It’s time to start going through Quentin Tarantino films properly. This was a fascinating look at a crime gone wrong and it was an amazing experience! Although, I’m not sure if I can forgive Quentin for making me have so much fun during THAT scene. I hope you enjoyed my Reservoir Dogs movie reaction & commentary

So excited to start making my way through Quentin Tarantino's filmography. What are YOUR thoughts on Reservoir Dogs?
I think everyone gives an amazing performance, and the jumping around in time really tosses the viewer right into the action and lets them piece everything together as they go along.
Don’t forget true romance. Easy to sleep on cause it was written and not directed by Tarantino - but it’s an awesome movie
This script is why Quentin is one of my favorite filmmakers, second only to Kevin Smith. Quentin also wrote screenplays for 2 other films, True Romance and Natural Born Killers. Both films aren’t directed by Tarantino, but are still worth watching.
It's awesome. I own it on laserdisc.
Saw it after catching Pulp Fiction when it came out in theaters. I was personally disappointed with it. I'm more of a realist & Keitel's character, being a seasoned pro,never would've done what he did in real life. It's great if you're watching Tarantino in order, friend. Best way to appreciate them. I then caught his next flick after Pulp Fiction, " Jackie Brown" & is my all-time fave of his. I lost interest in Tarantino after Grindhouse. Waste of talent to me but I'm in the minority & all must-sees. Don't forget "Four Rooms"! Tarantino only did one "room" but is a must see comedy starring Tim Roth & Bruce Willis among others.

I always find it fascinating and inspiring that a director who often features so many colorful, complicated, unique locations in his movies, got his big start with a movie that takes place almost entirely in a dingy, bland, nondescript warehouse. :)
It's looks more like a theatre show than a movie to me. Some kind of modern warped Greek tragedy.
Nearly one location. Minimal props. Gore stuff happens off screen. He probably saved so much money with all that. OR it all went to securing the fantastic cast. Either way, I'm still impressed.

Vic and Vincent are brothers and all Tarantino movies take place in a shared universe.
QT also wrote, but did not direct, "True Romance" and it shows. A great film with tons of great stars, directed by Tony Scott. A must watch for a QT fan.

I definitely wouldn't call this a comedy, but Tarantino is good at writing in funny moments that break up the tension. Even here in one of his earliest scripts, he masterfully weaves in humorous situations and comments in order to keep things from being too bleak. That balance of tension and comedy is something he continues to exploit going forward, and one of the big reasons why so many people (including myself) love his writing.
You are spot on about Tarantino's enthusiasm. He LOVES what he does, and he only does what he loves. He doesn't sell out, he doesn't compromise, he only makes what's in his head. His movies ALWAYS have a top notch soundtrack, you're gonna love his musical style.
and Mr Pink is the most level headed and logical one here, and he's right about tipping. It's F'd up waitresses are forced to rely on the generosity of their patrons, as well as being F'd up patrons are forced to makeup for what the employer should be paying their staff.
Pink gets taken alive. If you turn the sound up enough and your speakers are good enough, you can hear him surrender.
QT is definitely one of the kings of dialogue. Also the cop torture scene has imbedded the 'Clowns to the left of me' song in my brain and I can't hear it without thinking of this scene.
The woman who shoots Tim Roth and was then killed was his dialogue coach. He insisted on it cos she worked him hard, apparently.
To fully explore Tarantino, you also need to do the 3 scripts he wrote but didn't direct - True Romance, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Natural Born Killers - his segment in Four Rooms, and Sin City (where he guest directs a scene for buddy Robert Rodriguez).

I would also add "Killing Zoe", a film directed by Roger Avary, a long-time friend of QT and co-writer of the Pulp Fiction screenplay

If you want to go even further you can also go with movies that were an inspiration for Tarantino. Ringo Lam's City on Fire (1987) for this.

The breakfast table scene is one of my favorites, and was the first example of Tarantino’s mastery of mundane yet riveting conversation as a means of introducing his characters. 😎👍
Michael Madsen dancing around to Stealer's Wheel while he tortures the cop is so iconic and has been parodied and homaged so many times. The gas can was even the DVD case for an anniversary edition, with a matchbook dvd sleeve inside.
I always like to think that Mr. Pink was in hiding and started working as a waiter at a restaurant in Jack Rabbit Slim's in order to make ends meet while laying low. 😉
I like to think he slipped some cop a few diamonds to let him get away, and the "shootout" was just to make it sound good. Not only does he live, but he learns a valuable lesson about the power of generosity.
That's my theory too! And he's so mad when serving Mia and Vincent cos he never gets tipped.

Jackie Brown exists in such a unique space in QT's filmography as his only adapted script.
No one ever reacts to Out of Sight, because it's not QT, but it's a sister movie to Jackie Brown. It's a really good movie, and better than even Jackie Brown, IMO.

harvey keitel was the actor who gave tarantino his break. AKA keitel got a hold of tarantinos script & bankrolled it & produced it & made tarantino.

One thing that I find fascinating - and it's been a while since I've seen the movie in full, so correct me if I'm wrong - for a movie all about a robbery, we never see the robbery itself. We only see the lead up to it and the aftermath... and yet it doesn't feel like the movie is missing anything. That's brilliant writing.
I’m kind of Stuck in the middle of the movie with that scene thanks to that song. Oh boy. And you’re right. We don’t see the robbery. We see breakfast and we see running from the police, but that’s it. The rest is just dialogue and story- but nothings missing.
So I've been thinking about this for quite a while today... this film is about a robbery without showing the robbery, and Pulp Fiction (in many parts) is about what's in that suitcase without ever showing it. In both cases, the stolen diamonds and glowing whatever are in themselves irrelevant. The "MacGuffin." But what sets Tarantino apart is his refusal to show the MacGuffin, where other (less bold) filmmakers would. He's highlighting how much that 'thing' doesn't matter in comparison to the relationship-based and/or emotional story he's telling... Does that make sense? What do you think?

The video game shows more of the robbery and the escapes. It’s good story-companion material if you’re a fan of this movie.
One of the movies that inspired this movie is “The Killing”, starring Sterling Hayden. Black and white, 1956. It’s an interesting watch after seeing this movie.

Their meet-up spot is an abandoned mortuary. There is a hearse and coffins that can be seen throughout the big main room. All just teasing that they're essentially at their own funeral.

Fun Fact: Quentin Tarantino said he was proud the movie is often on top ten heist movies, even though you never actually see the heist.
Medical Fact: During filming, a paramedic was kept on the set to make sure that Mr. Orange's (Tim Roth) amount of blood loss was kept consistent and realistic to that of a real gunshot victim.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Madonna, who is the main topic of the opening conversation, really liked the film, but refuted Quentin Tarantino's Like A Virgin (1992) interpretation. She gave him a copy of her Erotica (1992) album, signed: "To Quentin. It's not about dick, it's about love. Madonna."
Pacifist Panic Fact: Michael Madsen had difficulty filming the torture scenes, due to his strong aversion to violence of any kind, and was particularly reluctant when he was required to hit Kirk Baltz. When Baltz ad-libbed a line that his character has a child at home, Madsen, who had just become a new father himself, was so disturbed by the idea of leaving a child fatherless that he almost couldn't finish the scene.
Every time you hear the song Stuck In The Middle, you will remember the ear scene of this fantastic movie.
QT is a master of story telling and dialogue.
I envy you being able to watch this movie for the first time! I remember well how surprising and fresh it felt at the time. There was nothing else like this being done (at least that we could go see in the theater).
Yeah, Mr Pink is dead, you can hear the cops yelling at him and then the gunshots start, and when they stopped, it's because he was down. My friends and I have a (definitely not true) theory that Mr Pink did get away with the diamonds and the diamonds are in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction and Mr Pink is in hiding as a waiter at Jack Rabbit Slim's as a Buddy Holly impersonator. Fun Fact: This movie had a budget of $100,000.
The lady in the car Mr. Pink jacked is the same lady Marsalis Wallace shot in Pulp Fiction.
Tarantino films have great OST's but my favorite by far is Kill Bill pt 1
Glad you reacted to this one. It's one of my favorites. A lot of people ignore it and just watch Pulp Fiction and a couple others that are more well-known.

Tarantino was one of 4 Directors to work on a movie called 4 ROOMS. The main character(Tim Roth) is also the main character in 4 ROOMS and he ties all the scenes together.
Selma Hayek, Bruce Willis, Antonio Banderas, Madonna... SOOOO many more. It's amazing, and no one knows of it.

I love how we never actually see the robbery, but still feel like we saw it because of how it was described by the characters and all the scenes of the planning and the aftermath.

In Mr. White's story he talks about working wih a young womamn named Alabama, The lead female character in "True Romance" is named Alabama, Quentin was working on both scripts at the same time, so this seeems likely to be a case of his movies occurring in the same Tarantinoverse

The radio dj is longtime legend of standup comedy, Steven Wright.
From what I heard and read about this movie, Mr. Pink wasn't killed. Nor did he get away. I never verified ths myself, but the dialogue outside seems to sound akin to someone shouting ''Cuff him!'' I looked at the video file just now, even with maxed out volume, I can't hear the words clear enough. I'm not sure if Quentin himself has commented officially or not. He did remark about the briefcase from PF meant to just be a red herring, IIRC.
There Will Be Blood is AWESOME. Very strange movie but pretty great.

I always thought there was no reason for Mr Orange to break cover. That he would have survived if he'd just kept his mouth shut for 30 more seconds. That's my only frustration with what I otherwise consider a great masterpiece.

Two theories about the title: QT said two of his favourite films are "Au Revoir Les Enfants", which he called the reservoir movie, and Straw Dogs. Then, another word for reservoir? Dam. Definition of dogs? Sons of b*tches. Put it together, and what do you get?
I believe Mr. Pink bit the dust. It makes the most sense, it's the most hilariously symmetrical (they all die), and I don't hear any car peeling out and roaring away. I saw "Reservoir Dogs" the week it came out, it blew everybody's minds, definitely "there's a new kid on the block" feeling. I cannot wait to see your reaction to "Jackie Brown", my favorite of all his films. And "There Will Be Blood"!!!!!! One of my absolute top favorites of the century! You enjoyed the HECK out of "Reservoir Dogs" and it was palpable! I felt the same way, I remember sitting in that theatre going "damn good movie! I'm having a damn good time watching the heck out of this movie!" :D I remember I couldn't wait to see it again. Harvey Keitel had another great movie that came out the same week, "Bad Lieutenant", it was like a comeback for Harvey, I saw both the same week, same theatre. You should watch Rashomon. It’s a Japanese movie. It’s so great.
The one cop that Pink did not kill was the only one we know did not die. Also the woman Pink snatched out of the car. So two did not die.
Hong Kong movie "City on Fire", starring Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee, who would later team up again in John Woo's masterpiece "The Killer", is, in many ways, almost identical in plot terms to Reservoir Dogs.

Female Scorpion Prisoner Franchise is one his biggest influences The fast zooms in, the gore splatter, the fight/action scenes. He even casted and shot the lead from this franchise for his Kill Bill movie, but they became deleted scenes.
Vic & Vince Vega are brothers. Quinton has talk about doing a prequel that has them both together but seeing how old everybody is now it’s not likely to happen.
This soundtrack is iconic.
I enjoyed this movie overall. Great cast. I was surprised that they all died at the end though. Looking forward to more Tarantino.

Except Mr Pink
Tarantino is a master with dialogue. And there are a number of tells that seem to distiguish every movie. You'll hear a lot of them like his fetish for feet and his obsession for graphic violence. But the one constant I've noticed in almost all of his movies is his obsession to not only portray cold blooded murder but also to justify it. And in this movie it occurs when the undercover cop (Mr. Orange) shoots the woman in the car who was merely trying to defend herself.
Did you notice that Tim Roth (Mr Orange), Steve Buscemi (Mr Pink) and Harvey Keitel (Mr White) were also in PULP FICTION. And although Michael Madsen (Mr. Blond) was not in that film he will show up in three other Tarantino movies. He is one of several actors that Tarantino seems to go to when he is casting a new movie. TRUE ROMANCE would be a good choice for your next reaction in this category. I think you will be blown away by the cast when you do.
Good call. Watch them all. And buy the soundtracks, they all rock. He wrote a few movies that he didn't direct that are good too, like True Romance for example.

During the torture scene I was wondering whether the dancing in Kung Fu Hustle was a reference to the reservoir dogs?

Yeah this was my thought when my girlfriend and I watched this in the theatre in 1992 (and being on the edge of our seats the entire movie).
Now... If you crank the volume during that scene of the cops outside, you can hear Mr. Pink yell out "DON'T SHOOT; I'VE BEEN SHOT!"
So- Pink "probably" survived and was arrested. But I still hang on the notion that they all died in the end. To me that's Tarantino in a nutshell.

Actually, if you listen closely, before the cops come in and kill Mr. White, you can actually hear Mr. Pink's altercation with the cops, and no, he doesn't get killed
You can hear him trying to start a car, like you can hear him trying to crank it up, and then he police arrive as he's attempting to leave, and he gets into a shootout with them, and you can actually hear Mr. Pink's voice, and he says "Don't shoot, I've been shot goddamnit!", and he gets arrested before the police barge into the warehouse. Now yes its possible the cops shot Pink anyway, but given that we can actually hear the interaction outside the warehouse, I'm pretty sure he got arrested, and since he was the most professional/smartest of the crooks, he deserves to have only gotten arrested, he was too smart for that group
Now, there is also a theory, one in which I firmly believe, is that Mr. Pink eventually gets released from prison or is out on parole, and becomes the Buddy Holly Waiter from Pulp Fiction, idk if you remember but in Pulp Fiction when Vincent & Mia go to the Jack Rabbit Slims restaurant, their waiter is a Buddy Holly impersonator who is played by Steve Buscemi, the same actor for Pink. I love to think that after prison and having a record, Mr. Pink could only get a waiting job, that runs off of tips to get by, and Vincent says "I don't think Buddy Holly's much of a waiter", and clearly he was very monotone and dispassionate about his job which just fuels the theory, and given him not being a very good waiter, he may not receive many tips
Subtle hint about the ending, the dynamic they present about the tips in the opening scene. Mr. Pink was only one who was didn't want to tip whilst everyone else pretty much threw in immediately. Despite tipping in away, Mr. Pink would be the only survivor, although he gets wounded and arrested. The story presents Pink like he is a total asshole and 100% would have been the logical option to be the rat, however, he was the only smart one in the group. He followed the rules Joe gave, he didn't pick sides other than his own.
Joe and Eddie trusted Blonde too much and looked past his psychotic tendencies.
White trusted Orange too much even though Orange would be the rat.
Brown and Blue were the only exceptions as they were very, very minor characters.
I think "No more Mister Niceguy" is from "True Romance"
You should watch it too, very good movie.
I will definitely circle back to Tarantino written films once I've watched his directed films.

Planning on it! But I’d like to watch his directed films first.
Watched this in a small "cinema" on release, no mainstream cinemas were showing it at the time here in Britain, at least none that i, or any of my mates knew about. Can't remember how one of my friends found out about it, but, wow, what an experience it was. Pulp Fiction was a ride too, but, in my opinion; this is a better movie for its simplicity. I won't comment on Tarantino's later films, because, again in my opinion, like a lot of directors, he got a bit "up his own arse".
I saw it in a UCI. One of my proudest moments ever as an actor. I was 17. Convinced the bus driver I was 15 for a half-price ticket, then convinced the box office staff I was 18 to get in.
P.S. Tarantino's 8th movie, The Hateful Eight, is in part inspired by this his very first film.
The Vegas are brothers - there was speculation on a Tarantino film featuring both but so far nada.
Jackie Brown is my favorite QT film
There is a fan theory that Mr. Pink survived and got away. He ended up being Donny in "The Big Lebowski". The fact that he wore different bowling shirts with different names on them was the clue.
A reservoir dog is a rat. It's a slang term for one who snitches to the police, or is an undercover police officer themselves. Origin comes from the great size of rats living in and around reservoirs.
Every budding director would be happy starting out with a movie only a fraction as good as this one.

I think that you should watch True Romance as well. Even if QT didn't direct it, it has his stamp all over it. By rights it should be the 2nd film you watch. I don't know if you recognized QT as one of the Dogs. Also you should know that QT has a bit of a foot fetish and you will often find him focusing on a woman's naked foot. Also, also the DJ on the radio station is Steven Wright, a legendary stand-up comedian.
I think you'll really enjoy Jackie Brown.
