      Andy & Alex I first heard this song about 1980 round at a friends house... his folks had (looking back now) the greatest record collection ever! Boston, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, The Doors, The Rolling Stones and so many more! It is without doubt a timeless song and one that is a go too for me when I hit a bipolar episode.! Great stuff lads. Hope you’re both well 👍🏻💚

      That is so true!!!! Delp's voice is awesome!!! I'm 54 & I was lucky - grew up with Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Joe Cocker and Soul. I got in to RUSH at 12, Metallica, Anthrax, Motorhead and MegaDeath at 13!!! Da La Soul & 2 Live Crew, blew my little mind!!! I kinda hate pop music, some of it is good.... but mostly it's whatever.... I must say that Hozier's track "Too Sweet" is outstanding!!! That song is a classic!!!

      I still say this about music from Boston. While some bands and songs sound dated and have lost their appeal, Boston songs still sound fresh as the day they were first released. Not sure why they sound so fresh, but guessing that part of it is in the mixing and part is in the outstanding vocal talents.

    A note about this song, and the whole album, regarding how "flawless" it sounds. 1) It is flawless. 2) This album was a demo done by Tom Schloz in the basement of his apartment complex. The record company wanted him to re-record it and he refused and went with the demo. Keep in mind, this was in the 70's decades before the digital tools of today. This was all analog tape. A truly classic and perfect song..

    • @dobrofool
      @dobrofool 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Aannndddd... He very successfully marketed that processor as the Rockman, a very successful product line unto today, eventually sold off to Dunlop. In the beginning sales helped keep their heads above water during the long drawn out court battle with their record label from Sholtz’s slow turn around for a second album due to his annal perfectionism... which also drove Brad and the gang nuts! There’s so much to the Boston story...

The feelings that listening to the great songs that were in those years brought me freed me from depression, I became a Heavy Metal maniac and started playing the bass. I instantly became obsessed with the voice of my idols such as Rob Halford from Judas Priest or the energetic way of playing of Steve Harris from Iron Maiden!!

      @@AussieBill128 I’ve noticed that songs that got overplayed back in the day, and we all got tired of them, somehow they can come back to us decades later and it somehow just works again. I’ve had a resurgence of Journey lately. I got so tired of Journey, but now, I find I can really appreciate Steve Perry’s voice so much more than I used to.

    As someone who loves rock with musicality this track is spot on for me. It ebbs and flows, rises and falls, rages and calms like the ocean at a beach. It has great melodic touches and the vocal and backing blend is one of the best examples of that art I know of. There are few rock tracks which "don't let up" that I really like, but this one is THE outstanding example of classy rock - though of course a lot of people emulated the style after this became a hit.

    All the more remarkable in that there really was no band. Tom Scholz did this in his spare time while working at Polaroid, played and recorded all the guitar, keyboard and bass tracks himself, and invented a lot of the equipment to produce the unique Boston guitar sounds. He brought in others do do the vocals and drums and then mixed this song, and most of the rest of the album, himself in his basement. None of these songs were ever played live in their entirety by a real band until after this album was made.. The guy is a genius.

    The 'production' was done by one man - Tom Scholz - in his basement. He played all parts but drums and vocals - which were added after he laid the main tracks with beats. This is a masterpiece of art that can't be compared to other groups at the time because of one man's vision and his genius - he also designed the studio and invented tech to make this sonic sound. Glad to see younger audiences appreciate Boston, just thought I would add some additional perspective to your analysis.

      Hey Jim you've got that 100% wrong. The debut album was not the result of one man's vision and genius. It was the sum of three . Tom and i wrote that music together in my basement in Jamaica plain starting in 1969. As the tunes began to come together I would bring my drums to Toms home in Watertown.Tom had built a 4 track recording set up where we would track the drum beds for each of the songs.No one but Tom and I were ever in the studio. I would play the track by myself. Tom would play along with me only as a unrecorded scratch track to help me know where I was in the song arrangement. Over the years I became very good at ignoring his performance because he would always screw up but i could still use it as a road map for where I was in the song.My contribution to this masterpiece is the percussive foundation that supports the melodic structure above. Over many years Tom relied on my percussive foundation to inspire him as he searched for the chord changes on the debut songs.When we started to work in my basement Tom's Instrument was keyboard. This is why the first Boston music ever recorded was Foreplay in my Basement in JP. He had just bought a guitar when we first started working in my basement and over the next few years taught him self to play as we wrote the tunes together.The first demo we ever did was at Natural Sound in Maynard ma. in the spring of 1970. The demo was turned down by all the labels but they all wanted to buy one song San Francisco day which later became Hitch a Ride. We displayed the talent we possessed at this early date but it would take over six years of hard work before we achieved success. Brad is the third contributor to this masterpiece. He did not join the band until spring of 1972. After he joined he re-sang all the vocals on the demos that had been done by other singers. A year later after getting married Brad quit the band at his wife's request. Tom and I continued with another singer until spring of 1974 when i told Tom i could not play in mothers milk any more because i was going broke. We only did about three gigs a month because we could not take regular club gigs because Tom worked a full time job at Polaroid. A friend of mine had called and ask me to play in his band because his drummer had just quit two weeks before they would start six months of booked club gigs on Cape Cod.I told Tom I would still work on the demo recordings just not the few cover gigs we had been doing. Over the next year Tom and I did all the drum beds then Tom would perform the rest of the instruments for the final demo. After the music was complete Brad would come to the studio and track all the vocals. There were no drum machines to make beats.if there were the first album would sound just like the last album. The sum of one person can never compare to the the sum of three.

      @@jamesmasdea947 Well I certainly stand corrected! The information about the band on TH-cam often suggests this idea, so maybe someone should make a documentary that represents the facts as you present them here.
