Enjoyed the deep dive into a group that most people only think of one album. I liked seeing the early stuff that you have Shawn. Nice job.

Hey Steve. Cool. That’s what I was thinking. These albums were big for me as a young teenager and I wanted to share some of the bands more obscure moments. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for watching. Shawn

Shawn, good information. I have the Babes in Arms, but need to look into Breakout '66, but luckily they have it on TH-cam. Thanks, Chris

@@christopherkibler511 I think you’ll really enjoy 66 Breakout. They were really just getting started but the fire is there right from the beginning. Together with Babes in Arms, I think they are essential if we are going to really understand the development of the 5. Thanks for watching! Shawn

I always felt 'Gold' was full of danger. I first heard it in an old Edinburgh nightclub/bar, I was underage. Blew my mind at that volume.

Yes. Gold is full of foreboding. Maybe because it’s the very last track they ever recorded as the MC5. It’s a great song and the band left us with this final piece of music. In the late seventies Rob Tyner cut a great song with the Hot Rods from the UK. It has some of that MC5. Sadly, Rod died of a heart attack shortly afterwords. I’ll put a link in case you’re not familiar. One last point. I actually saw Rod Tyner on stage when I was 18/19 years old. He performed with a band called Guitar Army. And they did Kick Out the Jam. Afterwords, Rod just walked though the audience and I don’t think anyone even knew who he was. My friends and I spoke to him briefly and shook his hand. That was in 1988/89.

That’s great Peter. I think you’ll be happy with both of these records and they can open up another area of collecting MC5 records. There are also other live recordings that have Additional songs that you likely have never heard before. It’s fun to find these missing tracks from the history of the band. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Shawn

I got burned years ago picking up the gold label. Luckily, it was before prices became ridiculous so I didn’t spend too much. Great band.

Interesting. I’ve heard most are the uncensored versions. But what you said proves the point that you never really know unless you hear it for yourself. Amazing band and lots of great music to explore. Along with their “little brother band” the Stooges. Thanks for watching. Shawn

Loving these Detroit based band videos you've been doing. I know very little about most of them other than what the "public" knows and it's always nice to see someone passionate about the music they're into, even when my passion doesn't match for the same music (yet).

I appreciate that very much. My taste for avant-garde music actually began with the MC5. On their first album, Kick Out the Jams, the band does a cover of a Sun Ra track that got me curious as a teenager who this Sun Ra was. So began an interest in jazz and more adventurous music. The bands manager was poet John Sinclair who educated these band about free jazz, poetry and radical left-wing politics. So in a strange way, this garage rock helped me find some amazing music. I'll always have a deep love for the MC5 or the Stooges or Roky Erickson because that was the music of those my rebellious teenage years. But, in truth, I've move beyond them too. Finding Moondog, William Basinski, techno and electronic music along the way. Thanks for watch! Shawn

@@the-vinyl-dreamscape5084 Yeah I totally get that, you can move on from bands while still holding them in a special place where you occasionally, or often for that matter, can come back to. Steve Carlson made a pretty interesting video about personal gateway artists/bands into genres. I've thought about doing something like that but so much of the music I listen to these days is sort of genre defying and not limited to just one genre, so it's a bit tricky.

Excellent job Shawn. We really do not get a look at one of the coolest and heaviest bands to come out Michigan. You knocked it out. I really liked seeing the singles. I never see the original singles in and around the Boston area. Well done S~

@@Paneeks1960 I appreciate that. Those singles are nice to have and they sound great. I think they are a vital piece of the band’s history and musical legacy. They show a rawer version of the band before they discovered their true identity. Cheers. Shawn

@@corporalcornealiaspheffer8296 Wayne was born to be a rock star. A natural talent and showman, he always gave everything to the performance. Mostly I’m glad he had the opportunity to tour several years with the MC50 tribute show. He had some of the very best musicians working with him. They even released an album. Thanks for watching, my brother ✊

I've been reading the Radio Birdman biography and it's been interesting to see how Deniz Tek growing up close to the source in Detroit had a huge influence on the local Sydney pre-punk scene when he moved to Sydney to study medicine before he formed Birdman. The local scene had those Stooges & MC5 records, but Deniz came along and he actually knew those blokes. It was also amazing to me how many Aus music fans back in the early 70's were switched on to & managed to track down MC5, Stooges, VU, NY Dolls, Modern Lovers & The Nuggets comp in those days. It would've been close to impossible to find those records back then. I saw the remaining 3 play with Deniz Tek in Fred's place and a trio of singers including Mark Arm, Tex Perkins & Evan Dando on the Fred songs. It was a killer line up and the only disappointing thing was Wayne didn't do the wild high voice for Rambling Rose. Back In The USA is probably my favourite despite the sound. I'm not sure I would like it any other way because I've become so used to that razor sharp sound. I saw a really good doco about the MC5 which featured current at the time interviews with Wayne Kramer, Dennis Thompson & Michael Davis plus archival stuff with Fred & Rob. It was really good and covered a lot of the early pre-revolutionary 5, but for some reason Wayne Kramer blocked any further release or screenings. I managed to find a bootleg DVD but halfway through the sound goes out of sync with the picture. Breakout 66 is killer. I have some weird boot that is them doing Kick Out The Jams live in the Studio which has pretty decent sound & I think it was recorded just after High Time. They do good versions but one thing I didn't expect was what a difference it made to hear the crowd like on the original album. Cool stuff as usual mate. Cheers...Ben

@@benrankins4446 Hey Ben. Thanks for the really great comment. Seeing Deniz Tek with 3 members of the Five seems like a dream come true. I can’t tell you how revered Tek is among Detroit music fans. And the entire scene around his move to Sydney. Strange how things work that way. Seeing all of them on stage together is like the holy grail garage rock. Interesting what you say about Wayne blocking the documentary. I know there was a lot of bad blood over the years. Although, it does seem that they eventually got over the hard feelings. Which is great. There were several attempts made to get the MC5 back together. The first being Rob Tyner in the late seventies. The “New MC5" eventually just became the Rob Tyner Band since Rob was the only member at that time willing to play their music. There’s a pretty cool 7’ of Rob Tyner with the Hot Rods (from the UK). Called Till the Night Is Gone (Let's Rock). It’s no big revaluation but it’s good to hear Tyner singing so well. There was the recently released MC5 album that only Wayne Kramer plays on. But sadly, it doesn’t live up to the legend. Not even close. Be well, my friend. Cheers! Shawn

@@the-vinyl-dreamscape5084 They were damn good too. Evan Dando was unexpectedly the best out of the guest vox. His lazy drawl was perfect for the Fred songs he did. Shakin' Street was sublime. Having said that Tex owned the stage as Tex does. It's very strange that Wayne blocked the doco because from what I know, he had a big hand in getting it made in the first place. Yeah I had a listen to that new MC5 & it doesn't have that distinct sound. You could hardly expect it when it's only got one original member. Cheers...Ben

    Questions
Was MC5 the first band who started with a live album?
Where can buy MC5 from 1966?
Which Mudhoney shall I start with?

@@hanselmerson3366 I don’t know if they were the first band to release a live album as the first. It’s certainly an interesting idea. You’ll have to search online for copies of the 66 Breakout album; eBay? Or discog? A local shop? Which Mudhoney to start with? Hmmmm I think the first EP is great. But sample a few of the early albums on TH-cam. I’m sure that will point you in the right direction. Cheers!
