For irrigating grodan cubes, I'd recommend looking up the GroGuide brochure. Page 6 goes through figuring out full saturation weight, and the mL amounts for each cycle based off slab/block volume.
You nailed it, over saturation of the grow cube, especially in the early seedling period i.e. first 2 weeks, leading to an anoxic cube . Must have a wet/dry cycle, the very reason that incremental plant grow cube and pot sizing exists. Feeding/watering timings, E.C. values and light intensity should all increase incrementally to match the bio-mass growth of the plant. Could have used air stone(s) in the reservoir to help oxygenate nutrient solution, additionally nutrient solution temperature may have been too high, also depleting O2 content as you are aware. Covering the grow cube tops with even 'loose' panda film is great for stopping algae growth, but will retard the wet/dry cycling of the cube slightly, as you mention regarding the Hydro Cucumber Farm cubes. Making some strategic vent holes in plastic covers may help if required. Notice the melon plants main stem never thickened or increased in girth at the base of the plant or in general, I find this is always a good indication that healthy rhizosphere growth is occurring in the block or any media for that matter and that the plant is up-taking food/water effectively. Environmental air movement (fans) and air exchange (exhausting stale air for fresh) is crucial in maximizing wet/dry cycling of the plant media, while improving overall growth and strengthening of the plant. Great video and explanation of the hydro facility operations. Fantastic time lapse footage as usual. Cheers.
Great reply, I agree and was thinking environmental conditions needed more explanation. The rock wool growing medium usually holds +80% water retention and the grow may have suited smaller burst of nutrient and long oxygen pauses. But ya gotta love Hoocho’s go at this - brilliant. The commercial farmer was a great example of an A1 setup. The end diagnosis was serious root porn mate 🙏buy no Happy ending as we discovered the root didn’t penetrate 🤪

Your videos were so much help, I ventured into Dutch buckets out in the garden this year and the results are so much better than any soil growing I have done in the past.
Man, I really enjoy these longer videos of yours showing multiple aspects of grow systems trial and error. I transplanted everything I had grown into my gutter system and last night there was a crazy freeze unexpectedly. I lost a ton of plants and am super bummed.

Why hide a valuable (and avoidable) lesson. Also I thought it was super interesting seeing how relatively quickly the plant died once no energy input occurred. Would’ve thought the dormancy period would be longer... I guess it’s super unnatural to not receive any light at all for multiple days.
@@Hoocho I agree 100%. That's how we learn, by making screw ups. I just killed a bunch of seedlings by having them too close to a light and they got too hot. Sadly a bit of an expensive screw up. I hear you also, you would think a plant would survive a couple of days without light. In the UK they grow plants by candle light. Some plants are just prima donnas.
The water was stuck in the soggy cube because the wrapper was not removed. Removing the wrapper will also cause the roots to air prune at the sides rather than circle. Then the air pruned roots will fill out with thousands of roots back to the main root.
Magic cat disappeared at 19:56. Spooky. Rock wool is cool stuff. I have not used the large sizes of rock wool but I know that even the 1 incher holds a ton of water for quite a long time.
Try adding a small aquarium air pump connected to a small bubbler rock in the reservoir. Works wonders for DWC where saturation is not an issue. Early in the lifecycle it might allow higher saturation levels of rockwool without negative effects; this way you're less likely to have dangerous dry periods between pulsing. Just mind the humidity when doing this in any enclosed space, because the humid air has to go somewhere after bubbling. In conjunction with the air pump/stone, add some slots below the rockwool so that mature roots can venture into the reservoir (keep them out of your pump though!). Then you can dial back pulse rate as the plant matures without as much fear of roots drying completely if your pulse time isn't perfect. The dual root zones will give much more resilience to the system. (Disclaimer: I am not a professional. Only small grow experience. Please research before implementing in any situation where losses are not acceptable.) p.s. Great video! I love to see learning in progress. (Subscribed)
@@Hoocho If you run the test again try using one grodan cube and one cultilene cube. You will see the difference.. Personally I prefer aero as there`s no media cost and its easy to see what the roots are doing without killing the plant or needing x-ray specs.
what about slicing the Big cube into sections, and place air spacers every 1 inch in the "layer cake" so that they can get air wherever the roots are developing?
I use a hot water geyser drip tray with thick polyester batting from upholstery shop layer in the bottom and my Rockwool goes on top of that. The tray is at an angle and water falls back into the reservoir at the bottom and gets injected on the high side every 3 hours. Roots grow under the polyester. I also put a sheet of panda film over to block light. Roots are aerated as they dry down between cycles.
Those roots look like they were starting to circle under the plastic. Could they be covered from light to tackle the algae but have an air gap to enable some air pruning to the sides? Might encourage the bottom growth into the reservoir more?
Did you find out from the hydroponic greenhouse how they pollinate their plants? i thought it wouldnt be insect due to the traps above the plants but wasnt sure.

Depends on stage of growth, environmental conditions, and condition the rockwool is in. You want to irrigate just as the rockwool starts to move from moist to dry.

Better off throwing the seed into the big cube hole and then fill with a plug as it grows. I sprout seeds rip the cube and put them in as low as possible let the root hang out the bottom
Way to wet and you started the little cube inside the big cube to early, you gotta establish the small cube first and air prune the root system of that little cube so roots are exploding, then put them in the big cube and only irrigate as it drys out maybe once every 2-3 days in the beginning maybe longer depending on temps and demand, once they are established in the big cube with roots coming out the bottom they will handle multiple feeding, its a wonder you didnt get root rot .
I would try to wrap off the plastic on the cube in the very beginning. Those, who like to grow plants in a fabric grow bags, always talk about the air pruning of the roots. They say, that in a plastic pot roots just go round it, but in a fabric they stop growing when they come in to air and start to make new branches inside the grow medium. Just guessing...
Maybe the pulse water rate is too aggressive for just two plants? They have 100's of water loving vacuums sucking up the water so they can be more aggressive.

Have you considered wrapping the rock wool cubes in fabric? Total not a hydo thing but it would encourage air pruning if roots and expansion in fine roots back into the block. Your watering change makes sense.
Great video as always. I have built in my garden a mini lean-to greenhouse with hydroponic cascade. It was good to see this video to remind me of the airflow and humidity factor that is needed. With regard to those cubes - far too dense for that type of delicate root network. Your earlier videos that taught me the efficiency of Perlite and vermiculite mix would achieve far greater success. More freedom for the root network, more oxygen free-flow, less water stagnation. Basically, the simple growing medium using far less equipment to inject pulse and drain works with a suitable ratio. Yes, it is half Kratky and half NFT, but lid covered and suspended in a muslin bag means no algae!
I tend to agree with Hoocho -- cube seems waterlogged rather than too dense, so the roots are looking for oxygen. Out of curiosity Hoocho, what was your watering schedule/pulsing?
In his setup, none. Delta cubes and slabs are more suited to drain-waste systems. Moving the emitter to the slab allows the cube to become dry-space as the water table drops to the bottom of the slab, not the cube. A cube sitting on top of a non-similar surface will always cause it to retain a steep water profile regardless of water interval. This is fine for early plants but once a few roots have penetrated the bottom, they should be moved off the tray and onto a slab. Easier and saner to just dunk the entire plant in solution if one isn't going to do all this required work. What the delta cube and slab buy you in a GH is propagation space and lack of needing a recirculating reservoir.
Can I ask what you mean by “clipping”? Also, this may be a complete oversight and should’ve been a question that I asked... I assumed that the system in the video was recirculating, are you telling me it’s drain to waste?
@@Hoocho using a string and clips for support. since the plant doesnt need a huge block at the base for support (its supported by the clips and string) whats the point? it seems an unnecessary expense
@@danroden830 the media is meant to give the roots the ideal balance of oxygen, water and nutrients throughout its structure (when properly managed). It also allows for more fine tune control of temperature (as its insulating) and lets you have wet -dry cycles as I think was mentioned above. A good base and anchor is important as well. DWC is fantastic, but it’s quite a different growing condition and comes with different challenges.
I didn’t notice how pollination is achieved. We’re the cucumbers self pollinating or a variety that does not require it? Also you now have me curious about cucamelon! Great video!
I'm not sure the injection I to the rock wool is necessary ,I would have allowed cycles of wicking from base by filling a base that has a small drop rate . That way you are wicking then drying out wool forcing air to fill the gaps then refilling with nutrient again. Some other ideas is driving air into the rock wool via some say 5 - 10 mm holes tapped into rockwool say via a core drill . These are just ideas 💡.
I wonder if you can air the rock wool around the sides with a black breathable material that allows roots to hit air much the grow bags that have aerated sides increasing root hair.

I grew my hydroponic cucumber with big mason jar. I don’t need any air bubbles or anything. It went well up until the entire plant got eaten by green caterpillar. 😂😂😂

Love the vids, can tell in this one you were watering way too much. Too much algae growth on top. I think the drippers that the facility were using let out less water than your ones. I have some similar to the ones they were using and they restrict the flow of the 3mm tubing quite alot, its not full flow like yours.

Plants grow roots sideways across topsoil, and only have some roots go down deep to tap for the water table. There's no cubes in nature. Your plant will grow as wide as the roots can grow. If you had a deep pot of roots, then each time you water you'll be making different moisture levels. Some roots will be perfect, others will drown, and others will starve for moisture. Keeping your soil flat and shallow and wide helps your plant drink faster and avoid root rot.

@@dodaexploda My reckoning was because the plant was in a high growth stage, had all of its resources tied up and had no margin for error.

Just buy a big sack of Cultilene brand mini rockwool cubes (10mm x 10mm x 10mm), they provide the ideal amount of air and moisture.

Not especially, as in the video just make sure you don’t overwater (with nutrient) as I did.
Rockwool is forgiving (my experience with starter cubes)

I preadjust my water to the correct end ph and add nutrient so it lands at whatever EC and PH I’m aiming for.

With regard to those cubes - far too dense for that type of delicate root network. Your earlier videos that taught me the efficiency of Perlite and vermiculite mix would achieve far greater success. More freedom for the root network, more oxygen free-flow, less water stagnation.
Basically, the simple growing medium using far less equipment to inject pulse and drain works with a suitable ratio. Yes, it is half Kratky and half NFT, but lid covered and suspended in a muslin bag means no algae!
yup cube is too dense that's why the roots are all on the outside.
I tend to agree with Hoocho -- cube seems waterlogged rather than too dense, so the roots are looking for oxygen. Out of curiosity Hoocho, what was your watering schedule/pulsing?
what purpose does the rockwool serve if you're clipping? arent the roots better off in the solution?
In his setup, none. Delta cubes and slabs are more suited to drain-waste systems. Moving the emitter to the slab allows the cube to become dry-space as the water table drops to the bottom of the slab, not the cube. A cube sitting on top of a non-similar surface will always cause it to retain a steep water profile regardless of water interval. This is fine for early plants but once a few roots have penetrated the bottom, they should be moved off the tray and onto a slab. Easier and saner to just dunk the entire plant in solution if one isn't going to do all this required work. What the delta cube and slab buy you in a GH is propagation space and lack of needing a recirculating reservoir.

@@Hoocho using a string and clips for support. since the plant doesnt need a huge block at the base for support (its supported by the clips and string) whats the point? it seems an unnecessary expense
@@danroden830 the media is meant to give the roots the ideal balance of oxygen, water and nutrients throughout its structure (when properly managed).
It also allows for more fine tune control of temperature (as its insulating) and lets you have wet -dry cycles as I think was mentioned above.
A good base and anchor is important as well.
DWC is fantastic, but it’s quite a different growing condition and comes with different challenges.
I didn’t notice how pollination is achieved. We’re the cucumbers self pollinating or a variety that does not require it? Also you now have me curious about cucamelon! Great video!

I'm not sure the injection I to the rock wool is necessary ,I would have allowed cycles of wicking from base by filling a base that has a small drop rate . That way you are wicking then drying out wool forcing air to fill the gaps then refilling with nutrient again. Some other ideas is driving air into the rock wool via some say 5 - 10 mm holes tapped into rockwool say via a core drill . These are just ideas 💡.
I wonder if you can air the rock wool around the sides with a black breathable material that allows roots to hit air much the grow bags that have aerated sides increasing root hair.
How do you stabilise ph in rockwool slab? It's looks like a mission impossible...All time it is too high. Any "secret sauce"?

Love the vids, can tell in this one you were watering way too much. Too much algae growth on top. I think the drippers that the facility were using let out less water than your ones. I have some similar to the ones they were using and they restrict the flow of the 3mm tubing quite alot, its not full flow like yours.

I am left with a doubt, how many times/crops can I reuse the same piece of rockwoll before changing it completely?
Plants grow roots sideways across topsoil, and only have some roots go down deep to tap for the water table. There's no cubes in nature. Your plant will grow as wide as the roots can grow. If you had a deep pot of roots, then each time you water you'll be making different moisture levels. Some roots will be perfect, others will drown, and others will starve for moisture. Keeping your soil flat and shallow and wide helps your plant drink faster and avoid root rot.
