to work even when you are exhausted and slippery. Nicky is very powerful and if he had used the underhook properly to circle Jay back to the inside, then he would have gotten that takedown in the center of that mat. He was fresh and strong then. As the match went on though, the ability for him to do that went downhill. You need a system that works when you are exhausted, slippery, and need to score
I’ve watched a lot of them. The toughest thing about those is it seems like nobody gives him proper resistance. They don’t sprawl. It’s also why I haven’t been able to do anything with Wiltse. This partners just fall. Now Craig Jones vs Nicky Rod in wrestling would be legit. If that exists, could you link it here?
I don’t yet. This is something I am going to cover in my instructional. It’s not really a great position if you stay there. I will just stalemate someone there
Interesting what you are saying about Nicky getting tired, that seemed to happen to him at ADCC as well as Nicky's #1 fan I wonder if that's just a lack of competition often as he is so dominant in the room, he just looks a bit off when. The lights come one, even if they are in house lights
I think it’s like I said in the video. He is inefficient with his stance, so he has to use muscle to defend his position. While it takes energy to stay in a good stance, it takes WAY more energy to move your entire body back into it when you were out of position. Jay stays in good position and pressures forward. When Ryan comes out of his stance and Jay forced the action, Nicky had to do a lot more correction just to defend. In regards to the competition, that can also have a massive impact. In ADCC, Nicky was very amped up. That guy wasn’t engaging. So you have to use what I taught on how to deal with an opponent who is stalling (video 14). Otherwise you are chasing him all over the mat trying to snap him down, which doesn’t work when he isn’t pushing (Video 13). If he wrestles a lot with Jay and Nicky Rod, he will get A LOT better. He has huge potential
I watched that last night. A lot there actually. If Gordon trains like this often, then I believe he will only get better on his feet. Meregali is a tough tough dude and that makes for an awesome training partner. He doesn’t concede anything, unlike so many people do.
Thanks for this one. That stutter step before the shot and head positioning from the underhook is something I need to work on. The tone of your voice on these breakdown vids on young BJJ guy’s wrestling is the same I hear on a coach/teacher talking about a student that is leaving potential on the table, haha.
Awesome video man, thanks. What do you think of Izaak Michell’s wrestling? Any chance of a breakdown? Seemed like he had some of the best wrestling at Bteam before he left.
Do you have a good link? I have watched some of his stand up and remember thinking he didn’t have much competition…that always complicates things. It happens with Wiltse. People want me to dona breakdown on him, but people just fall down and there’s not much to say. But I do remember Izaak’s match in ADCC and it was very entertaining. My recollection was a lot of waist chasing, and that is what kept that scramble going. That is precisely why I teach people to wrap up legs. It shuts down the scrambles. I need to watch that ADCC match again. Send me something if you like it
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 man there was a plethora of videos on TH-cam but I guess Bteam deleted all of them once he got kicked out or left the team. Yes, I have seen that Nolf was there at one point. I think Nicky’s wrestling has improved some. I would expect it to for someone who trains full time. His ability to get that underhook off of the shot is nice. I made pointed that out several times. It will help him more when he gets his head in there and uses classic positioning. He will be able to do a lot more offense off it immediately and not lose the position or use too much muscle to make it work. Once he gets disciplined about keeping his hands out front, he will be able to stuff shots from more of a distance and then work the short offense off of it. Here, he had to do a ton of hard work, because Jay got in deep on many of those shots. I think if he sticks with it, and stays healthy (with the knee injuries) then he will continue to improve. Most of what he needs to improve on can be adjusted quite easily.

My advice would be that if you want to stand up, then learn how to do it from a scholastic wrestler
If you make the mistake of reaching with the lead hand and the guy elbow posts and shoots a double, is your rear hand useless as a downblock or can it still be effective (assuming your rear hand was down the whole time)?
The major issue is how posting at the elbow transfers his weight to his back leg and it takes you out of your stance. Then your hand defense is weak as your weight is going backwards
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 There is a video from dps breakdown i think the name is sadulaev throw by or something like that. Thank you for your responses.
That’s not exactly what I meant. When people defend using the head on the opposite side of the underhook on my breakdown videos, I was saying that is a legitimate position when using the Iranian underhook-but nobody in the breakdowns I have done is doing that. And, by those who are commented saying they are doing the Iranian, it was clear to me they were confused. I was addressing those people directly. The Iranian underhook is a very specific position. It works well in the international wrestling rule sets (greco and freestyle). In those rulesets, the step out rule incentivizes people to push back. This is what makes the Iranian work well. Nobody I have reviewed is doing it. The context in which I said this matters. I have never seen anyone in Jiu Jitsu use the Iranian. The rules don’t really play into its strengths. Pulling your head away from the underhook isn’t the Iranian. That is a specific position with nuances that make it different than the over-under position where your head is on the other side. I would never say nobody knows how to do that, as I can’t possibly know what everyone knows. It’s based off what I have seen used in the breakdown videos and from comments of people arguing that they are in fact using the Iranian-which they are certainly not
Here is a suggestion for possible breakdown FS Match: th-cam.com/video/YiUAgKcvIPs/w-d-xo.htmlh16m33s The red singlet is one of our teammates, he’s licensed to wrestle for 2 clubs in different leagues
Yes, nice classic technique. Good use of the collar tie to push to the edge and snap down. Fireman’s when the opponent had incorrect head position. Good overall stance. Nice mechanics
Show me a clip of what you are talking about. Andy Seras was my collegiate coach and head coach of the Greco World and Greco Olympic teams. He never ever showed the underhook on the far side. You don’t get any lift and you’ll end up in the over-under position, which is 50/50 i.e. no advantage
@@silahim79 can you give me an approximate time stamp that you would like to see? I see a lot of variations of the over-under and Iranian underhook, but within the first 15mins, I see him using a lot of what I have shown on my channel-with regards to his head on the same side. Like I said here in video #46, the Iranian underhook position is a very specific thing that you can use to push people to the out of bounds and force him to respond. He must respond or you get a push out. I saw him push with the shallow underhook and controlling the far arm/hand to push him to the edge. In some cases, he digs the underhook with his head now on the same side and shows the front headlock, dropping down to the single, and running him over the far knee tap-exactly what I showed. And when I saw him do those things, it was from the head on the same side. Greco is special. You don’t have to worry about the fireman’s carry. If you push someone with a shallow underhook with your head on the opposite side-and you don’t have excellent control over that arm/hand, he can fireman’s carry you into another dimension. Exactly what I showed on video #6. Dom hit a beautiful fireman’s on me when I pushed with my head on the other side. It isn’t that having your head on the opposite side doesn’t work, it’s that what Nicky is trying to accomplish is wrong with your head over there. The head should be on the same side for the sequences that involve the vast majority of the offense people use in BJJ and scholastic wrestling. This Iranian game is very specific to international wrestling. Refs in scholastic wrestling will actually hit you for stalling if you keep pushing them to the out of bounds with this position, as there is no push out and it’s not letting action happen.
This is the same classic way I was taught for scholastic wrestling. Translates beautifully to Jiu Jitsu, because the action on the mat in terms of scambles top and bottom positions (not guard, that’s different) translates best th-cam.com/video/1bb16f4Xa9A/w-d-xo.html
Around 8.40 he is pushing with his right underhook and his head is on the other side. But I understand what you are saying that he cannot be thrown with firemans and also he has the push out option.
Great video! Do you think you could do a breakdown on Owen liveseys wrestling? He seems to always get a fireman's carry on everyone he goes against taking down people like Luke Griffith and kaynan duarte.
I just saw a short of him vs Griffith and it was because Griffith did an underhook and lost head position. Almost exactly what I showed on video #6 and what I talk about a lot in both Ryan analyses I will look into it and see how much is there. Thanks for the suggestion
Another B Team video that might be interesting for you to break down is some MMA wall wrestling that Craig Jones and Kody Steele did recently. th-cam.com/video/qoC9dGuLwbE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video. I like the idea and although I feel like I understand it, particularly how Khabib uses Greco on the cage, I would probably be out of my lane and I don’t like doing that. I actually hate when other people do that, so I don’t want to be that guy. My wrestling was always without a wall…unless we were fighting dirty, which happened from time to time in college, lol I will consider it though, because it is rather interesting and helps to reiterate a lot of what I have already taught. Thank you for the suggestion. I can always state that this isn’t my area of expertise
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 That's what I (and many others) like about you. I appreciate the straight forward nature of your reviews and your self assessment of your own knowledge. That being said, I hope you mess around with some wall wrestling because it's a lot of fun!
Thank you. Yes, it is important that people don’t shoot their mouths off…it only leads to criticism I sometimes coach at the MMA class at the University, but that’s a wide open room. The only true wall wrestling I did was when a college freshman came in all cocky and those of us with a year or more worth put them in their place, LMAO!
Rulesets and arenas matter. Good for them-they have a cage to push up against and have good control. In BJJ, where under many circumstances there is no cage, and no real threat of scoring from a push out (or stalling). So they will just go out of bounds and you will waste energy. I haven’t made any videos on the cage yet. That’s an entirely different set of things to consider

Regarding the underhook with head on far side knee tap. Is it wrong? You get more reach with the non underhooking arm to grab the knee
If that’s wrong then there’s plenty of Iranian champions who are successfully doing it wrong 😛
Oh snap I guess he addressed that pretty well
You lose head position, so he can keep you at a distance and you’ll never get to the legs…and he can actually uchi mata the crap out of you. The underhook is weak when you pull your head out. Interesting request!! Do you have any videos you would like for me to watch in particular?
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 There is a video from dps breakdown i think the name is sadulaev throw by or something like that. Thank you for your responses.
@@Jazzbeatt cool! I will check that out!
“none of you know how to use the Iranian under hook.” Pretty bold statement
It’s based off what I have seen used in the breakdown videos and from comments of people arguing that they are in fact using the Iranian-which they are certainly not
I would like to see more breakdown videos.
Any person or rolls in particular?
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 any of Gordon Ryan & Nick Rod matches, btw really good video
Here is a suggestion for possible breakdown FS Match: th-cam.com/video/YiUAgKcvIPs/w-d-xo.htmlh16m33s
The red singlet is one of our teammates, he’s licensed to wrestle for 2 clubs in different leagues
There’s a lot of matches. Which one? I browsed it and saw some freestyle and some greco
01:16:33, i thought it directs directly to the time
Yes, nice classic technique. Good use of the collar tie to push to the edge and snap down. Fireman’s when the opponent had incorrect head position. Good overall stance. Nice mechanics
@@josephbreza-grappling9459 thanks, have you ever considered to brakedown any FS or a Greco match for a yt video?
Cheers
I could do this one if you would like. I am shying away from the big ones, since the networks will cite you for copyright infringement
What about the greco underhook. Don't they have their head on the other side of the underhook?

Translates beautifully to Jiu Jitsu, because the action on the mat in terms of scambles top and bottom positions (not guard, that’s different) translates best

Almost exactly what I showed on video #6 and what I talk about a lot in both Ryan analyses
I will look into it and see how much is there.
My wrestling was always without a wall…unless we were fighting dirty, which happened from time to time in college, lol
I will consider it though, because it is rather interesting and helps to reiterate a lot of what I have already taught.
Thank you. Yes, it is important that people don’t shoot their mouths off…it only leads to criticism
I sometimes coach at the MMA class at the University, but that’s a wide open room. The only true wall wrestling I did was when a college freshman came in all cocky and those of us with a year or more worth put them in their place, LMAO!
I see the "Iranian" underhook a lot in mma to push people to the cage. Then they battle for head position
That’s an entirely different set of things to consider
had to watch after lesioning to simple man podcast, love the vid m8 grate work
Thank you! I’m glad you are here. I am trying to build a community where we can feel free to discuss wrestling/grappling techniques that are free from the hero complexes that exist in martial arts. People should be free to ask questions to increase their learning capacity
Please make a video on how to defeat dagestani wrestlers in mma
With equivalent wrestling expertise, lol! They train since they are young boys. We don’t have that kind of following here yet
