FMA for me is the most well rounded martial arts in the world. All the techniques work with a stick a knife or just plain hands. Superb

This is the basics of Balintawak. In the grouping system one of the first thing we teach is defense to the 12 basic strikes. In these lessons we teach is control. Ryan responds quickly with force but it is controlled to not hit the teacher. The teacher does not move on till they can deliver quick and in control. Once he get this lesson other attributes are introduced. In the reaction based Balintawak both parties are attacking and defending almost hard to see who is feeding and who is receiving.

This is an actual statement made directly to Maha Guru SGMD, by Great Grandmaster Guru Angel Cabales.
According to Maha Guru SGMD, when Angel Cabales made this statement to him, he was referring to one of his many past combative encounters that took place in the Philippines.
The story goes like this; One day while Angel was on ship leave in the central part of the Philippines, he went to go visit a very pretty young woman that he had previously met before.
As Angel approached the village where this woman lived, he was met by some of the men of the village who told him that the "Shaman" of their village had forbidden any outsiders to mingle in any way with the young women of the village.
These same men explained to Angel, that the Shaman had great magical powers & had already used his magical powers to kill two prior suiter's. "Well! said Angel to Maha Guru SGMD, I've never believed in magic, and I wasn't going to let a 'tall-tale' stand in my way from me seeing my girlfriend."
"So as I walked up the pathway leading to the village entrance way, I was met halfway by the village Shaman, who warned me that if my intentions are to see any of the young women in his village, then as an outsider, he would have to kill me by using his magical powers. After this statement was made, I instantly whipped out my kamagong (iron wooden stick) & speedily cracked the Shaman over the head with it, which instantly knocked the Shaman out cold. The Shaman was ko-d before he could even touch the ground."
"As the Shaman lay on the ground straddled & knocked out, I then asked him, how come your magical powers couldn't block my stick".

'Kamagong' is a type of ebony hardwood from the tree that bears 'mabolo' fruit. It is dense and hard (source of the nickname ironwood). It tends to be used to make the 'bastones', 'batutas' or 'Palo(s)' for dueling in Arnis. (When carved correctly from chosen wood, it can approximate the weight of metal blades.) The rattan, yantok or caña common today was just for practice and demos. A lot is said of how 'deadly' rattan can be, at a certain length, sure. With a 'kamagong' baston, a clear hit would break a collarbone or render someone unconscious at no more than a forearm length 'batuta' (club).
If Angel was travelling as a known fighter/duelist, he wouldve been carrying a Kamagong baston, not a yantok...
For those looking to buy 'Kamagong' bastones from the Philippines, be careful. Since the wood is expensive, a lot just try to get as much canes turned out of a block for the tourists. What you tend to get is something pretty and looks the part but splits neatly when it hits something solid. The part of the wood used for weaponry needs to be chosen carefully in the same way quality bokken are made....

Yada BenYisrael it’s never too late to resume your training. The beauty of Eskrima/Arnis is that all the force and impact is transferred to the stick. Unlike my past arts that I’ve learned I too have limits in my forty’s that I didn’t have in my twenties or even in my teens. My instructor now is in his eightys and he is just lethal with his stick.

The fight coordinator for the new Dune movie admitted in an interview with New York Times that he used Balintiwak Escrima to choreograph the knife fighting scenes in the Dune film.
It's always cool to watch GM Taboada demonstrate footwork and the nuances that come with it. It also gives you a glimpse into how fight tested the system was back during its infancy days in the streets of Cebu. I hope I get to meet him someday.
In a seminar in Phoenix, I asked Master Bout if he trains with 2 sticks. His answer was profoundly simple:
“Why? Do you know how lucky you’ll be if you get in a fight and could find one good stick? You think you’ll find two evenly matched ones?”
I stopped training with 2 sticks that day.

Jock Mo it was a dream to see him live because I've always seen him in videos. The guy in the glasses is the son of GM Sam Buot and it was nice to see him keeping up with GM Bobby Taboada. To see the speed, power, control and how close the stick gets with his head was just amazing.
Not too many people can actually live up to the phrase, "bad to the bone." This man genuinely does. Very cool stick disarms at the end, thanks for sharing!

Wow! So lucky to found this in TH-cam and I'm very grateful that you shared this. I live in the Philippines and I feel sad that there are no clubs or groups of FMA near my place and I'm only learning the form/art of FMA(particualarly Arnis) through TH-cam videos. I'm mixing my training with karate and boxing for empty hand strikes and I just recently into weapons because I believe it's important to know how to strike with it if the opportunity arrives (which I hope it wont happen). Love from Philippines!
Check to see if there is a Tabimina Balintawak System near your area. Sir Bob and Flint live there and have a couple chapters in the Philippines.

Another Grandmaster I enjoyed watching one of my favorite found him online 2 years ago watching one of his short videos solved a issue as I had alone time as a practitioner excuse sufficient movement with my left arm as a result of a health issue which put it limitations on movement but that did not discourage me after years earlier had came across the story of one of the Filipino stick fighting arts be founded by a one arm man this and some others kelp me faithful interested in this combative art as well as the role Filipino native women played in the combative art survival which is not well spoken of it has so some similarities in its story you would understand why it Blends good with practitioners of Wing Chun and JKD then you would be surprised what you find and I agree FMA is a strong well-rounded martial arts system by itself if one is call to depend on it alone

Is he the grandmaster and what kind of arnis style is this looks like arnis with a little bit mix of wingchun? liking this one stick style.
Troa do a TH-cam search on Balintawak Eskrima or Balintawak Arnis. Balintawak has been always compared with Wing Chun with a stick. I call it a simple system and can be as intricate as you want it. Balintawak is a single stick system and has opted the other hand to not holding another stick or blade but to use it to monitor, to hold, to clear and to punch. Please also look up Bobby Taboada, his system is name Balintawak Arnis Cuentada. He has a large following and made balintawak what it is today. There are other "Balintawak" linages each having their own "flavor" similar to Wing Chun. But it's an effective system and makes you faster.

I'm not sure, Balintawak is definitely an art where you need an instructor teaching you 1 on 1. Though I have taught some distant training through apps like Marco Polo at least the basics you need someone with you once you get past the Basic 12 strikes and then defense and counter. My thought is you can only reach a certain point, and maybe either fly someone in or you attend an intensive/seminar.
Try to block his left hand avoid that by holding your stick if the opponent touch or hold your stick the game is over

Victor Gallur we were very fortunate that he came. He is a friend of GM Sam Buot and they have a lot of history together. GM Sam was instrumental when he first came to the states and he lived in one of GM Sam’s town house here in Arizona for several months.

Though I’m no longer with this linage, I’m aware that it is hung vertical, but it is a wartime way of hanging it. Not sure why Manong Sam did it that way but I know he had the emblem made for him by an artist.

In any sport or arts. Nothing is perfect at first. Aim for 1 min of perfection. Next Aim for 2 minutes...so forth and so on.

jamiirali1 Yes, we have similar methodology but different approaches. Without going through a big explanation of linage and master. We can all say that Anciong Bacon is our founding father of our system. Each master has unique story and emphasis on how they interpret and teach their student. Some masters had longer time with Anciong and and kept his teaching sacred while others have improved and implement what they see fit. Our model are similar in that we have stages of being a student vs being a feeder and switching roles. Where in advance students learn how to take control and keep control. I would refer you to read some books on Balintawak. Especially Sam Buot book called Balintawak Eskrima available on Amazon.com
