    Hey peeps! A few people have mentioned it so I probably should've mentioned in the video about the stain. Faux Effects is a bonding product, it doesn't penetrate the surface the same way as traditional stains. I sanded the wood to smooth because it's better not to sand large areas of the stain if possible once it's dry. Sanding can break down the pigments and the bond if it's not done correctly.👩‍🎨🥰

    WOW!! She turned out GORGEOUS!! Especially all the different types of damage you had to repair. Extremely impressed with your woodworking skills, like repairing the corner using wooden dowels (the toothpicks) and cutting a piece of wood vs shaping epoxy wood filler. I’ve watched some of these pro woodworkers (like with equipment in their shop that costs as much as my house) use these skills and you were spot on with your technique. Especially having a detailed edge on that drawer front! You mentioned you had some areas that stained darker in some areas. I had the same issue on a piece and it was bc I sanded higher than 220. I found out (by reaching out to some furniture restorers) that sanding anything over a 220 grit makes it hard for the wood to “accept the stain” bc the wood fibers are too closed up (Angie at Transcend Furniture Gallery was a huge help in this). I know this was a lot of time consuming work, but the end result was so worth it!💜

    • @CopperCactusDIY
      @CopperCactusDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ashley you're so very kind! Thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰 I did have a long call with my dad to work out doing that corner with the dowels. That absolutely terrified me until the holes were drilled and toothpicks fit! Thankfully maple is a hard wood so even that thin area didn't split 😓 A few people have mentioned it so I probably should've mentioned in the video about the stain. Faux Effects is a bonding product, it doesn't penetrate the surface the same as traditional stains. I sanded the wood to smooth because it's better not to sand large areas of the stain if possible once it's dry. Sanding can break down the pigments and the bond if it's not done correctly. Hmm, gets me thinking, maybe I should do a whole video on various stain sometime? 🤔 Thanks again so much!

    • @ashleyosborne6239
      @ashleyosborne6239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CopperCactusDIY gotcha re Faux Effects. I thought it was more like a gel stain, which while it sits on top of the wood, it does penetrate the first layer. Vs liquid oil or solvent based stains, that does penetrate. A video on different stains would be a great idea! Even using different types of wood, when to use a pre-stain wood conditioner, etc. I’m a gel stain person myself and was terrified to use it the first time, until I realized how easy it was to use.
      Always great to have someone to call on (like your dad). My husband does woodworking as a hobby, so he’s my go to when I need help. Now if I can just get him to keep his saw dust off my stuff in the garage…🤪.

      @@CopperCactusDIY true! I bought a really nice 6hp shop vac (plus it has a vacuum bag in it) to connect to my new Surf Prep and told him “hands off buddy”.🤣 Seriously though, I made sure we could connect it to his table saw and router, but it isn’t to be used for anything else (like vacuuming the stuff off the garage floor, that’s what the old shop vac is for😁).

    Your restoration is lovely! I have a vintage (antique maybe) Crawford maple dresser and what I really like about it is the finish color. A restoration is kind of a trade off: the piece loses that original luster but becomes a gorgeous new creation. For now, I’ll try to figure out how to clean it up and maybe someday consider a full resto. You are very talented at your crafts (furniture refinishing and entertaining and helpful TH-cam videos)!

      That's so nice of you, thanks so much! 🥰 You'll have to stop by and let me know if you ever do decide to restore. Sometimes the original piece is just in such disrepair it's necessary to give the refresh to save the wood. This one never would've worked to try to color match with the original cherry. My client was thrilled and that's the thing that matters most to me!

    Wow! That’s a huge improvement! The corner hack is genius and I have a drawer on a maple dresser that is broken off exactly like that. Now I know how to fix it. My experience when sanding wood I am staining is to only go as high as 220 grit. The wood doesn’t take stain well when I go above that. Maybe the grain is closed? Idk. I do dance breaks all day! I am a big fan of dance breaks! This was a really informative video and I’m glad you kept so much info in.🌸

    • @CopperCactusDIY
      @CopperCactusDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure, Deborah, that's usually what I'd do with a penetrating wood stain like oil and some gel stains. This brand is a bit different in the formulation so I don't like to sand over large areas unless absolutely necessary. It has more bonding properties once cured if that makes sense, it doesn't really raise the grain. Ahhh so glad you can fix your corner now! That rocks! And yesss! Love that you're a dance break fan too 💃 gotta stay loose with all the weird positions we have to paint in lol. Thanks so much! 🥰

    Maple always needs a pre-stain conditioner as it receives stain in very blotchy patterns. If you had used this, you wouldn't have had so much work to do getting the stain to look good. However, in the end, you got there. It's beautiful ❣️

    • @CopperCactusDIY
      @CopperCactusDIY  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I appreciate that you enjoyed the end result. However, this particular brand of stain (Faux Effects Stain and Seal) will not function properly over a pre-stain wood conditioner, regardless of wood type. The formula doesn't penetrate, it bonds. It would bond with the pre-stain and eventually peel off the surface. This is why it's important to understand the particular product as well as the substrate it requires to be successful.

    Great job! Lots of work. I’m about to restore a 1920’s sewing cabinet that needs lots of gluing. 😆 I love the tone of the wood stain you used but I think it might be do opaque for me. If you water it down does it show more of the wood grain?

    • @CopperCactusDIY
      @CopperCactusDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stain and Seal is an interesting formula. It can be watered down slightly but shouldn't be cut more than about 10%. It's not really a gel stain and won't penetrate the surface, instead it bonds. But you never lose pigment so the opacity might still be a problem even with multiple light layers. Thanks so much, and good luck!
