    Gents, I am Bobby Blitz, singer in Overkill....I enjoyed the critique. ..and admit you were close with the lyrical metaphor interpretation. The story is simple then turned into poetry. I was set afire in a club in Brooklyn, by a jealous ex of a new girlfriend...hair spray can and a Zippo. No damage done, this is the hypothetical revenge scenario...even mentioning his and friends initials in the lyrics, you get a 9 out of 10 for coming close.....rock on vegas!

      If you're really Bobby Blitz I want to know why Overkill never plays/played San Diego. I've been actively looking since about '90.
      Overkill is the last band on my bucket list! The one and only chance I've had to see Overkill was with Megadeth in '08 '09 ...and they never got to play. (I, by default, blame Mustain)
      Oh, and tell DD he has the best bass tone in all of metal. Also, sorry to hear about your spasication on stage a few years ago.

    Overkill was always at the top for me, as was Testament, and it was always a shame that they never got the recognition that the Big Four got. Overkill was also always a great mix of serious subject matter along with songs that were just fun.

    • @Gregbaltzer
      @Gregbaltzer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It is a shame, but I've always understood why. First off they kicked out their key song writer after the 4th album. I love Horrorscope, but their first 4 are their best. Also Bobby's vocals are hard for a lot of metal fans to take. It took me a while to get used to them, and I know plenty of metal fans who don't like Bobby's vocals.

      @@Gregbaltzer I grew up in NJ when Overkill was just coming up, so they were always a favorite, but you're dead on. Kicking out Bobby Gustafson after Years of Decay was a mistake that's still apparent today and Blitz's voice is totally an acquired taste. That said, even on their most recent albums there are some absolute destroyers and they never disappoint live.

    • @WaltBTB
      @WaltBTB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I can certainly agree with Bobby's vocals being hit or miss with new listeners. Exodus is the same way. I also grew up in NJ and saw them play a lot of shows with hardcore punk bands and it always made sense to me. Overkill had that punk vibe to them, they just happened to play thrash.

    The Big 5 comment made me happy, I've been saying this for years... Chronologically speaking this is one of the oldest thrash bands... Plus they're unbelievably active, nearly 20 albums and at least to me they're all great... Never ever been on hiatus, great live band and new albums every 2 or 3 years... It's quantity with quality, honestly there are few bands that are this consistent and reliable... Definitely revisit Overkill, especially because their albums have improved sound production from the 90s and forward, but with the same old-school thrash shreddiness...

      I have a love hate relationship with Horrorscope. It was my favorite Overkill album, but I hate it now because I was listening to that album when I found out my cousin died. I was listening to Nice Day For A Funeral when I got the news. Ever since then, the album has always drugged up these emotions from that day, so I hate listening to that album. A friend of mine told me that the only way you can break that negative emotional connection with music is to simply make yourself listen to it a lot. But I still can't make myself do it.

    @SamFerguson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    Great choice! I think most thrash fans have their own personal "Big Four", and they will slot another band into that fourth slot after Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, rather than Anthrax. That's no slam on Anthrax. They're incredible, they're legends, and they deserve that recognition. But I think a lot of fans would say that the "Big Four" should be Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer...and then Anthrax, or Testament, or Exodus, or Overkill, etc. Or like you said, most of us would just prefer a "Big Five" or "Big Six" :)
    Regarding production, I absolutely agree. When I got into thrash, it was via exposure to Metallica's three titanic mid-80s albums ('Ride the Lightning', 'Master of Puppets', and '...And Justice for All'). And for all of those albums, they had huge label support and were given the time and money they needed to bring a level of production to those albums that you weren't seeing on most other thrash releases of the 1980s. With the exception of a few bands that really had commercial success (and I don't say that like it's a dirty word; success can be a great thing for a band, giving them - for example - access to better producers, facilities, etc.), thrash shared the DIY attitude of the punk bands that influenced it. So a lot of the second- and third-tier thrash bands (in terms of exposure, not talent) were on smaller labels, were self-producing albums, were working "day jobs" at the same time they were trying to tour and record, etc.
    For Overkill especially, I love their older stuff for its rawness and intensity, but I honestly prefer some of their material that they recorded starting with 1993's 'I Hear Black'. From that album onward, they were able to have much better production quality on their releases. Not every one of post-1990 albums from them was an instant classic, but all of my favorite songs from them ("Dreaming In Columbian", "Long Time Dyin'", "Stone Cold Jesus", etc.) are from that era.
    The same can be said for one of my other favorite thrash bands, Exodus. I mean absolutely no disrespect to their original vocalist, Paul Baloff (who was basically the walking embodiment of the thrash ethos), but my favorite albums of theirs are the ones they recorded in the early-to-mid 2000s with vocalist Rob Dukes. They're heavier, meaner, and the production quality is great. George, I know you're a drum guy - you guys should check out Exodus' "Funeral Hymn", for Tom Hunting's drumming if nothing else.
    Thanks for doing these! It's always a highlight of my day when I get a Patreon notice that you've uploaded a new video.

      Too true about everyone having their own "Big Four" - for my part, it's Sepultura, Voivod, Coroner, and Celtic Frost. I didn't have the budget back in the 80s to get exposed to all the thrash bands before my tastes turned to death and black metal, and Overkill was on of those thrash bands I never got to hear, but if all their songs were like this, they might well have bumped one of the other bands off my top-4 - great stuff!

    The "Big Four" was determined by album sales. It's not a matter of opinion. Overkill didn't sell as many albums, so they didn't make the cut. It's that simple. It doesn't mean that Overkill's music is inferior to that of the "Big Four."

    You guys definitely have this song nailed, the entire "Feel The Fire" album is phenomenal, and I would argue is tied with "The Years Of Decay" for the best album Overkill ever put out. I definitely feel you on the production as well, the album was recorded and released in 1985, but the production has much more of a 1982 quality to it, largely because thrash metal was a California based phenomenon in the early days and Anthrax and Overkill, who were in the New York area, didn't really break out until the mid-1980s despite being in existence for as long as Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Slayer and several prominent others, hence they didn't have access to the same cutting edge recording studio tech that Metallica and Megadeth did.
    From a production standpoint, I would definitely recommend checking out something from either "The Years Of Decay" or "Under The Influence", particularly songs like Elimination, Evil Never Dies, Hello From the Gutter and Head First. And yes, your sentiment that Overkill should have been part of the Big Four is shared by many in the metal community, I would actually argue that Overkill has an edge over Anthrax, at least in terms of total musical output.

    I absolutely love how you guys truly understand and appreciate metal and all the more how you guys focus on the love of thrash. You guys are exactly right about everything you "feel" in terms how how Thrash makes you feel! You are spot on about the speed, the sound of the crunch of the guitar, the pace of the drums. I was born in 1970, I was 15 when I got into Metal. My order of bands that I got into was Motley Crue, Dio, Iron Maiden, and OZZY but THEN THRASH came.... And everything changed. Metallica, Slayer, Meade the, Exodus, Testament and Overkill. And of course the many many more after that. But to me, even as an Anthrax fan, their really is a Big 5.... And the 5 above, Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Overkill and then Megadeth are it. With Exodus and then Anthrax next. Now, with that said, those are not my top 5 bands as I love, and I mean love many many other bands from Kreator, to Death, to Death Angel, to Fear Factory to Slipknot and so many many many others. But in my opinion Thrash is the best genre of Metal music.... The perfect mix of speed, a metal voice, technicality and brutality.... It is the best!!!
