I just want to say, you said “I want to be a filmmaker”, my friend you already are :) these documentaries which they absolutely are are wonderfully made. Hope you go on to great things!
Judge me if you wish, but I actually got a little choked-up here! It always hits me a bit when an obvious passion-project comes to an end, and this one has been something that's consistently entertained and informed. Stirling efforts all around, Rowan. You're gonna be an absolutely kick-ass film maker.
I have loved this retrospective so much. I was feeling sad about this wrap-up.... but then... the Babylon 5 preview came on, the theme belted in my ears and got me pumped up. I am so ready.
This has been the best Star Trek breakdown ever!! Your attention to detail, the hours and hours of research, your likes and dislikes delivered with no malice or fanboy mentality, and that voice!! Hats off to you master influencer! Great job Fantastic job!!! Can't wait for Stargate, Star Wars, and BSG!!!
This was the most amazing Star Trek commentary series I have ever found. Balanced, interesting, well-researched and super entertaining. Would you consider doing an "early impressions" series for Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds?
Dear Rowan, As a literally lifelong devoted Trek fan, I just wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed your Star Trek Retrospective videos more than any other TH-cam videos on the franchise. Your vast knowledge about what went on behind and in front of the cameras has been fascinating. Your calm, conversationally paced voiceovers are a pleasure to listen to. And most of all, I believe that the information and insights that you have shared over the series have given me an even deeper appreciation of the franchise that I have loved all of my life. I have gained a deeper appreciation of the many previously-unseen creative people who made the TV shows and films possible. I consider watching your Star Trek videos the best use of the time I have spent losing myself to TH-cam. Thank you so much! P.S. How about a series about the making of Quantum Leap?
For me the best scenes in star trek are when the ship is severly damage and the crew are just fighting to survive. So i can definitely see why enterprise season 3 is your favorite.
I've enjoyed your Star Trek retrospectives immensely, but your Babylon 5 teaser at the end of Part 19 has me jonesing! I've been watching Star Trek since 1966, and I love the franchise, despite some missteps along the way. But Babylon 5 has got to be my favorite SF series ever. This should be groundbreaking!
Count me in as one of the many people who really enjoyed the retrospective series. I really appreciate the comment that a lot of channels get overly nitpicky when it comes to criticism. I understand that it's part of what they do, given that they are relying on other content to generate their own content. But after awhile I feel too many of them nitpick because they feel the need to have critical thoughts...and it gets exhausting. So the tone of this series was very welcome and the opinions were nicely presented.
I'd thought that there was a smaller campaign of support from sci-fi writers spearheaded by Isaac Asimov to get a second season, and then the Trimbles led a broader fan campaign in season 2. That whole time has been incredibly mythologized, so it's hard to get at what the truth is. Paris is, as a character, kind of the inverse of Locarno. Locarno is your buddy in public but a nasty piece of work privately. Paris in the beginning is trying to lean into "I'm a real bad dude, you shouldn't get mixed up with me" while also immediately attaching himself to the greenhorn that needs someone to keep him out of trouble.
I very much dislike every Star Trek series and film. But I loved every last minute of these videos. They really distill the very best qualities of the series into something I can appreciate and enjoy.
Well I'm glad the mistake was spotted where you said, "the means justify the ends". I had noticed that on another video somewhere! My question would be if you could live in the late 23rd or late 24th century (or any time coinciding with one of the series) in the Star Trek galaxy, where would you like to live and what species would you like to be?
Thanks for having my question on here, you are actually my inspiration for the content I'm working on (haven't released sadly yet) and I hope to become a filmmaker too!
You have done wonderful work on this and I thank you for all your time and effort. It's interesting to me to hear the bit about the Tom Paris/Nick Lucarno hulabaloo, because RDM recently said on an episode of The Delta Flyers that when he read for the part, he had a beard at the time and he said one of the producers (I think he said Berman's name, but I'm not 100% on that without going back to listen to it) handed him a razor and told him to go into the bathroom and shave it off, and then come back and read for them again. According to RDM, the reason this producer gave him for needing him to shave right away was: "He said to me that they didn't see Nick Lucarno, which was the whole reason they they wanted me on the show." He was not clear on whether or not they were thinking of making the part Nick Lucarno, so maybe they asked him to come in and read for a "Lucarno type" of character. But it _is_ a little weird that they would have the same actor come back and play the same type of character, only more redeemable. But ofc, that's very Berman, too, to take someone else's story idea or character profile and change it just enough to claim it's an original creation out of his own brain rather than someone else's work. Sadly, Gene did a lot of the same stuff in his day.
I loved this series! I almost NEVER watch videos that the algorithm serves up for me, as I know what I want to watch when I have those few hours a week I get to watch TH-cam, and its almost never what TH-cam wants me to watch. However, it served up the TNG Retrospective for me when I fell asleep watching something else after a late night at work, so when I woke up, it was part way through that video. Usually I just turn off the sound and go back to sleep, but the Narrating, Editing, and information was so well done, that I continued to watch it, and subscribed to the channel after the video finished, and made it a point to start from the beginning of your series the next chance I got, and I am really glad I did! As someone else mentioned above, I also almost came to tears (maybe a little hyperbolic, but definitely not that far from reality) when I learned in this video that you are moving on from the Star Trek Series. I love ALL of your videos so much, that I was looking forward to other topical videos on Star Trek. But, as someone who only watched Babylon 5 a little bit in my youth, I am looking forward to your series on that to inform me on whether I should go back and watch the entire thing. I look forward to all your coming work, and will definitely look out for any film projects you are involved in. If you can post word of any work you are involved in up on the channel, or your community tab, to let us viewers know we have something awesome to check out, that would be amazing. Appreciate all the hard work! Much Love!
Just another who wants to congratulate and thank you for the retrospectives! After all the trek rewatching I’ve done the last few years, this was refreshing and fun and informative and made me excited to dive in yet again!
Thank you for all the tedious hours putting this delightful series together for us fans. This might be the most comprehensive Star Trek documentary in the known galaxy. 🖖
It's so great to hear you liked Ent season 1 and 2 more. I've never seen why people have such negative things to say about those seasons. I always found most of those episodes enjoyable.
man, you did with these retrospectives something on a level never done before for star trek. i heard bits on other videos, but your _documentaries_ are something else. (also, can't wait for B5 retrospective, the intro gave me chills)
I do appreciate your correction of "the means justify the ends" error. While watching the video, it really grated on me. I even said aloud, "It's the ends justify the means!!!" I didn't comment, because of all the children who also watched these, and love nothing more than to insult people. And I didn't feel like being insulted that day. So thanks. I can sleep more soundly now.
Rowan the best compliment I can give these videos is to say that, when they ended, it left me with a feeling very similar to that which I experienced when the titles rolled on tge last ever episode of TNG.
I didn't always agree with you--cough Abrams cough--but I thoroughly enjoyed the series. You are one of the few reliably and consistently enjoyable channels here.
Great job on all of these! Starting a few years ago, I only had a foot in the door with watching tng clips and finally starting season 1. Somewhere between falling in LOVE with The Next Generation, then Deep Space Nine (my personal favorite), I found your retrospectives. I love tv and culture history, so exploring the Star Trek side of that through your videos has been a wonderful experience. I hope you do more in the future and that you fulfill your goals in filmmaking. You already have a gift for documentaries. Live Long and Prosper
Thank you for sharing your video-documentary series / retrospectives on Trek. I find myself drawn to the long form video retro and yours are truly well crafter,.top-tier efforts. Thank you, sincerely. "A fan!"
I absolutely have loved these videos. They're so very well thought out, well written, and thoroughly entertaining. I've become a huge fan of your work through discovering this series, and having actually lived through the entire Star Trek pantheon, I appreciate your attention to detail, and your obvious love of the subject. Looking forward to much, much more!
Can't wait for the B5 review. B5 is is my opinion the best SF series ever made, it changed SF for ever and the way a series is constructed with a story line. The CGI was amazing for the time.....
Rowan, you are a beast of a researcher and your voice is the thing that retrospectives are made of ! I enjoyed your retrospectives more than some of the “official” documentaries I have seen over the many years of viewing Star Trek in its many incantations. I note what you say about Star Trek The Animated Series, but I came across a recent docuseries on Amazon Prime called “Centre Seat” (I think it’s actually an IMDB production which Prime can show but with ads. Maybe ??) and the episode on the animated series is actually very good and turned my head sufficiently to give it some thought again. I’m also pleased that you gave an enormous nod to the Clever Dick Films’ Dr Who retro as, after I had watched and enjoyed that (I’m probably more into Dr Who than Trek but it’s close !), I happened to find your videos and thought that yours were at the same standard as his; and of course both of you have that lovely, silky voice that suits narration. I must confess that I am really looking forward to the release of the Babylon 5 retro’s as I loved that show, and I remember the excitement and tension as Series 2 and 3 unravelled themselves. Many thanks for your work, it is worth it believe me.
when i first started watching doctor who and star trek retrospectives I always got you and Clever Dick mixed up in my head at the time. you're at least on par at this point.
Actually I have not only watched your retrospective series, I have re-watched it several times. I find it entertaining informative and just fun to watch! Like you I am a Star Trek freak, so when I can’t watch Star Trek, the retrospectives are a good substitute
Loved every minute of your Retrospectives. Been watching Star Trek for the better part of 50 years, since I was a little kid. Really looking forward to Babylon 5 as I recently did a full re-warch of all things B5. Thanks RJC
Yay! I was featured. Thank you so much, I loved the series and I've actually gotten a friend into Star Trek because he actually loved your retrospective series before even seeing any Trek. Just thought you'd like to hear that. I've never seen Babylon 5 before but I feel like you're definitely gonna get me into it. Also it made me giggle to hear you read off a username I made back in middle school and just stuck with
I loved this series. I hope Rowan manages to do a few more retrospective videos before he finds his film making career: a Babylon 5 one naturally opens up to the idea of doing ones on descendent titles like Battlestar Galactica and The Expanse, and I’d love to see his take on those! But good luck to all your future efforts Rowan!
The fact that you can acknowledge such a small slip up as the means justify the ends, it's another reason why I will subscribe and watch the other series. Even if I'm not a fan of them. Hey you know what? Maybe you could even change my mind. I mean I could see your argument for why the newer Star Trek had its good points.
This was a great series, you did a fantastic job. And I give you props for pointing out your own mistakes, although to be honest, by comparison with what you got right, the handful of mistakes you pointed out were pretty minor. You have nothing to be ashamed of, we are all human. But many TH-camrs would not be so honest. I will comment about TAS...I think this may be a generational thing. If I remember correctly, you said you grew up with TNG, which means TAS was probably before you were born, or when you were very small. I grew up with TOS, and was a teenager during that long drought between 1969's cancellation and 1979s TMP. For us, those two quick seasons of TAS were like a lung-full of oxygen to a drowning man. It meant a lot more to us than it probably did to you. I understand that. But at the time, we Trekkie's had no idea there would ever be another series or any films. For all we knew TAS was going to be it. So again, it meant more to my generation. But I can see that it probably seems like an irrelevant footnote to younger fans. And famously, Roddenberry himself didn't consider it canon for many years (although I read somewhere that eventually he changed his mind about that, but I'm not sure.) Anyway, I never really got in to B5, but I am interested in watching your retrospective, maybe it will get me to go back and try and watch it.
Excellent intro to the B5 retrospective. I've been rewatching it with my wife recently, so I'm extra excited for this. Thank you for all the wonderful content that you make.
I wished you'd continue this retrospective and include Discovery, Picard, Brave new worlds. How different they are and your thoughts about them. There's the fact that reviewing current series isn't a retrospective. But I'd love to see some analysis about what was published by writers, creative direction, etc.
I always thought that this retrospective reminded me a lot of the Clever Dick Films series on Doctor Who, It's great to hear that it was a huge inspiration.
You've made YT your full-time job? That's some pretty impressive growth 👍 You may be able to fit in a Picard Retrospective next year when it ends.. of course it would be hard to be crazier than Redlettermedias
I agree with season 3 of Enterprise and season 4 of DS9. I think Way of Warrior followed by The Visitor is right up there with Best of Both Worlds/Family as the best 3 Episodes in a row. Azati Prime/Damage/The Forgotten are an incredible triple hitter as well
Rowan, I may disagree with some of your opinions, particularly the direction of Trek these days, but I'm happy to be here and appreciate the excellent work you've put in to the videos. I look forward to everything you've got in the pipeline.
I loved this series you've made.. It really felt like an actual documentairy you could see on tv itself.. You really did a great job and it's a bummer the Star Trek Retrospective series has ended.. Who knows, by the time Picard, Lower Decks, Discovery and Strange New Worlds end, you could make an actual tv documentairy.. Keep up the excellent work!!
Um actually...this was amazing. Thanks for all of your insight and editing efforts with this series. Of all the channels I've encountered in my travels...this was the most...engaging.
The biggest mistake in Star Trek in general, among both fans and scriptwriters is the constant reference to "deflector shields". Roddenberry had meetings with writers to explain that deflectors and shields are two separate systems with wildly different functions. Somehow, this error persists and it's infuriating.
That issue may have been exacerbated by Star Wars seeping into the cultural consciousness; the term deflector shield is definitely prevalent there, though it may have been inspired by misuse of the term in Star Trek to begin with.
I totally agree with you on question of Paris. I think the cadet was irredeemable but the frame of the character was easily applied to Paris. I think that if it was the same name as the cadet people would always be relating back to that incident and it would’ve hurt the Paris character overall
Your videos are absolutely brilliant. The errors you outline are very minor. Love the Babylon 5 part 1 episode. Keep up the great work and hope you achieve your professional ambitions with your next big project
Very interesting and am glad I 'discovered' it! As usual most adults didn't like the animated series and thought it was just for kids. I guess maybe the reason I fell for the animated was because even at 78, I still like the same things now as when I was 'a kid.' Peter Pan has nothing on me! Live Long and Prosper, Everyone...
I sincerely enjoyed your retrospective series. Among the many retrospectives I've watched this series is among the best. I am very much looking forward to your Babylon 5 series next. I have tried several times to get into the series and I recognised it's potential but I still didn't last past it's first season. So I'm hoping you can show me what I'm missing out on.
Your in depth coverage of trek is amazing. I’ve listened to each video multiple times because you manage to bring all of it to life so epically. I hope you revisit it when the modern era of trek starts to come to an end. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Picard.
Tremendous work with all these Rownan. Can't wait for your retrospective on BAB5. Also, it's nice to see you come around on ENT seasons 1 and 2. Some great trek in there and it goes underrepresented.
I think you and Lore Reloaded should team up and do a collaborative overall retrospective. If you haven't had the chance, he has a 7 hour DS9 Dominion War overview which is... well... astonishing.
Well done and thank you Rowan, the ST retrospectives have been sensational, I've learnt so much I didn't already, every day's a school day. They helped make lockdown a lot more bearable. Slainte mhath.
I would love to see you burgeon in your desired path, though I also really value the work you put into these. One of the last few nerdy moments my ex and I shared together before having issues was watching your Voyager retrospective, means a lot to be able to share passions with loved ones and you helped in that.
Well, Jerry Goldsmith is THE Star Trek composer, I think. While Alexander Courage's score shaped the Star Trek myth, the theme Goldsmith wrote is not just for a Star Trek series, it is for Star Trek.
Looking forward to your B5 retrospective as I rewatch the entirety of the show for the fifth time, (apart from Crusade, which I don't own). This time I'm watching the Amazon digital versions rather than my DVDs which ruined a major, later episode by removing a gigantic character moment because they cut out pre-credit sequences. Also, the DVD widescreen reformat buggered up a lot of shots. Hope you cover the TV movies too and, as much as I love Stewart Copeland's scores - especially The Equalizer show - mention how much Christopher Franke's music added to the series; The version of The Gathering rescored by him is far superior. Good luck with the retrospective, see you in The Zocalo.
in my opinion at least, you more than met the standards you had set for yourself. These are not some of the finest documentaries on Star Trek on TH-cam, these are some of the finest documentaries on a tv franchise period. Worthy of a DVD or iTunes release actually, if Paramount was so inclined. I also think it's really great that you stand by and correct your mistakes. I've seen almost no one on TH-cam who does that, at least with that kind of content. I'm looking forward to the B5 retrospectives. Here's wishing you all the best on your further journey as a filmmaker and also hoping for more retrospectives of the kind as long as you like to do them. Cheers. Have a nice day! Your continental neighbor from Central Europe.
This is your full-time job now? Congratulations! You have worked hard, we have enjoyed your content and interacting with you, and you deserve your success!
Regardless of whether or not you'll end up creating them all on your own, just be involved in part, or allow other creators on this channel to do them - I really hope there will be Retrospectives or some equivalent on the new Trek shows! In a way, seeing another creator on here carry on that 'legacy' would even be more exciting!
I have to admit, I thought about "means justify the ends" for a little bit because I knew it sounded odd when you said it but I thought it could be a way to say the opposite...but that didn't make sense for Odo.
I’m so pleased you mentioned Clever Dick Films as your inspiration for your Star Trek Reviews as this was a series I thoroughly enjoyed before stumbling in your Channel. The series was so well researched & produced that I hoped someone would take the same commitment to producing a similar quality retrospective for Star Trek - & by sheer chance I stumbled in your channel. I’m hoping there’s similar ones for my other passions, Disney & Bond movies (although there is at least one enjoyable Disney series in the form of Electric Dragon 505, but as yet I’m still trying to track down a decent 007 Retrospective up to the quality of this Channel or Clever Dick programmes). If you know of any or think you’re up to the task please let me know, or maybe I’ll just have to learn how to do it myself. 😉 Anyway congrats from a fellow Scot (living in Spain) for the hours of commitment & the subsequent hours of entertaining me as well as your other followers. I do intend to comment on each of the other shows on your Star Trek Retrospectives, but couldn’t resist commenting here when you mentioned your inspiration being the quality product of Clever Dick Films. In closing I have to say you certainly equalled CDF’s quality & entertainment value on your own series. I only wish there were more to follow on your Star Trek ones. Good luck with all your future ventures. Best wishes & thoughts, Andrew R.
"means justify the ends" should refer to the thing in startrek where they stick to their principles despite knowing it will end really badly

This series has been so well done Rowan, every one of these retrospectives has been a small treasure. Looking forward to the Babylon 5 one.
I just want to say, you said “I want to be a filmmaker”, my friend you already are :) these documentaries which they absolutely are are wonderfully made. Hope you go on to great things!
I want to echo this. Be confident and take some chances, I’m sure you could produce more quality films/docs
Judge me if you wish, but I actually got a little choked-up here!

08:05 TLDW, if someone buys my scripts? Hell no…if they don’t, Hell yes!
I'm so looking forward to Babylon5 getting the same deep dive as these retrospectives.
Keeping my fingers crossed for a deeper look into the movies as well!
This was the most amazing Star Trek commentary series I have ever found. Balanced, interesting, well-researched and super entertaining. Would you consider doing an "early impressions" series for Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds?
Oh. Yup. I just wanted to say that.
I have never been as excited about anything on TH-cam as I am about your Babylon 5 retrospective. Thank you for all you do.
I just come here to enjoy your glottal stops when pronouncing T's between vowels. Great work as usual!
Dear Rowan, As a literally lifelong devoted Trek fan, I just wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed your Star Trek Retrospective videos more than any other TH-cam videos on the franchise. For catching 'means justify the ends' yourself, you are now my favorite TH-camr.

Truly, a slow clap crescendoing to a full on extended standing ovation. What a fantastic series. Well, well done. Ken Burns level stuff here.
Well done Sir...
The best part about this series is just how rewatchable it is! I can easily put on any part and rewatch all of it and still be so intrigued!
I very much dislike every Star Trek series and film.
But I loved every last minute of these videos. They really distill the very best qualities of the series into something I can appreciate and enjoy.
Thoroughly enjoyed the _Star Trek_ Retrospective series. Looking forward to the _Babylon 5_ series.
For The Algorithm!
Now that Picard Season 3 is wrapped up, does this mean a part 20 is in the works?
Thank you for your time and effort! Your love for these shows really shows! Cannot wait for more.

Your retrospectives are great and objective.
Took episodes like this, for me to realize, you like things in Star Trek, that I really dislike.
3:53 THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS! I was always convinced of the “royalties” story but you’ve changed my mind.
I burned through the whole retrospective while home sick and ive absolutely loved it. Fantastoc work!

I actually got excited as you mimicked the B5 introduction.
Not to distract from the interesting and well-made retrospective of, well...the retrospective, but that preview of B5 has me so hyped!
Really enjoyed these reviews of the Kelvin universe Star Trek films. I will now go back and watch the rest. Thank you.
The whole series was amazing. I can imagine how much work you put into this. I had a blast binging this. Keep up the great work.
I like watching the retrospect as much as star trek. I even re-watch them.
So pumped for the B5 retrospective. Thank you for all your excellent work with Star Trek.
I always thought that this retrospective reminded me a lot of the Clever Dick Films series on Doctor Who, It's great to hear that it was a huge inspiration.
This series was amazing! Please update for Disco, Lower Decks, Picard and SNWorlds in more details!
What a great TH-cam series! I've loved all of it!
The sneak peak for B5 and that awesome music track has made me want to rewatch the entire thing!
I cannot wait for the Babylon 5 retrospective. I absolutely LOVE Star Trek, but for me, Babylon 5 is EVEN BETTER! And that’s saying a lot.
Um actually...this was amazing. Thanks for all of your insight and editing efforts with this series. Of all the channels I've encountered in my travels...this was the most...engaging.
I was THRILLED to discover your series. So great, your voice is amazing and soothing and kept my attention the whole was through. BRAVO!!!
Thank you for this retrospective. Can't wait for the next one! Cheers. LLAP!
These have been brilliant. Better than most commercially released efforts.
You have done better video's than a ton of properly produced documentaries Rowan. Hope you do plenty more.
i fully binged this. nice saga.
Your in depth coverage of trek is amazing. I’ve listened to each video multiple times because you manage to bring all of it to life so epically. I hope you revisit it when the modern era of trek starts to come to an end. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Picard.
Nice shot out to Oliver Harper's reviews & Indigo's Cyberpunk retrospectives. I a big fan of both their works too
Agreed, CleverDick's Doctor Who series is fantastic. Highly recommended.
I totally agree with you about the animated series.
Rowan. Your brogue is wonderful. Edinburgh I'm guessing?
Well done and thank you Rowan, the ST retrospectives have been sensational, I've learnt so much I didn't already, every day's a school day. They helped make lockdown a lot more bearable. Slainte mhath.
Oh, I would absolutely love it if you did an X-Files retrospective! I've been thinking about rewatching it for a while.
Thanks for answering my question.
Wow. I never thought I'd meet someone who agrees that Enterprise Season 3 is the best Star Trek season.
Now there are 3 of us!
@@dankeefer8859 Wow! Impressive 🤣
Awesome video and series overall. Excited to see whatever you cover in the future. Thanks.
in my opinion at least, you more than met the standards you had set for yourself.
I would love a X-Files Retrospective! I've been doing a rewatch the last few weeks.
I love your Star Trek reviews and Clever Dick Films reviews of Doctor Who, both are equally great.
Anyway congrats from a fellow Scot (living in Spain) for the hours of commitment & the subsequent hours of entertaining me as well as your other followers.
Best wishes & thoughts,
Andrew R.
