I used to drive these slag trains and molten iron torpedo car trains in the UK in the 1970's.

Looks similar to a Treadwell design. Notice the rack and pinion beside the rolling surface. The gear train is likely two parallel gear sets driving a worm that rotates the pinion and bale.

Maybe if they sprayed the inside of the cars with Pam, the slag would slide out a lot easier. It works with fried eggs! LOL

It is so called "section"-planetary gearing (I don't know the right word in English:), not worm.
Process was simulated by means of SolidWorks Simulation.
