    I think one attribute GENE had that many are lacking now is a strong belief in Humanity.For a man who fought in WW2,was an LA police officer,ya would think he had seen people at their worst but somehow his optimism in what we could become was overpowering.I know they are out there,somewhere.....

    I just recently found out, that this amazing human being is a relative of mine. I wish I would have discovered it sooner. I watched the reruns of Star Trek growing up in the '70s. I didn't matter how many times I'd seen the episodes I'd watch them over and over and over again. I wish I would have found that when I was younger that I was related to him.
    We have the same great grandfather
    He's Gene's 8x Great grandfather. My 9x great-grandfather.. 🌠

    Gene really was the duality of man embodied. On one hand he was all about optimism for the future with eliminating poverty and illiteracy and adventuring in to space with your family. On the other hand, even during this time he was a cocaine and booze addict who was completely unfaithful to his wife and son causing them a lot of pain. He was a complex figure.

    He chose a Scot as engineer because Scots are great ship builders? The English are the traditional sailors and ship builders. Nelson wasn't Scottish, and it was the English who repelled the Spanish Armada. Ironically, Roddenberry objected to having Picard played by an Englishman. They also originally intended to make the character Picard English. I wonder if it was Roddenberry who had them make him French instead?

    • @sciencefliestothemoon2305
      @sciencefliestothemoon2305 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yes, Nelson the builder, not the admiral, and the Armada that was mainly damaged by storms.
      But 5 seconds of google show that Scotland had large industrial shipbuilding.

    • @white-dragon4424
      @white-dragon4424 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sciencefliestothemoon2305 Firstly, I didn't say that Nelson built ships. Secondly, the Spanish Armada had already been defeated by the English fleet when it was forced to make their way around Scotland and was almost totally destroyed by storms. Lastly, we are quite capable of making our own ships in places like Plymouth and Portsmouth if the pro-unionist London government wasn't busy sending jobs up to Scotland in a desperate attempt to suck up to the Scots.

      @@sciencefliestothemoon2305 I think you misunderstand. When they were casting for TNG he strongly objected to making the Enterprise captain an Englishman, as if that was somehow inappropriate. Now, in contrast we hear him say in this video that he was all in favour of making the engineer a Scot, because they're somehow natural ship builders. I'd have you know that we were building and sailing ships around the world when the Scots were running around half naked and living in huts! If it wasn't for our sailors and ships there'd be no Jamestown, no Plymouth Rock, no Thirteen Colonies, no President George Washington, no USA or Canada, and no weird Anglophobic American talking a load of BS!

      Hey, that's both hard work and cleverness.

      Actually it was the common people that built the pyramids, and they did it willingly to support their pharaoh who to them was a god. The idea they used slaves is a common misconception.
