This beaver is being raised by wildlife rehabbers after being orphaned as a newborn. Her parents were killed and their dam and lodge destroyed. Beavers are classified as nuisance animals in many US states and can be killed anytime. Beavers need to spend 2 years with their human rehabbers. They need to have lots of opportunities to practice instinctive behaviors. This beaver enjoys playing this game inside the house but lives with the other orphaned beavers outside most of the time. We hope you fall in love ! This misunderstood and unique species needs lots of it!

You can take a beaver from the river, but you can't take the river out of the beaver. That is some impressive workmanship.
I need to be like this beaver. You know they picked all of this stuff up later when he was done. And he'll wake up the next day, see the dam gone, and be like "alright time to build another one" without even flinching or getting mad. Pure grind-set. Doesn't get paid for it, no one's forcing him to do it, will be sheltered and provided for regardless of whether he builds or not. But it's written into his DNA that he's gotta build, and nothing's going to stop him from it. I need that mentality when I go into work.

It's not all just instinct. Young beavers get better at building dams overtime by observing how their parents do it. Maybe they really are intelligent 😏

Definitely right that beavers are highly intelligent. The writings of Grey Owl (Archibald Stansfeld Belaney (1888-1938) particularly his ‘Pilgrims of the Wild’ give a close up of Beavers that had never before been heard of. Grey Owl had gone from trapper to conservationist at a time when the beavers had nearly been wiped out due to overhunting. His stories are insightful and humorous. This beaver never saw other beavers build dams, it did not learn from them by observation and repetition, he didn't go to beaver school and get its little beaver degree in building dams. It just knows where and how to pile up objects to form a barrier to stop the (real or perceived) flow of water, it's genetically encoded up to the point the beaver will start doing something as complex as building a structure meant to stop the water flow on its own without anyone having taught it how to.
