    Mild engine/gearbox oil leaks have a benefit in that they can aid in underbody rust protection :-)

    You are really lucky this one had a good oil leak, nothing preserves the underside of a car better than a spray of oil, when you have fixed the oil leak, I find the best thing to spray the chassis with is Waxoyl, it remains flexible, and it is wax based , the very worst thing is the bitumen based "protection" that allows rust to eat the steel away without being seen! Stay safe! Chris B.

    • @D3Sshooter
      @D3Sshooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments, Bitumen is indeed a very bad idea...but even waxoil will not help on a rusty chassis. Once its back to bear metal, it will be painted (epoxy), in several coats, then a good base paint, and multiple coats for back paint ... Waxoil inside the tubes...

    • @453421abcdefg12345
      @453421abcdefg12345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@D3Sshooter Yes, I think a coating of bitumen actually makes the underbody parts rust more, if we look at the thin sheet steel components around the transmission and axle where a mist of oil has "escaped" they are usually in perfect condition under the layer of oil, and they were only painted with the usual paint coating, the problem is getting back to clean bare metal on the chassis, the only way is to sand blast it I think, then an epoxy coat is fine, phosphoric acid can help to neutralise any awkward to access rust. Stay safe! Happy New Year! Chris B.

    Looks Good. As you probably know, the engine was used in many Ford cars. Parts should be easily available and not expensive. From what I remember most of the parts came from other cars. The owners club would be well worth contacting with help on sourcing parts.

    Nice find! I can relate to the relief of finding out that the chassis is in great shape. Good for you. I have to say that I normally don't particularly like yellow paint jobs but this one actually looks really good with the black accents. Somehow it looks just right for the car and its vibe. I worked at a TVR main agent around 1978, and in their day, these cars were very fast, they also did a turbo version, with a very complicated carb set up. Not sure if I remember right, but some had a fibre cam gear, which sounded like loose tappits, when it became worn, or that may have been the V4 engine? It was a long time ago!

    • @silvereith
      @silvereith 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes the Essex V6 had a fibre timing gear. A steel set was available but they were noisy. The other problem was the hexagonal rod that drove the oil pump from the distributor. It could round off and then no bottom end.

      @D3Sshooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Passing a UK MOT with racing harnesses is not an issue. They're perfectly legal in place of a normal seatbelt. The rules just say that some kind of seatbelt system must be in place for cars from 1966 onwards. The only issue you would have is if the racing harnesses were interfering with the rear seats, that would be a failure. However, you can just remove the rear seats and convert the car to a two-seater.
