I Bought the CHEAPEST Japanese Kei Truck on Facebook!

  • I bought a Kei Truck! Specifically a 1992 Mitsubishi Mighty Mits, powered by a ~600cc 3 cylinder engine making about 30 horsepower. We're going to build it into a go kart hauler and general shop truck for the CarsandCameras Motorplex! The question is- should we build it low and fast with a street bike engine, or lift it and make it a recovery vehicle?
    Thanks for Watching!

I've been watching lots of your videos. It's brought back memories of a mini bike and a go kart that I cobbled together in summer school shop classes. I'm 62 and those shop classes were so long ago. You have me thinking about getting a welder and plasma cutter and a tubing bender and giving it another go round. This time money won't be as much of a problem as it was when I was in high school. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm in western Oklahoma and the local farmers LOVE these little trucks, it is SO funny to see a 70 year old with a straw cowboy hat and bib overalls cruising around my little town in these of course the ones around here are all right hand drive and most are Suzuki since you can order parts from your local motorcycle shop, lol. They have been street legal here for years.

A local car dealership had kei trucks as parts delivery vehicles, they were fitted with bullbars. The drivers would clamp off the rear brake line and brake heavily in order to try to get them to roll forwards and stand momentarily on the bullbar before falling back (hopefully) onto it's wheels.

this is the first left hand drive kei truck i've ever seen. i've got a mitsubishi mighty max truck. it's basically a dodge d50. these kei trucks are pretty good at what they were designed for. in japan they are the standard pick up truck. they're more useful and cheaper than a side by side. some of them have dump beds, are 4x4 and have ac. most parts are available online, and they are fairly simple. i'd say you got a hell of a deal with a twofer 2k.

We had those POS light trucks in the Marines in Beaufort S.C., we used em to run airplane parts up and down the flightline to and from supply. You can trick the governor if you reach top speed, then put it in first and do NOT let off the clutch all the way, just a bit to make the computer think you're in first. Then you get another 20 mph. Don't go past that, you'll blow the engine.

I bought it not knowing it wasn't street legal. I was kind of stuck with what to do next. Now, since you told us NCDMV has a process to get these things street legal, I'd love to see what it takes. Also, can't you go both routes for a street-legal 4x4 work rig? Who says it has to be one or the other. Love the channels. Keep up the good work!

This mini truck really reminds me of my home country, Taiwan. An auto manufacturer named CMC manufactured a modified version of this Mitsubishi truck as the Veryca, and they still produce mini trucks and small vans that are based on Mitsubishis. The older and newer models are very common all over the country as work trucks and vans. A lot of the older ones get rusty though because of the high humidity there. I believe the Taiwanese CMC mini trucks were imported and sold in the US as Cushman mini trucks, so you can try finding one of those :)

If you're lucky, that /might/ be a full 4 speed transmission with 4th simply blocked off... Seems there were a few varieties from a gear not cut to begin with, to a couple of methods of just keeping the shifter from going there. (Unsure, but possibly model number under seat(?), 7th char if F may can be unblocked, possibly just either a collar on shift rail, or a plug was put in the housing behind shift rail, if P then a synchro gear was likely left uncut and sol). Figure out how to disable the governor and hopefully unblock that gear, and watch it go faster than you'd ever actually want to be in it for that particular ride. XD

If it's possible to get it road legal, the out-there plan would be a micro RV for your next road trip: shell on the back, camp bed, water tanks and butane stove, and perhaps a tent for Ike to sleep on a beach the way he seems to like doing.
Also I guess it needs to have a tug o' war with whatever you have that will compete - maybe the Yerf dog?

If it's going to be a recovery vehicle you'll need some sort of crane or lift to get carts into the bed.

Needs a 1000cc street bike engine to spruce up the ol Mullet Mobile. Or... a Kubota 3 cyl diesel would be sweet.

I use to Hit the brakes and Rear Wheels would fly up LOL!!!
I use to load a 500cc Race Quad And Full Size Dirt Bike on her and do 200KM Trips with her all the time!
I sold her off 10 years ago.. After my brother PAssed away in a car accident , I Wanted something a little more "safe" For a Daily driver.
Made some good Coin selling her! But wish i would have not sold her!
    Was WAY too Much Fun!!

Cars and cameras. I've got a very similar 3-wheeler like the one you just got with your k truck. I'm in the process of restoring it. It's a 1970's tri sport all sport 3-wheeler

you guys could get an ecotec from a hhr or cobalt or even a potiac super cheap within $500 and i'm sure you could use the other parts to upgrade this nice new pit/pace truck. scrap what you don't need toget some money back, Push comes to shove buy a cheap Mitsubishi or dodge ram 50 4x4 for cheap i bet you could do some swapping around if you want to go the 4x4 route.
