Ray perhaps had the most amazing timing of any musician ever. he never sang a song the same way twice, but he was never even close to being out of the pocket. he was just mind bogglingly talented. the most influential singer in American history.

I was lucky enough to have been at Willie Nelson's 70th birthday concert. It was an amazing lineup of guests and was recorded for a tv special. Ray Charles performed Georgia and made most of the audience cry. As soon as he finished they came out and said there was an issue with the recording gear and they needed him to do it again... to which the crowd cheered! His 2nd take was just as beautiful and emotional as his first and moved me just as much. I am so grateful to have seen him perform live, even close to the end of his life, his voice was still strong and nuanced, he packs more emotion into a single word than most singers get into an entire verse.

FYI, check out this video from the same concert. It's Willie, Ray Charles, and Leon Russel another absolute legend we lost doing "A Song For You." It's incredible watching these three brilliant musicians do this together and I was lucky enough to be there. th-cam.com/video/2UW4ELmVD9M/w-d-xo.html

I always so enjoy your reactions and when I saw Ray Charles and Georgia I had to stop and listen. I am 74 years old and was 13 in 1961 when I first heard Ray Charles and it changed my life. I collected all of his albums and even hung the covers on my wall. 6 years ago at our 50th HS reunion, everyone remembered me turning them on to Ray Charles🎶😊‼️ He was so soulful and his voice could just transport you wherever he wanted you to go. Thank you for this✌️🦋

Harriet - I guess that was when I too first heard Ray Charles. I used to have a little transistor radio that I would turn to a particular station (Radio Luxembourg - but all the DJs were British), and one evening I heard this voice singing Hide Nor Hair. I was hooked, absolutely hooked. Later I was to discover all the stuff he'd recorded on Atlantic. Absolute magic. And then right up to this day, hearing him, with Willie Nelson and Leon Russell, singing A Song For You, perhaps the most emotional I've ever felt listening to the great man, given that he had confided to Willie that he had inoperable liver cancer. For me, there was no-one anywhere near him.

Beth, When Ray Charles sings. The Singing is not just hearing. There's feeling along with it. When a singer can achieve that. It's called Soul.
There is no one color or gender to it. Just the ability through music or song to transcend your Soul to touch another.
I see it happen in your reaction. That's what so special. When Someone like Ray Charles sings.
    Rock on.

This performance just destroys the structure of the song - when you have complete mastery of a song you can do anything you want with it, you can lay it limply over the back of a chair, you can hoist it up a flagpole, anything. Ray Charles has this song wrapped around his finger and he can lead it anywhere. Sheer mastery, a real genius. I've heard the song a million times but never heard this performance, he is dragging, poking, flinging - I am blown away how this man can ... mm no words. How he just does what he does. I guarantee you the song sounded so different the next night. Wow wow wow. I hope one day I can be this loose and this precise all at the same time. Gobsmacked as they say elsewhere lol.

Hoagy Carmichael was a very well-know songwriter from the late 20s through the 50s, Other songs he wrote include; Lazy River, Stardust, and In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening. In addition to songwriting he also appeared in such movies as To Have and Have Not with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and the 1946 Best Picture, The Best Years of Our Lives. I attended Indiana University (his alma mater) in the 60s and one of the local restaurants (across the street from the Law School) had a booth labeled as the place where he had sat and written Stardust.

With a lot of singers, such as trained singers, they sing in a a technical manner but, with singers of the calibre of Ray Charles, it just comes naturally...he just feels the lyrics and melody and sings it in a style that comes naturally to him.

  • @jamestemple1309
    @jamestemple1309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, Beth, Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael wrote "Georgia". In addition, he wrote "Stardust" and 50 or so other very well known songs. And Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia" sets the high bar on this tune. Thanks for reacting to it.

I find it interesting in that it seems to my eye the more emotional the song the more variation between takes. Ray Charles varies the delivery quite a bit and it gives one the feeling that it relates to his emotional relation to the music at that moment.
    I could be wrong though.

Lord knows how many people recorded Georgia, but it's Ray's version that stands above them all. I see some people have mentioned other songs, particularly You Don't Know Me, but how about A Fool For You, either the studio recording or the live version on the Ray Charles At Newport album. Now that is my very favourite Ray Charles recording.

Hi Beth. I always enjoy your reviews and vocal experience. I also roar in time with your intro roar. Everytime! Lol. Anyways... Have you ever heard John Mayers "live version" of the Tom Petty classic,"Free Falling?" If not you should definitely give it a listen. It's wonderful.
He has some very experienced backups up there with him that just add so much richness the original completely lacked. Mayer also alters the entire tempo of the song so I suggest listening to Tom's fist then John's live... To fully appreciate the arrangement. So so good!

Hoagie Carmichael was so talented. He was self deprecating about his own voice but I enjoy it. He was in the classic Humphrey Bogart movie "To Have and Have Not" (playing piano and singing in the bar). It's not the quality of his voice but his phrasing that's amazing.

My Dad was a singer (not a pro, but a talented amateur). He always said that if you didn't put at least a little Ray Charles into a song, you were doing it wrong. Ray was one of those rare singers (Janis had it. Billie Holliday had it. Patsy Cline as well. Van Morrison sometimes) who reach in and grab your heart with something beyond great technique. I have no idea if it can be taught.

I'm a huge fan of your channel. I love your reactions. I have a new one for you. Well I suggested it a year ago. But, you really should check out John Mooreland. A very talented man who gets ignored in the music industry, probably because of his severe obesity. (Just a guess) this is from one of his live shows...so much emotion. You won't be disappointed.

I've always thought this song is about a woman, not the State.

I hate flutes used like this. They are very irritating!
