- We received a spindle and pulley out of a Wholesale Tools TD-4 lathe that is in the need of repair. Both the shaft and pulley have wear in them that'll need to be corrected. In this video we begin with the repair of the spindle. I'll use the flame spray technique to bring the spindle size back to specs. In a separate video I'll share repairing the pulley.

I disagree with the people complaining about you expanding your skills and services. While I originally started watching for the manual machining, I enjoy seeing your evolution and watching the various types of content. Keep it up, Adam!

As long as he keeps it as 'CNC through the eyes of a manual machinist', I'm fine. I do NOT want to watch someone spewing about a bunch of G-code and watching someone doing CAD on a computer.

There’s a place for both manual and CNC machining. There is something to be said about the entertaining factor of manually machining plus the creativity involved.
I started manually machining and it wasn’t until i knew I reached my limits and needed CNC that i started that shift.

Regrinding those well-worn live centers would make a nice video. I'd be curious to see how you tackle that.
I would think he could machine his own. Ive made a lot of my own tooling and custom boring bars for my lathe. They turned out amazing.
It can be done but since live centers turn on their own bearings they would require a special setup.
Good to see you back in the old shop, feels more at home for me. Only thing better would be some old Motion metal hoggin videos again. Your success from those days has been outstanding, which is on full display in your new shop.

Adam, you saved my lathe! I have a very similar machine to the td4 that I picked up a few months ago. Excessive chatter in backgear despite spending hours trying to adjust it. What I realized after watching this video is that there is a set screw oil hole in the middle belt pulley that requires oiling, and was likely never oiled through the 50 year life of this machine. Chatter went away instantly! Hopefully you saved me a big repair. Thanks for all you do!

i love how you care for your machinery, i bought a lathe recently and had to take it apart completely because of the lack of care that the previous owners had, the bull gear had a chipped tooth on it and the cross slide nut is shot

Glad to see you working at the home shop. I like the finish, I think the flame sprayed metal is more consistent on hollow bar as it's easier to keep the temperature up.

Great video Adam. So satisfying to watch manual machining. This repair was likely needed due to running in back gear with inadequate oil. Close inspection of that pulley should show a removable screw you can take out to squirt oil down onto that spindle when you run in back gear. This looks like 80s Taiwan lathe. An owner's manual should cover the oiling procedure. Keep em oiled guys.

You would be correct about the shaft being used in branded lathes. I bought an old (probably from the 1950's) lathe sold by Select Machine Tool& Supply Company in Bell Gardens, CA. The phone number on the user manual does not have an area code! Naturally, they are no longer in business. It is listed as a 10" bench lathe. The cover of the manual says 5in x 23 in. I use a 6 inch chuck and an 8 inch faceplate. upon aquisition I also took mine completely apart for cleaning and new spindle seals. Anyway, the spindle on mine looks identical to this one.
