Hot metal pretreatment process from Torpedo car - locomotive ladle - EAF charging

The purpose of a blast furnace is to reduce and convert iron oxides into liquid iron called hot metal. The blast furnace is a huge, steel stack lined
with refractory brick. Iron ore, coke and limestone are put into the top, and preheated air is blown into the bottom. Nowadays, blast furnace technology becomes the eldest way to produce hot metal with high efficiency of energy (zero electricity).

Sparks are small bits of metal, the sparks in steel making is a common phenomena due to a contact of two or more metals, and also some gases around the furnace. Small iron particles which is flying around the air it can caused the sparks also.

Mostly to do with gravity - the railway track bringing the torpedo cars into the plant has to be pretty much level, so if they poured the blast furnace hot metal directly into the EAF, that would have to be sunk into the ground; the steel that comes out of the EAF goes downwards into a ladle for casting, so that’d have to be sunk even further into the ground. Then the foundations for all those heavy structures would have to be sunk further into the ground. In the end it’s just cheaper and more convenient to build up above ground. Then, since it’s impractical to lift a torpedo car up to pour into the EAF, it’s easier to pour the molten metal into an intermediate ladle, which is sometimes also used for additional processing e.g. desulpurisation, before pouring into the EAF.
