    It's a shame that Canon hasn't done more with the EOS M system, but what's available is truly incredible and underrated. Few people talk about or recognize how great Canon's offerings are in this space. The 22mm is the smallest first-party autofocus lens from any APS-C manufacturer and the image quality is extremely good. It makes the camera so fun and pocketable while giving a similar look of a 35mm f/2.8 on full frame. Kind of excellent for general photography and street shooting. Then they finally introduce this 32mm f/1.4 which gives a very similar look of 50mm f/2 on full frame. All in a small, lightweight package that's designed to be used wide open with its high sharpness and lack of lens aberrations. While the kit 15-45 isn't going to win any image quality awards, it does win a place in my bag for being a very small and practical lens for traveling and general use. Damn, and then there's the 11-22 and 55-250! Honestly, all of the lenses are great. Just have to keep this in your mind as a small, travel camera or a fun camera for general use. I don't think there is any system better on the market with APS-C.

    I'm surprised how much better this one seems to perform on your test chart than the Sony 35mm f/1.8 IS and the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 R
    If only Canon invested a bit more into fleshing out the lineup of EF-M lenses... Fuji and Sony still seem like better options overall if you want more glass.

  • @AshleyPaul
    @AshleyPaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I understand that people think this lens is too expensive, but Sony charges $429 for a 35mm f/1.8 which is not even in the same class as this lens, though it does have OSS. Fuji charges $599 for a 35mm f1/4 lens with poor AF. Olympus charges $399 for a 25mm f/1.8 which is a nice lens with no weaknesses but can't compare in wow factor. Panasonic charges $697 for a 25mm f/1.4, which is an amazing lens, mind you, but still.... Canon is charging $479 for a 50mm-equivalent that has no weaknesses: great picture quality, biting sharpness, great wide aperture, excellent bokeh, pretty fast and very accurate AF, good enough build, extremely compact. Good glass costs money, but the 22mm and 32mm are both amazing values for the money with no major weaknesses, and you won't find another system that has those two equivalent lenses priced so fairly.

  • @khuo0219

    Way better than the 7artisan 35mm manual focus where I got because Canon did not have a 50mm equivalent with large aperture. Now I am conflicted. I found the manual focus too difficult with kids and the 32 1.4 too expensive. I wish this lens is affordable like the 22mm. Great review, as always

    I just got out of the EOS-M system for a second time. I love these cameras, but the lack of commitment from Canon and my desire to shoot invest more into my full-frame lenses had me part ways with my M50 after selling my M5 about a year ago as well. I would say this lens and the 22mm are the "must own" lenses for the system. If they would be so kind to release at fast 10mm or 15mm prime I would probably get back into the system just for traveling.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree! I'd buy an EF-M 15mm f/1.4 or f/2.0 immediatelly. As I did with the 32mm as soon as it was available. :)

      @@MariNate1016 I sold my whole kit to a friend for $1200. Was the M50, 11-22, 15-45, 22mm and a 12mm f/2 Rokinon. Probably could have asked for more in open market. Not sure why everyone thinks they need to switch brands, but whatever works for you and you want to do. I personally don't have any issues with the target the EOS-M is trying to attack - small and compact.

    This is the nifty fifty Canon needs. The actual 50mm F1.8 which I bought long ago due to the overwhelming amount of suggestions was a very poor choice. It's too long for a lot of shots, full of optical problems wide open on aps-c, and once you stop it down enough it's not that bright. This looks like a perfect 50mm F2 equivalent. Well done Canon.

    • @Sandreas95
      @Sandreas95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am going to wait for my Viltrox EF-EOS M2 focal reducer/speedbooster to see how my 50 f1.4 does as a 56.5mm f1! Canon seems to be willing to invest more time and effort on the M cameras with their M50 which is a great little package at least for stills shooter and their patent for their own focal reducer. Canon apparently also has a patent for a soft focus EF to R adapter which is great because EF lenses are not optimised for mirrorless and their constant hunting/micro-adjusting is irritating! I hope they will also make a soft focus adapter for the M system.
    I can't wait to see the impact on the image quality of the focal reducer with my 50mm 1.4 and 24-70 2.8 L lenses ... might also through the 85mm 1.8, my 20mm 2.8 (although I own the 22mm EF-M) and my Tokina 17mm f3.5. At £119 on Amazon this Viltrox is a no brainer I think.

    • @AhpgZfoc4s
      @AhpgZfoc4s 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Canon's 50 1.4 is competent but not particularly good so I imagine it will be quite a bit worse, with the exception of background blur, than the EF-M 32mm Chris reviewed once you've got an inexpensive focal reducer on it. But then, the focal reducer does multiply your options and costs a lot less.

    • @Photoandcargeek
      @Photoandcargeek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AhpgZfoc4s yes but reducing the focal will improve the resolution of the lens and should make it perform closer to how it performs on full frame ... Except for the fact that the extra glass elements might deteriorate the image. The problem is that the theory on these reducers shows that they could work perfectly with one lens and terribly with another one.

    • @Photoandcargeek
      @Photoandcargeek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AhpgZfoc4s oh and the other thing that I won't be able to try but should be interesting is using the focal reducer with EF-S lenses (or compatible such as the sigma 18-35mm 1.8) to compensate for the 4K crop. That should hurt the lens resolution though but maybe some lenses are good enough to take the hit especially when shooting video as it is only 4K and not the full 24mpix.

    • @Tantacula
      @Tantacula 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AhpgZfoc4s I ordered this reducer and tested it with 100mm 2.0 - it's not very good. I got 1.4 aperture instead of 2.0, but 1.4 is very soft (for me 1.4 is unusable with this quality). 2.0 is better and 2.8 is sharp, but only in the centre. Corners are not important with the portraits, but I think it will not be usable with wide angle lenses. Also, this reducer drains up my battery (when my camera is turned off) and it catches lots of lens flares. If you want to get low quality options - you'll receive it with this cheap solution.

    Finally you came across this lens, thank you :) I agree that the only serious drawback is the price - especially while the lens doesn´t have IS but I guess that the IS would make this lens too big for the EF-M mount, or simply too expensive (but I am no technician, I don´t really know how much room the IS system needs). Am I right that to get non-blurred photos (without a tripod), you have to shoot at least at 1/50-60?

    • @ma3xiu1
      @ma3xiu1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the so-called "reciprocal rule" -- you take the full-frame equivalent focal length in mm (ie. multiply by the crop factor, so 32*1.6=51) then take the reciprocal (eg. 1/51) and that is a guide for the slowest shutter speed you should use for hand-holding. It's not really a hard and fast rule, just a rough starting point. In the end, you need to review the handheld shot you just took by zooming in and see if the motion blur is acceptable or not.

  • @MingHsiung

    Thanks for the review - I went and bought this lens! I'm not sure if it's the camera or the lens but anyone else notice when set to manual focus - if you make the shot super blurry - the photo taken is more in focus than what you see on the LCD screen? I wish it was WYSIWYG...

    Picked this lens up used which I thought was a better price than the MSRP. It's quite amazing in everything except AF in video with my m50. It's pretty slow at wide apertures with big changes in focus which I'm guessing is a product of the wide aperture, motor and magnification ratio of .25. Pretty much in line with your review except for your hope that it was faster with DPAF. What a great lens!

    Hi Chris. I simply love your videos, it so detailed and technical. Yet simple to understand and follow. Quick question, i am an amateur photographer, i have the Canon M50 and the lenses i have are the kit lens 15-45 efm, 22 Prime pancake lens which i use for street photography and portraits. I want a lens which i want to use for landscaped dedicatedly, i want a prime lens, should i go for the Canon 11-22 efm or sigma 16 mm? Also i think the third option is getting a 32 mm efm. What do you think i should buy so that have a well rounded lens option. Bear in mind i can only buy one of these as my budget is about 500 dollars. Thanks.

    What I like with the mirrorless Sony e-mount system is that both full frame and APS-C e-mount lenses can be used in both APS-C and full frame e-mount cameras.
    Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm didn't follow that.
    The Canon EOS-M lenses are restricted to EOS-M camera bodies. They are not compatible even with an adapter with the new full frame mirrorless Canon EOS-R camera. I believe that Canon betrayed the owners of EOS-M cameras and lenses.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On paper it sounds great, but in reality it's always a compromise - at least with small APSC bodies like A6XXX or EOS M5. When I bought the EOS M5 I started using it with EF lenses... after half a year of pain I realized it's not the way. A small APSC body is terrible with most fullframe lenses. Now I use almost exclusivelly EF-M lenses. The situation can be different for bigger APSC bodies (eg. 7D) and it seems like Canon won't have those in EF-M mount.

    • @AgnostosGnostos
      @AgnostosGnostos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Karel Mačalík It is true that most of times APS-C lenses are better than full frame lenses on APS-C cameras. However if you have an old full frame lens it is conveniently to use it with an APS-C camera instead of buying a new APS-C lens with similar optical characteristics.

      @ There're reasonably sized and priced FE lens to use on Sony APS-C, to name a few the FE28/2, FE85/1.8, Samyang 24/2.8AF. One could also use the FE70-200G and various Zeiss lens if budget is not a concern, plus the Sigma trio that's easily more choice than EOS-M(except a quality normal zoom I'd agree, dang Sony)

    • @m1k869
      @m1k869 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yuyip7926 But they are bigger than necessary, or not as fast as possible with that extra image circle. I use the FE 35mm /2.8 Samyang on the a6000 and I love it - it at least is sharp enough to serve the APS-C sensor not like the 24mm Samyang (don't know about the sony lenses). But I believe if it was a native APS-C lens it would be even smaller or a brighter maximum aperture would have been possible. Having 2 mounts isn't too bad of an idea actually. Or offering more APS-C only lenses (which comes down to the same), are you listening sony?

      Canon's sensor at the time of its release was competitive with Sony APSC cameras. It's in fact the same sensor used in the 80D which was noted by reviewers for having a healthy amount of DR, good ISO performance and sharp results. Since the a6500, Sony haven't come out with anything when it comes to making new APSC cameras with new APSC sensors.

Using the Viltrox .71 Speed Booster with the EF 50mm you get down to F/1.2 and an effective focal length of 56mm versus the 32mm effective of 51mm and F/1.4. Get a discounted X-T2 and get an F2 prime (23,35,50, 35mm F2 is GREAT first lens) or the 18-55. The affordable Fuji lenses are of much better quality than the cheaper lenses from canon, if you are on a budget.
      Just feel them in your hands, the T7i and the M50 will feel like toys after trying the X-T2. ıt might seem weird at first, once you get used to the beautiful retro controls and dials of Fuji, you can never go back ;).
      I sold my old 7D Mark I, got a T7i, traded it for an M50 after a month, sold the M50 after another month and got an X-T3, couldn't be happier!
      APS-C cameras from Canon do not even come close to fuji. Canon does not make any proper lenses for APS-C, and this 32mm is too expensive...

      @Kay Yep! The canon 32mm is very sharp. However, it seems like canon is not taking aps-c seriously, unlike fujifilm, and the lens line-up is sadly very lacking even after all these years since the launch of the original eos m. Also neither the 32mm, nor any of canon's aps-c mirrorless cameras have any sort of weather sealing, and IMO they shouldn't feel so plasticky at these prices. (Canon efm 32mm 480$, Fujifilm 35mmF2 Weather saatler 400$)
