I am an actor and content creator with Hollywood credits including roles on Lucifer (Netflix), Starlight Christmas (Hallmark), JT Leroy (Universal Studios), etc. In this channel, I offer insight to Kpop performances using my 10+ years of training in dance, acting, singing and overall performance. In dance, my forte are contemporary and musicals and have done most of my performances in theatre. Although my channel is mostly known for dance analysis, I am currently inactive in the dance community.
This was their first like a breakout-ish song, it got insanely huge that North Koreans would use it too. They debuted 2012 and this was 2013

This was a one-take shot so when Kai dropped his hat, he had to improvise to make it look intentional and natural so they don't have to re-shoot the whole thing lol Also, anyone remember the ghost? Where yall EXO-Ls since the beginning? Lmao

Srsly this is one of the most iconic songs in kpop and literally every idol knows this song. It paved the way for kpop and helped SM buy its building. So many kpop idols and groups have covered this song. So glad that you reacted to this😊

FYI :
EXO is the first group that bring the concept of school by wearing uniform costumes. After "growl" was released, many other groups have started using this concept. This concept has become a concept that is often used in the kpop industry. Ex : bts - boy in luv, seventeen - mansae, and many more

But I think I've read that EXO was the first group, and at that time EXO looked unique in Korea because they used uniforms when performing. When talking about uniform costumes, the knetz immediately remembered EXO

@@icyy_hot444 basically, SM wasn't and still doesn't really treat their Chinese (and other foreign members) idols/trainees correctly.
Luhan, along with Kris and Tao, were not treated the same as the other members of exo.
The golden times when exo was still twelve, I miss that. Kris, luhan and tao are successful soloists in china right now.
when EXO first debuted with Mama they were seen as SM’s flops and a failure. Growl is what truly made them so popular and the nation’s pick. there is no korean that doesn’t know this song. Key from shinee even said this comeback alone built a whole building for sm ent

you should see any growl performance live, there are so many versions, one better than the other. they even presented it at the winter olympics along with power ... I highly recommend that you watch that presentation.
Actually, Kai was a guest in a show where he gave some tips to the trainees who were performing this song, and he explained how he does this step where they are suspended 10:13 . I remember Kai showing them How to place the weight on the sides of their feet. While it looks awkward, they could do the move. And then, being the great guy he is, Kai stayed longer and went through the entire choreo to make sure they would do it well.

I was so surprised that you hadn't seen this yet ngl, it's my comfort song I love it so much! you're probably heard it because it's HUGE in Korea even now, I don't think there's a single active idol rn who can't dance at least the chorus of this song
9:52 Kai actually taught this move to trainees performing Growl in a survival show called "Under Nineteen". You can check out how Kai taught how to do this move easily.
I think watching "Produce 101" has sparked your interest. 😅 Growl is their third or fourth comeback and their debut song is "Mama", the guy that you mentioned in the middle, with the pink hair is Luhan. To be honest reacting to new stuff is always good, but having reactors explore older kpop is gold! In the end, kpop didn't start with 3rd or 4th generation idols and it's quite interesting when people check out songs that practically transformed kpop as a genre!

In Korea, this song is known as the "Unofficial National Anthem", even they say it themselves: if you don't know Growl, you're not Korean. Actually, MAMA was EXO's debut song, Growl was the song that brought them to world fame, the song that positioned them as one of the more unforgettable boyband kpop. This song gave so much profit at that time to the SM company, that thanks to Growl it was possible to build the current SM Entertainment building. Crazy, right?

Kai showed the “suspension” move you’ve been talking about on some show in 2019. He did a class for a few trainees with Growl and showed it in detail. It literally is defying gravity haha
When Exo first debuted, there were 12 members and 3 members left. Now it’s only 9 members.

When they do Growl live for concerts etc they seem it change it up - they made it into a dance battle for ElyXiOn concerts and did a different version still for the Olympics (which if you haven't seen would highly recommend). The other MV similar to this where you can fully see the dance is Call Me Baby.
That pink/silver(in the dance practice) haired guy, my friend, is Luhan, the reason I'm an EXO-L. EXO used to promote in sub units, EXO-K for korean audience, and EXO-M for chinese. Kai is the center of K and Luhan is center of M. While lulu is a centre, he is also a main vocal of EXO-M alongside with Chen. Luhan and Kai were the most popular members of EXO back then. When Luhan left, many of his fans left the fandom and that's roughly about 3-4 million people, they say. He, also Kris and Tao are still doing their activities in China as soloists. You can watch more of Luhan coz he's also a great dancer : (

So the other guy not bending lower at the side was Kris. So him practically like 6ft+ it would be difficult to reach the t’ curve that others can do. so it was one of the reasons. Chanyeol and kris both are more than 6ft so they have a hard time doing flexible stuff.
I miss the Chinese members but they left for pretty good reason. They didn’t promote EXO-M or them individually half as well. Luhan was one of the most popular even in Korea but they left him on the backburner. All of them were sick and tired of it (literally sick/injured too)
Tao (3rd to leave) was so beat up and sick by the time her left it was a bit heartbreaking. He had apparently suffered r*cist b*llying as a trainee too.
