I’ve been commuting to work 9 miles each way in a hilly area for 3 years now, and I love it!
Great tips, I agree with all of it.
I take a washcloth in a ziplock bag to work, so that everything stays dry in my backpack. I dry myself off only under my arms and around the bum and air dry the rest, that cools
Panniers or a carrier will be my next upgrade, though.
    I keep deodorant at work.

Make sure that pre-shower is a cold one. If it's hot, you'll be warmed up and ready to sweat before you even start biking.

    just out of curiosity
isnt it pretty unusual to start smelling after a little bit of sweating? as long as you change youre clothes there shouldnt be any problem
and the more you sweat daily the less you smell atleast in my experience
also dont commute in synthetic stuff that shit smells pretty fast pretty bad

A merino wool undershirt works wonders as it doesn't hold a smell. Also, in the winter, woolen sweaters work better than jackets as they can actually breathe.

Completely agree. Taking a bath before riding to work and a good "towel bath" before proceeding to work is all we need. Deodorant is our friend 😅

Man, to me commuting without taking a shower is a deal breaker here in Brazil. Too hot, too far. No way people would tolerate being around me if I didn't take a shower. Although when I was in Sweden I used to commute everyday without taking a shower, it was a short commute though, around 15min.

instead of deodorant you can use baking soda. Wet your hand with the tap water and sprinkle baking soda on them, then rub your armpits with it.

You covered this but: take a shower before commute, rinse off with washcloth, dry off with a towel. Change into nice clothes if needed. Comb for hair that's all that is needed. Anything else is just extra

I drive a truck at night, and I'm by myself most of the time, so I just don't worry about it. Changing my clothes, and deodorant seem to be good enough to not bother me. I don't know what the day time driver thinks, but since he always leaves my truck smelling like ass I'm not too concerned with his comfort.

I just started to commute 22km to work that's 44km to and from, theirs no shower so I have to carry a small towel to freshen up. I do wear lightly because of the sweat, do it 3 times a week hoping to increase the mileage.

Yeah, but when other bike commuters pass me I have to show them who the big dog is - sweat or not. Change of clothes, right guard and a baseball cap to cover helmet hair. Kept in my work locker

  • @MondeSerenaWilliams

I find one of the most reliable way to not get sweaty is to get an upright Dutch-style bike or Japanese mamachari. The upright riding position is very comfortable and discourages you from going too fast. I've never even brought extra clothes because I do not sweat at all riding them (granted, my commute is only about 6 km, so your situation might differs). And because I do not wear athletic clothing, I also got discouraged from riding too fast.
Also, about that messy hair, just try ditching the helmet. If you ride slowly anyway I bet you don't even need them.

    • @PeterSipes
      @PeterSipes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, the upright bike does wonders that way. Also, living somewhere where mornings are really only hot in summer months helps too. I find for my 7:15 commute that I need a flannel shirt shortly after September starts and require that until late May. That's most of the school year.
