there is a road in my city that runs along a river and the speed limit is only 30( the rest is 40-60), so whenever anyone in a car goes too slow i just casually pass them as they look in awe 😂
when i saw that barrier was gone i was kinda sad, it's almost become a staple of the videos

Perfect music during the race
One of the reasons I subbed to this channel is because you're a great guy who shows you can do all the fun things you can do urban cycling while still respecting the laws. The last few videos have shown neglect for red lights and sometimes even peds with right of way. Red running gives the good cyclists a bad rep. I hope this doesn't become a trend because I really don't enjoy it :(
CptSchmidt, This is an issue I am constantly faced with by uploading videos to TH-cam. While I understand I have an audience and perhaps some responsibility to be morally and legally better than the norm to set a good example, I will ALWAYS put my safety first, followed extremely closely by the safety of others around me. That being said, I will not stop at every red light for the sake of stopping at it. If there are no cars or pedestrians around I will go through the light and risk getting a ticket (in the many years I've biked in NYC I have not received ONE ticket for bad behavior). Unfortunately NYC infrastructure has not been designed with cyclists in mind it puts cars as the primary mode of transportation, and following all laws can lead to dangerous situations.
I believe you are mainly referring to the last part of the video where we have some fun racing and got a bit carried away.
Keep in mind for every red light you see me disregard there are 200 more you don't see me stop at, because a video of waiting at red lights would be extremely boring.
I am not sure what I want to do about this issue yet, but cutting out red light violations would be creating a false narrative and image of myself, and adjusting my behavior to appease my viewers could lead to a dangerous situation where I make a bad call.
Believe me when I say this I will try to do better.

I won't be unsubbing and I'm going to keep watching regardless what you do :P You've got, bar none, the best cycling channel on TH-cam as far as I'm concerned. You're not full of yourself, respond to viewers in a great way. Although my channel is all about driving, I cycle just as much and actually commute to work by bike, but my dashcam isn't suited for my bike. NYC is a very different place from Halifax; I get what you mean that obeying every single road rule makes things more dangerous sometimes. Along my ride there are some lights that are only weight-activated, so I've gone through some reds too rather than waiting around for the next car to change the light for me. Same with stop signs, if nobody's coming, then so what?

Maple you try to commute on a bicycle in NYC as much has he does and see how fun it is to stop at every red light! As long as he is safe and isn't being an ass it shouldn't be an issue.

This was a great video..As a ebike owner (Bionx) I had a chuckle on the races against you on the streets especially with the first two who didn't even try to pedal to keep up with you. Those delivery bike guys are pretty annoying in NYC and give us real pedal assist e bikers a bad rap. I've had some guys challenge me while on my ebike and it's pretty hard when bionx limits the speed at 20 mph I have to pedal extremely hard to get it to 27 mph on a straight away and at least stay with a roadie or fixie. Here in the UK they aren't.
In NYC cyclists are only allowed to go through delayed reds. (Basically no, you have to stop for reds).

You know, I remember it being A LOT worse, last time I rode it, it wasn't terrible. Still not baby smooth but not "omg I'm going to have to true my wheels after this ride" bad

Those electric bikes seemed to be doing some serious speed! Is there no limit to what they're allowed to do? I have a bike with electric assist to my pedalling, but the motor is only allowed to run up to 27km/h over here! I can pedal on top of that with no assist however.
Also, I don't actually think I've seen an electric bike where you don't have to pedal. Are they common in NY?
In NYC (not sure about NY state). Motor bicycles WITHOUT assisted pedaling are illegal. Once in a while NYPD will crack down and confiscate a few hundred of them. I believe they're illegal for the same reason hover boards are, from a legal standpoint the city just doesn't know what they are or how to classify them. Is it a motor-powered vehicle or no? Also I heard they are responsible for a lot of pedestrians being hit in Manhattan as they are silent and go very fast.
Bicycles where you have to pedal to assist the motor are legal however. E-bikes have EXPLODED in numbers in the last few years. They are VERY popular with food delivery people. I see maybe a 7:1 ratio of them. For every 7 regular bikes I see 1 e-bike here in NYC.
the owner of my local bike shop has a Giant Full-E that can do up to 32Km/h with pedal assist, but he's been talking about contacting someone (possibly Giant themselves) to raise the limit since it has a 500W BB mounted motor

Fastest speed? There is a wicked downhill section in Springfield MA where I hit around 40mph, the brakes were useless at that point you just sort of hang on and pray lol
