We have a large Sikh community in Australia. During the recent bushfires they travelled to the firezones with truckloads of food and water for the firefighters and local residents. Their bravery in battle is only exceeded by their generosity to people in need. I can't imagine my nation without them. They're a great people.

In 1944 my father was seriously wounded fighting at Monte Casino, Italy. He was in a ditch that was filling with water so he tied himself to a large bush using his belt hoping this would keep his head above the water. Some time later he was woken by a large man wearing a Turban with a beard. He thought he was dead and it was God waking him. It was a Sikh sergeant, who carried my father for a mile and a half to the nearest medical station. The Sikh left and presumably returned to his unit. I have 5 brothers and 1 sister, if it wasn't for this man none of us would exist. I was a British soldier for over 30 years and served with Sikhs, very honourable, generous and brave people with a great sense of humour and duty. We don't even know the name, unit or anything about this Sikh soldier. As old soldiers my father who is now 98 talk about this man and hope he made it home to his family and lived a long and happy life. What a great man, soldier and above all, what a great Sikh.

When my wife and I bought our home (our first home) in upstate NY in 2015, the local corner store/gas station happened to be owned by a Sikh family. Over the past three (going on 4) years, I got to know them very, very well and I would consider them friends and foundationial elements of my neighborhood. I know the mother and son extremely well, and they are endlessly kind and generous. I've only met the father and daughter once or twice. The mother and son are the nuts and bolts of the operation. At the beginning I struck up a friendship with the son, since he tends to work the night shift, when I usually stop in. He just turned 23. At the beginning, his English was limited to very basic greetings, but I would take a bit of time, hang out and converse, which he was super hungry for. He really wanted to become a fluent speaker, but working at a counter you don't get extended conversation. He's a super smart kid and I think I managed to explain a lot of American slang. Nowadays he's definitely fluent, and I can hear that he's losing the heaviness of his accent on a monthly basis, so much so that it's very easy to understand him and he's able to effortlessly communicate complex answers to complex questions that other customers have. He was limited to yes/no/thanks/have a nice day, but now he's got everything from "whats' up" to "U extra bruh" and knows how to give a pound, a high five, thumbs up, daps and anything else a modern American young person needs to understand modern youth culture.
Just yesterday the mother was working. I stopped in for my smokes and a six pack of beer and she refused to ring me up because she needed to give me a Christmas gift. I protested, she bobbed her head and said they've been having a very good month and her son says "Mark is a bomb". She shooed me out with free smokes, a sixer of expensive craft beer and a bag of piping hot, homemade pea and potato samosas. As I was going out the door I said (phonetically) "matwanu car dyhan" because that's what the son says to her often when he hugs her like I would my Mom and I think it means I Love You. She started weeping quietly like a grandma, came around the counter and hugged me, so I think I said something good.
If a disaster ever happened, they would be the first people I would desperately rush to help after making sure my wife is safe.

The Sikhs wear a steel bracelet on the right wrist.
      The purpose is threefold.
      1. Being made of lowly steel and not precious metal, it reminds one to be humble.
      2. When one raises his arm, the bracelet is visible to the wearer, to remind him that his actions should only be for righteous deeds.

He wore a green turban with a flash and the unit insignia centered on the front of the turban instead of a green beret. -Beard is tied down so it is dont add more than few millimetres over your face.there are several methods to do this under army rules and regulations and If your beard isnt long enough to be properly tied down u wear a net cloth over your beard. (If you are confused what it means just google ‘sikh regiment’ and go to images)
-same goes for turban as well, turban comes in all shapes, size, colours and there are different turbans which goes with combat uniform and ceremonial uniform. And this colour and style combination changes from regiment to regiment.
At the end of the day you need to make a soldier.

Hearing about this battle and their bravery definitely makes them among the fiercest warriors I have ever heard of. The fact that they fought to the last man and had a kill ratio of over 30 to 1 is amazing. 21 against 12,000 is the stuff legends are made of. I just saw the bollywood movie "Kesari", depicting this very battle today. The battle opens with the attacking party of Afghan tribesmen taking heavy casualties. The battle then pauses with the peace party of tribal leaders moving towards the fort. The commander of the fort, Ishar Singh meets up with them. The mullah (a member of the peace party) insists that they either surrender or abandon the fort ( the fort of saragarhi is strategically located as a heliographic communication post between fort Gulistan and fort Lockhart and they cannot see or communicate with each other without saragarhi. Taking saragarhi would mean cutting off communications between Gulistan and Lockhart) and promises them a safe passage out. He further adds choosing to continue fight means a certain doom for the defending party. To which Ishar Singh politely replies, "we have already won the battle when we chose to make this final stand against all odds. The battle then resumes at 11:05 AM and the defenders fall one by one untill all 21 Sikhs and Khuda daad (an ethnic Pathan cook in the fort) are dead. However, they held the fort untill around 4 PM. The attackers now knew that it was too late to attack either fort Gulistan or Lockhart as the sun was setting and British reinforcements were on the way.

The reason Sikhism is filled with compassionate, highly secular and brave people, is the fact that this religion was formed on the basis of the two greatest virtues Brotherhood and Courage. Guru Nanak the great Saint who formed Sikhism was by birth a Hindu, and a divine soul who spent his entire life travelling across the world with his best friend Bhai Mardana a Muslim, promoting universal brotherhood and the thought that 'God was One and so are We'; this made all the secular minded Hindu people take up Sikhism. Then as invaders from across the world started ravaging India and converting Hindus, the Sikh Warrior Guru's appealed to the bravest of Hindu warriors to join Sikhism to become the protectors of Hindus and the Motherland, that's when another surge of the bravest men of India joined Sikhism. Thus the virtues and nobility amongst the Sikhs was so high that their great Warrior Guru Gobind Singhji would attach a piece of small gold to his every arrow, so that in case an enemy died from his hands, the dead man's family could collect the gold in order to survive.

The forts on the border used by the British Indian army were build by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, the Sikhs emperor of Punjab . Post the defeat of the Sikhs in 1846 , the forts came under British control . The area was added to Punjab and by default India by the Sikhs . It was always Afghan territory and never been historically part of India . Kashmir , Ladakh and Aksi Chin was also added by the Sikhs including parts of what is now Baluchistan . Yesterday, watched the movie "Kesari" . This movie is about this war only. My eyes were in tears for the long part of the movie. However, none of the movies can depict the actual war situations under the circumstances 36-Sikh regiment were in, but it is still worth watching. I am just not able to write properly as even visualizing it, triggers tear in the eyes.
The tradition of these extraordinary super-humans still continued by their predecessors. India can never be defeated militarily until Sikhs are serving in the Indian Army. No wonder the Sikh regiment is the most decorated regiment of the Indian Army (Sorry, do not want to offend or disrespect any soldier of any other regiment of Indian Army or any country's Army).
In modern warfare the technology is driving towards highly sophisticated weapons, but the man (do not want to offend women also) behind the machine still matters. An individual's true potential reflects when he is cornered back to the wall. An individual's capacity to outgrow his potential to a multi-fold reservoir of boundless energy to fight against all odds puts him into a league of extraordinary super-humans. Battle of Saragarhi is about these 21 super-humans.

The Sikhs are not “pantheistic” as you state. They are followers of a Wisdom tradition give to them by their Ten Gurus and compiled in their Holy Book which is read in perpetuity in the Holiest of Holy places in their temples. They are monotheistic and consider themselves “God’s warriors.” Within the Sikh nation, there are certain “sects” or divisions of warrior groups. All religious Sikhs however, combine Wisdom into their daily lives. I am not a Sikh but had the pleasure of being close to these good people for a number of years. What you have shared in this video is an example of their courage and their firm religious faith.

At the same time these Sikhs were caught in their commitments to the British crown, their fellow countrymen were starving due to British taxes. The British policy of divide and rule working at it's best.
Punjabis are quite diverse. Mixed Muslim, Hindu and Sikh. And they're a tough people. People don't ask how Indians could be so committed to the British crown when they were effectively second class citizens in the empire.
