after I do my squats and if I'm doing curls or overhead press I just keep my belt on because I'm too lazy to take it off and I don't want to have to keep an eye on it. it's not like i have a man servant to carry my shit for me
That man knows his stuff pretty well. An impressive info, very professionally delivered. This video is a true lesson which if people follow and try will see great results.
Very informative! Thanks for the tutorial, just what I needed. Esp. the different positioning of the belt for the deadlifts, squats, and power cleans. Intra abdominal pressure information was an added bonus!
I think your videos are great. Thanks for clueing me in as to why I need to invest in a powerlifting style belt! That said, I've seen several vids on knee wraps/ sleeves but would like to hear your thoughts on them in your "how-to" series.Your how to squat was hands down the best squat vid I've seen what with all the mis-informaton and bro-science that unfortunately gets freely handed around . You have inspired me to stay the course with my efforts to fix my mobility issues. Thanks and keep up the good work
I have only got into lifting weights for strength and health for the past 2 years rather than the previous half assed mixture of light bodybuilding, calisthenics or aesthetics type basic exercises I had been doing now and then. This required me to watch a lot of vids and although these have been a great help and no doubt avoid worse injuries than I have incurred, the 2 videos of yours that I have just watched have helped me identify at least 2 issues that I had not been made aware of from other vids. Maybe at my earlier lighter weights these issues were not making themselves known but they are now that 300+lbs lifts are here and the advice contained in your vids may just prove invaluable and enable me to move forward and avoid these issues, further mistakes, injury and enable more progress. Nice one! Thank you for that. For reference, it was the position of the squat bar on the back (I think I was doing a hybrid high and low bar) and the need to use a power lifting belt rather than a hybrid modern type sports shop leather training belt that I think I have. I will now watch more!
Thought I didnt have much more to learn about the belt but the fact about it being able to sit too tight on you was something I had not thought of before.. Superb vid as always!
Great video. I've tried to watch videos on correct bracing and breathing and this video covers it all much more clearly and succinctly - including how and when to wear a belt!
I see old guys at my gym (or some other guys that think they are so hardcore) that think they are doing everything correctly and judge you and try to correct you at every goddamn opportunity they have, wearing the belt every single day, and they don't even do any of the big threes, plus the belt is so tight it seems like they are suffocating, this gets to me because they walk around like they own the gym but they don't realize they are completes idiots!
Thanks for the great and direct info. I noticed the difference immediately. The entire duration of the lift felt solid and I feel I could lift heavier with proper breathing.
Just finally got my powerlifting belt broken in, wore it for the first time today, wore it too low, and now I have some MEAN bruises on my hip bones. Wish I had watched this vid sooner. Thanks for the tips, Alan.
Good video. Recently, I was given a leather weightlifting belt (used only a few times), not wider at the back, but uniform all the way around. I put it on and used it in a snatch exercise. USELESS, as you stated. I'll need to try it for back squats. Nice video. Thanks muchly!!!
been debating using a belt as of late. never had good experience with them and have just learned to breath into my abdomen during squats. I think I am going to get myself a belt now after watching this video. Thanks!
You should be a teacher Alan Thrall!! I love your videos and the detail you go into and how you are just helpful all around man. You helped me figure out that I should have been doing low bar squats the whole time and although I thought wearing a belt was simple and there as nothing to it, this video gave me some great insight!
I didn't realize I was breathing all wrong until recently. It's crazy what a difference it makes. I just bought a belt so I am very excited to try again with a belt.
GodOfTheInternets it is one of two things. 1) rapid explosive release of gas from the fluids in the joint (less likely as you typically can't do this over and over) 2) crepitus which is tendons, cartilage, and ligaments moving around and against each either.(more likely as this can happen repeatedly in quick succession) This is fine as long as there is no pain with it.
Good video for dummies! I would have liked a little more on different torso lengths and what might effect your belt position eg pelvis/hip and rips. How to find the right position and how do you know if you found it.
And most importantly, it prevents sore back. It has for me at least for the past 5 years....i used to have incredible lower back issues with squats and deadlifts...
Hey Alan. do you use wrist- wraps and if so could you make a video about those. I get any clear answers wether they are good or bad or how to use them.
currently needing to go to the hospital for not doing things correvtly during exercise. no matter ehat hesrtbresk you go through, know your limits and dont break your body
I use a classical bodybuilding belt for both squat and dead-lift, and that works just fine for me. I start using the belt from 70 kg squats and go up to 2 reps @ 200 kg. I start using the belt for 70 kg dead-lifts and go up to 1 rep @ 240 kg. I also use the belt for curls beginning with the 20 kg olympic class bar up to 70 or 80 kg, and for dumbbell twisting wrist curls and hammer curls from 10 kg dumbells up to 35 kg dumbells. The only bicep excercise I don't need the belt for is preacher curls. The belt doesn't give me any strength but protects my back, and without it I would have a very bad back.
+VoskiArdziv For heavy bench pressing a belt helps protect the lower back as well. I wear a belt for heavy overhead pressing, heavy bench pressing, heavy squats, and heavy deadlifts.
Bro i was using the regular cloth squat belt for heavy deadlifting. Sometimes my back hurts and sometimes it feels okay but definitely need a better belt. Thanks for this video
Thank you dude. I have been hitting weights almost a year and been nothing but gains with trial and error. Loving the journey. I have been hitting heavy for deadlift and window shopping for a belt. I have a question?! What width should the belt be? Thank you
another reason to minimize the usage of a powerlifting belt is to reduce your body and mind's dependence on the belt for staying tight throughout a lift; that is, you should be able to stay tight regardless of a belt
Now that you're onto Starting Strength what's your view on breathing with the belt. I believe Mark states that you SHOULD NOT extend the belly. Rather, tighten the belt so you can contract the abs and they still push against the belt. Have I got this right?
question, what the fudge should I do then when it comes to belts? sadly I got a short waist and hips (go figure, I'm a girl) and even with the old school belt, I have to adjust so it doesn't hit ribs or hips front and back. so if the big chunky one is the way to go... how the heck am I supposed to place the freaking thing?
I know this an old question, but look at a 3 or even 2 and 1/2 inch belt instead. They do make them in the power lifting leather style that narrow, I personally use a 3inch belt myself.
I use the velcro belt for squatting but it's because I'm a woman and I have a really short torso. When I wear the hard belts they dig into my ribs area it just uncomfortable.
Can I wear a belt for the curls if I do it in the squat rack?
Nope please dont do it,its helpless
after I do my squats and if I'm doing curls or overhead press I just keep my belt on because I'm too lazy to take it off and I don't want to have to keep an eye on it. it's not like i have a man servant to carry my shit for me
i laughed so hard and too fukin much xd
Fucking godly
John Martinez well it is ok to wear it during overhead press
The breathing technique is by far the best unique advice ever! Thank you.
Seriously how is this guy not more popular?
+pillsbury1thegamer he does not look like Hulk, and he doesn`t have magic supps
He doesn't post videos of him hitting PRs
+pillsbury1thegamer because we're all fatasses
+pillsbury1thegamer because people dont like being told the truth
They are intimidated by the beard.
Will the Powerlifting belt work for me if I don't have a beard ?
Chris Reinhardt no......
Chris Reinhardt not a chance
No...
no
That man knows his stuff pretty well. An impressive info, very professionally delivered.

As a complete beginner trying to build strength, this is a helpful explanation. I never knew!
i love wearing my belt while strolling on the treadmill drinking my latte
Always enjoy the fact that when I have a question your videos always have clear answers and explanations.
Very informative! Thanks for the tutorial, just what I needed. Esp. the different positioning of the belt for the deadlifts, squats, and power cleans. Intra abdominal pressure information was an added bonus!

Wearing a belt allows me to... TRAIN UNTAAAAAAAMED!
+MetalKing restraining yourself untames you?
people do tend to more creative when given rules, surprisingly!!

I wasn’t doing the breathing properly. Felt the difference instantly after applying it. Thank you so much!
Thought I didnt have much more to learn about the belt but the fact about it being able to sit too tight on you was something I had not thought of before.. Superb vid as always!
Dude! You forgot to remind us all to TRAIN UNTAMED!
Fuck now I'm gonna train tamed 🤦🏻♂️
So what your saying is don’t buy the body builder belt from Walmart for $10.99 cuase I’m on my way out the door
Great video. I've tried to watch videos on correct bracing and breathing and this video covers it all much more clearly and succinctly - including how and when to wear a belt!

Peanutbuttervibes i have back problems so i just need support. Am i better off using the velcro ones?
Grizzly Strength you are another 'keyboard doctor' that give free advice on TH-cam:)))
That's why the last time I trained in a public gym was around 1985.
Stop judging people at the gym and go there and get work done
They rarely do the big 3 at Westside Barbell (the “strongest gym in the world”), at least the competition versions anyway.
Damnit.. i just bought an old shool power lifting belt...
I did too...
It's not that bad though..
Me too
luishomeroremohsiul yeah it is lol sucks to suck
+Gains And Glory Nah, they're ok, unless you do some kind of super heavy lifting where yoru back hurts like hell , they're good to go.
You know I kept saying to myself, “this is a good video” over and over. Great job.
Thanks for all of your videos, Alan. They are very well done and informative.
Thanks for the great and direct info. I noticed the difference immediately. The entire duration of the lift felt solid and I feel I could lift heavier with proper breathing.

Great video 10/10 would watch again
been debating using a belt as of late. never had good experience with them and have just learned to breath into my abdomen during squats. I think I am going to get myself a belt now after watching this video. Thanks!
Brian Davis I recently started using one and they make a big difference, you feel so much stronger in the core.
Thank you, very informative and practicals/visual cues are appreciated
Damn lol. Just blew $25 on the "bodybuilder" useless belt.
Joseph Huggins It's working fine for now, but I'm still a weak mofo so I guess i'll see how things progress.
It might be better for deadlifts. Powerlifting thick belts hit you ribs if you are not tall enough. Also oly lifter also use the bodybuilding belt.
Toopkarcher u still weak?
Lol
@@toopkarcher4941 how's the progress
Alan, you are the best, I have been learning a lot from all your videos!
Nice video. For the breathing part, i like to imagine my core is a cylinder that expands from all sides as I breathe in , and begin to squat
Really informative video man.. but next time can you make a video on how to grow a beard from the gods?
5:04 That's not a dumbbell curl. Flagged for unappropriate material.
+Postermaestro LOL
Unappropriate ?
And all my life I thought it was Inappropriate
We learn something ever day.
@@pastlink98 ever day? Yeah
That was really clear and understanding, thanks bro 🙌🏾

2:22 its could be obviously seen at Olympic weightlifting legend Naim Suleymanoğlu's lifts during competitions.
I didn't realize I was breathing all wrong until recently. It's crazy what a difference it makes. I just bought a belt so I am very excited to try again with a belt.
2:40 *click* *click* *click* If your knees click during a squat is that bad?
From what I know its the release of fluid in the joints and its safe and normal.
Thomas Hemming Larsen I thought it was gasses....
Best tutorial on how to go about the belt! Thanks man!
Awesome as usual. I've been using mine for strict OHP to avoid hyper extending. Thought it was just me!
Alan, you're gifted and extremely informative. You cover everything I wonder about.
Very nice choice of background music. Well played.
Thank you very much for the video and information. I learned the hard way what overtightened belts can do, and it wasn't fun.
Great video and great information!
Brother I love your vids! Keep em coming, I'm like a sponge.
you should probably grow up then
Man it’s been six years since this vid was uploaded:(
Where the heck was I looking, I missed all this great info 💪🏽
Good video for dummies! I would have liked a little more on different torso lengths and what might effect your belt position eg pelvis/hip and rips. How to find the right position and how do you know if you found it.
This was insanely helpful - thank you for this content! 🤜🤛
Thank you from a beginner lifter.
Subscribed.

Fantastic video 👍😎
In addition to body building I also do freediving, so when I heard you say valsalva maneuver I was like heyyyy I know that one
:D I was having trouble with positioning of the belt but now that's solved! Thanks! :D

For those wondering, how much extra a belt will add to your lifts, it depends on the belt, a good belt will add 10% more to your lifts
I searched, found and learned. Thanks oncemore!
belts are like wrist wraps for your core. you could do without them but it helps to use them.,
Shout out to the Dutch Strong shirt! Hello from Lancaster, PA!!!
Great video. But how am I going to remember to train untamed without a verbal reminder at the end?
Would it be wise for one to wear a powerlifting belt for ATG squats?
Damn, I had it on my head, I might change that now..
Alan your THE MAN! Great content as always 👍🏽 I took away great information
Thank you dude. I have been hitting weights almost a year and been nothing but gains with trial and error. Loving the journey. I have been hitting heavy for deadlift and window shopping for a belt. I have a question?! What width should the belt be? Thank you
Was that a shirt from a lifting comp in Lancaster????
ur videos are very useful and to the point...thanks man

As a newbie. Thank you for the advice!

Do you think that the intro abdominal pressure that you use for heavy lifts increases risk of hernia?
glad i bought an oldschool lifting belt the day before watching this video

GREAT VIDEO & TIPS....! THANKS
Another triumph.
I'll never wear my belt around my head and puff my cheeks like a blowfish again.
Great vid, man
My gym has only those body builder belts. Are theye better than no belt at all?
Let me get this straight. When breathing for squats. You breathe in, then do you hold it on the way down and breathe out as you come up?
This video is amazing how are you not at 1mil? you are very educated and enjoyable to watch
exactly the info I was looking for, great, thanks!
Didn't mention hernias prevention once, which one of the biggest safety features of the belt.
Well thats simple and all makes sense! Great video 👍
Could you still use a belt with a diastasis recti? An could use a belt for body squats?
This video is very useful. Thank you.
What belt was he using ? Can someone send me the link ? Please .
Is the schiek lever belt ay good?
Ik that it was mentioned in one of his videos before, but can someone help me remember the website he said to go to when trying to find lifting meets?
Thank you for the information. Extremely helpful!!
Bloody awesome vid mate. Great knowledge and explanation.
Video on point as usual, great job!
