Got into this band after hearing "Rainmaker." Saw them in Sachsenhausen in '98 at a tiny bar. Helped 'em carry some of their gear in and hung out a little, took some pics. Maybe 50 people in there tops, sat at the bar about 10 feet from the stage. Really nice guys and tight as hell live. Great band!
I'm a new discoverer of this band, and the thing that stands out above all else for me is their melodic sense. Seriously great hooks. Sort of reminds me of a heavier, prog version of Journey, melodically. In fact, a little more prog wouldn't hurt my feelings at all with these guys. Granted, I'm relatively new and haven't went through the catalogue yet. So far they aren't as heavy as I anticipated based on others' recommendations. Very impressed by this band, though.
When a life falls into dust and the paradise is lost There is something to remind us in our head There is something to remember, helping us to understand And the price we have to pay for a life we fade away These are the words I hear somebody say Is there anybody else? Can find the end of days Is there anybody else? Is there anybody else? Can find the end of days Is there anybody else? The end of all days The end of all days On some ordinary day in the end of 1963 While a distant tune of spring lies in the air, we are waiting for the fall of lives and years And the price we have to pay for a life we fade away These are the words I hear somebody say Is there anybody else? Can find the end of days Is there anybody else? Martha's Vineyard near the bay Here we found another trace Nothing’s planned but just a curse or a spell on Mother Earth This line is defeated before we release it When we see the command forces die and the echo of the laughter is not so far away to ignore the cries On this ordinary day, JFK has gone And witnessed by a hundred million eyes who saw him fall, asking why his mantra was a paragram of KEN I DIE And the price we have to pay for a life fading away Is there anybody else? Can find the end of days Is there anybody else? We are the reason for We are the fallen children The end of all days We are the reason for We are the fallen children The end of all days
you´re the man :D i´m a Dream Theater fan, and i really enjoyed Riverside´s music as well as i do enjoy Vanden Plas´ music, which i just discovered yesterday :D (bought 3 albums right away :D) Prog Rock ftw !
@juanbestu Recomendations okay. Seventh Wonder, Andromeda, Anubis Gate, Circus Maximus, Ark, Adagio, Ride the Sky, Silent Call, Edenbridge, Anthriel, While Heaven Wept, Opeth, Wolverine, Redemption, Venturia, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Dream Theater. Also there is an internet Radio station devoted to playing prog rock and prog metal, that is called "Progulus" that is a good way to learn of new bands.
Add this, and Pagan's Mind to the list ladies and gentlemen. Throw a little Scar Symmetry (Christian Alvestam days imo), Soilwork, Mind's Eye, Pyramaze, and many more that other's can add to spice things up.
Guys, listen to Riverside (as mentioned bellow), Mind Key, Animations (new band from Poland - search for Animations - Demons Of War here)., and Spheric Universe Experience from France. I can bet you'll like them !
@ianmackenziedavis - Can't replace the bands from the 70's, or the 80's, but the fact that bands this good, this young exist is pretty damn good, considering how popular crap like Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber are.
@ianmackenziedavis While I humbly disagree about who is better, might I suggest their AcCult album, if you've not already given it a listen to. It might be even more to your liking.
@Gharper8619 Technically metal is rock, but I see what you're saying, but I have to disagree. I think the guitars in Vanden Plas are usually distorted and lower, thus making them heavier, as metal is.
Already 15 years...they sounded amazing!!!! Such a quality album.
It feels like a privilege to be in the position of finding out of this band. Amazing songs.
An incredible and enlightening journey awaits for all who listen to Vanden Plas. I'm beginning this journey for myself, and loving every minute of it.
These guys are just awesome! Been a fan for about a year. Come to California guys.

The tiny bar in Sachsenhausen is called "Spritzehaus". I saw them at this Location on October 2 in 2007.
Such Power and grace this give me endless goosebumps!!!!!!!
How come I didn't heard this band before!!!

I usually range from neutrality down to huge distaste for this genre.
But my god, I LOVE the tracks from Vanden Plas - especially Fireroses Dance.

And I would add Blotted science, thought chamber and Spastic Ink, maybe Outworld to that great list.
@katrinaylonen what about Opeth, and Devin Townsend?

Why are you missing Pagan's Mind?
