    I've been thinking of getting an airbrush and the beginner kit you linked is the exact kit I was looking at to start with. I guess it's a good choice for knowing nothing about airbrushes and picking it because it's a good deal.

    Interested in learning airbrush. Your video has me moving into the challenge with more confidence than before. At 62 and extremely old school. Building high end custom fishing rods/tackle. Changes can be quite a fear factor. From the very beginning my world has been basic aerosol hobby paints. I'm convinced airbrush is going to allow me the detailing techniques I've been in search of. If nothing else mabe just getting a break from the obnoxious marble in each can as well as the ridiculously expensive camel hair brush

    Hey Bill,
    Great video!
    You may want to note that using an ultrasonic cleaner on aluminum may cause pitting just encase your airbrush has aluminum parts.
    I learned this the hard way!

    How do you quickly change colors when airbrushing? Do you just have multiple air brushes or can you just swap the little paint thing over?

    • @seanblah12
      @seanblah12 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quickest way is multiple airbrushes. Otherwise you'd have to empty out and clean it between colours.

    I purchased a dual-action "Central Pneumatic," dual action airbrush from Harbor Freight Tools for about $24. I also purchased a small "Tool Shop" compressor from Menards for about $45 so my total outlay is under $100. I don't want to buy an Iwata, Paasche, or Sata Airbrush until I get the hang of things. I am excited. Thank you for your fine video. Is some of your work from LOTR?? I am looking more for automotive applications.

    Water isn't the greatest thinner for airbrushing, Windex is a good around cheap acrylic thinner but best practice is when the maker of a paint has a thinner for that paint use it and beware that Brand A paint my not always be thinned with Brand B thinner always test out of the brush first on something nonporous like a paint pallet so you can see how the paint is reacting to the thinner. Even "Pre-thinned/ ready to airbrush" paints will sometimes need to be thinned as well as the thinner will evaporate over time.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can! Just make sure you rinse it out immediately after use. You may have to water it down too much to get it through a normal airbrush - a Critter Sprayer usually works the best.

    I noticed that your airbrush compressor is a tankless version. Everywhere I read, they always recommend getting a tank. Hi.Thank you for this video. Can you please tell me how long can you paint with a starter kit? does it depend on the size of the compressor or..? i read somewhere that you can only paint for max 20 mins and then you need to rebuild the pressure for 2 hours.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does depend on the compressor - it also depends on how much continuous painting you plan to do. Smaller surface areas and short breaks can extend the painting time

    its better to thin paint with proper thinner, i had issues with thinning it with water, paints dryed inside airbrush while painting. and for example tamya thinner extends a bit drying time of the paint. right thinner was gamechanger to me.

    One question is about airbrushing lacquer that you mentioned. It’s a broad question; how the heck did you do it? I’ve been told it’s fairly impossible as lacquer is too thick. Is there a special lacquer that’s moderately hard wearing?

    Question here: I have the same airbrush as seen at 1:34 in the video. I clean it and I use enough thinner with my paint but still it gets blocked. It's not due to paint that's clogging, it's more like the push button for the airflow. Anyone else has this problem? If I leave it for a half hour it seems to work again. maybe the piston?

  • @87manbeast
    @87manbeast 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a little tid bit. You really don't want to put the body of your airbrush body in that ultrasonic cleaner as it can cause damage over time to your mechanism for the air control parts when liquids and solvents get in there. As well as you want to remove all o-rings when cleaning with solvents as they can be eaten a way at by the solvents and will make your gun useless if you don't have backups when you go to paint. Just an fyi. Great video and good info..

My air compressor like the cheap on but with a small tank attached gets boiling hot after 20-30 minutes, is this normal and am I safe to keep using. I’d hate to ruin it. If I should invest in a better compressor for large areas and leave the other for small/details what recommendations do u have. Litres of tank ect. Thanks!

      It sounds like you would benefit from an upgrade. You could also plan to take more frequent breaks when painting to keep the temperature down. Hey Bill! I just picked up the ultrasonic cleaner you linked. Do you dilute the all-purpose cleaning solvent? Most large jugs are concentrated.

    I just bought an airbrush with an air compressor after years of painting props and armor by hand and had no idea where to start, I know this video is a bit old, but it has helped me understand much more how I should treat and start using it ~ Thank you :D

    Thanks Bill I have been struggling with analysis paralysis when it comes to airbrushes for quite some time. I wanted one but I was just to intimidated by them.

    Thank you very much for this video. My wife got an airbrush for costume makeup, and we didn't clean it very well. It's nice to know that's not the end of the world for that nice piece of equipment.

    Good video. I like that you don't poopoo cheap airbrushes. :P
