    This is excellent advice. I had a great trainer who said exactly the same things, especially focusing on watching the chest/shoulders. He was a champion in the Soviet system, where they focus on repetition, especially on finding range by doing drills (forward/backward, one punches straight in rhythm and the other slips and counters on the chest). Doing that a zillion times in motion was a lot better than bag work. The end product is a disciplined style like Dimitri Bivol's.

    • @jimmynich4791

    Hey Tony!!! I was was teaching a kick boxing class years ago. Two guys were sparring, one guy threw a round house kick and the other guy tried to dodge it by moving his head down. Darn if also he didn't move his head in the direction the kick was coming from. I have never seen such solid contact. He was out on his feet for hours! Great point about moving in the same direction as the punch. Say hi the the wifey for me! Bill

    The most important martial arts lesson I learned is to try and take in the entire picture at once. Don't focus on any one part or you'll get hit from where you're not looking.
    It's great to hear this from a boxer. I'm just beginning at boxing and I heard a lot of people say "focus on the shoulders" but I'm always asking "then how do you hit them in the face?"

    While sparring, some guys looking in the eyes, some looking at the chest.
    When I first started kickboxing my coach told me I should look in the eyes. Coming from Judo-background I was used to looking at the chest/ core, you can see every move coming.
    Looking in the eyes never worked for me, I was getting my ass kicked. But some dudes seem to fight way better that way.

    I've read that some fighters, especially in-fighters, will actually step into punch they see coming as a means to smother the power. You know, dive in at the right moment to screw up the technique. I always figured that that is a more advanced tactic considering it sound counter intuitive and a little insane.

  • @wanna-be-cowboy
    @wanna-be-cowboy ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Tony. 1 extra point I would make is that if your are cutting weight, make sure your not cutting weight too fast. Ive been in the martial arts, boxing space since you was 4 so 31 years this year and have never even been buckled in all that time from a headshot. (Body shots are extra gravy right enough). I was trying to lose weight and lose it super fast and the extra pounds were shifting. However I jumped in to spar a friend and he hit me with an uppercut, the kind I've ate before, but this time my legs buckled good, I managed to stay on my feet but the rest of the round was like I was having an out of body experience. We really believe it was because I had lost so much weight, including muscle so quickly without much conditioning and thus my body had no shock absorption any more.

    • @rustyjones7908
      @rustyjones7908 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am no fighter, but I've been cutting deep since January and I've noticed a pretty big loss in strength. I find that "not being too fat to move" is more than a fair tradeoff (60 pounds down, 20 to go) but I have lost a good 10-20 off all my compound lifts in that time.

    So basically, the best way to take a punch is to minimize the impact of the opponent's punch (or by not getting hit at all). The only tangibly physical characteristic that makes someone tougher in terms of absorbing punches is to develop strong neck muscles. Wilfred Benitez (hall of fame boxer) said that no one really has a good chin. Basically, every boxer has the potential to getting knocked out if they get hit under the right circumstances.
    Having a poor chin is really just a euphemism for having a poor defense.

  • @DemonVegito-p6v
    @DemonVegito-p6v 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Tightening your jaw and clenching your teeth can help mitigate the impact of a punch to some extent. Here's how:
    1. **Stabilizing the Jaw:** When you clench your teeth and tighten your jaw muscles, you stabilize the jawbone, which can reduce the risk of it being broken or dislocated during a punch.
    2. **Preventing Whiplash:** Tightening the jaw can help reduce the "whiplash" effect where the head is violently snapped back and forth, which can exacerbate the force transmitted to the brain.
    However, it's important to note:
    - **Force Transmission:** Even with a clenched jaw, the force of a punch can still be transmitted to the brain. The brain floats in cerebrospinal fluid inside the skull, and sudden impacts can cause it to move rapidly, leading to a concussion or other brain injuries.
    - **Mouthguards:** In boxing and other contact sports, athletes often use mouthguards to protect their teeth and jaws. Mouthguards can help distribute the force of a punch more evenly and reduce the risk of dental and jaw injuries.
    Overall, while tightening your jaw can provide some protection, it is not a foolproof method to prevent all injuries from a punch. Proper defensive techniques, head movement, and protective gear are crucial for minimizing the risk of injury in combat sports.

    @celystal2831 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Tensing up and moving away from the motion of the punch not only works for this, it works for almost any other attack that anyone throws at you
    Can confirm it works because I got punched in both the jaw and stomach in quick succession and it worked perfectly
    Oh and since I am so skinny, any direct hit I tank will knock me down almost instantly

    After 2 weeks
    I did my first sparing , against 2
    (Fun fact : first time to watch a boxing fight was at the gym)
    And my second fight after a week was against one person but trained
    The things that happened to me that I was knocked easley

    My football coach used to say that, if you bite on a mouthpiece your brain will gain some stability.
    It's supposed to be thanks to whatever that is that you can feel moving on your skull when biting your teeth together and you touch your temple.
    Is that true?

    @Tony_Jeffries Number 1. tip- Myth busting
    Hi Tony, first of all, thank you for a great content. But, since you're a reasonable guy I just wanted to help you improve it even more with telling you your number 1. tip is (partly) a misconseption.
    Yes, with strenghtening your neck you decrease chances of whiplash (neck injury).
    No, you don't absorb force from the punch with decreasing motion of your head. The motion of the brain inside the skull will still have to move, and if you stay your head static, its more or less proportional to the force of the punch.
    So... Summary: With stronger neck you'll decrease your chance for neck injury, but will not decrease chance of brain injury.
    Important- though brain movement is more or less the same with decreasing head and neck movement, it's possible that it really helps in making a chin stronger with less proprioceptive input (from eyes, vestibular system, and also muscle spindles etc), but it's not due to decreased brain movement. So, different mechanism. Why I think it's important? Because somebody will make neck stronger to protect the brain, what is not the case.
    One more, thanks for a great content and I hope my comment will help you a tiny bit in improving your channel a tiny bit more. You rock. 🤟

    i did ju jitsu before boxing and i always wondered why i took punches so well turns out my neck was stronger than my arms (im being serious i can lift more with my neck than both arms can bench)
