Hey Mark I wrote this long thing a bit ago but I’m just going to say thank you for the kind words and the trip down memory lane. I did write this bass line before there were vocals. The song was basically done musically and Tony asked me to come up with a bass line for it. He was an awesome songwriter and my friend. It means a lot that you would do a breakdown of this. ✌🏻
You are a legend and I miss Tony like a friend even though I never met him. I used to lay on the floor in my bedroom and listen to your records on repeat for hours. You guys taught me how to be a good songwriter and Tony taught me to sing. I played in a bunch of bands when I was younger and that helped me get out of my shell and be successful in life. I owe you a ton and I hope you see this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Matt you are awesome as a bass player and as a human being. I will never forget how cool you were to me when you played with NUFAN in Brazil. It was one of the best days of my life. Thanks for all these songs and stories!
NEVER FORGET TONY SLY!! 07/31 will be the anniversary of his passing. Please do another video in his honor. He was an amazing songwriter and a good dude as well.
Never forget Tony Sly. He was such a great song writer. Fat Mike said he was the best he knew. Almost 12 years to the day he died. I hope you do some more of their songs on the channel.
NUFAN’s last album, The Feel Good Record of the year is a masterclass in songwriting and amazing melodies and harmonies. One of my favorite ever, Still on daily repeat.
I heard NUFAN for the first time in '95. Fell in love with the songs straight away. Tony Sly was an incredible songwriter. So very sorely missed. What a band!
One of my favorite bass players. I hadn't really listen to them til this album. Guttermouths bass player told me to check them out if I wanted a bass player to impress me with finger style to watch them. Been a fan since, one of the most heartbreaking endings of a band. R.I.P. Tony PS . His TH-cam has covers he plays. Alot of maiden!
You can call them NO USE. Or “New Fan”(NU FAN) This band meant SO MUCH to me as a teenager and early 20’s. Going back and listening to their early albums all the way up to this record brings back so many amazing memories. I can still taste the beer and the weed. I still adore this band. R.I.P. Tony Sly.
RIP Tony. He was such a phenomenal songwriter. Great sense of melody and structure. Another contemporary that Fat Mike will openly tell you he was inspired by.
My friends and I use to cover this song among many others you’ve been analysing on your channel but, by far, this one is one very near and dear to my heart, NUFAN and Tony’s writing always hit different. Matt’s and Jesse Buglione’s finger playing was the reason why our bass player decided to give up the pick and man it payed off (he’s one hell of a musician now). Now we’re all over the world but every time we get the chance to get together we always end up playing this song on acoustic and will do for the rest of our lives. The lyrics are engraved in my mind. You’ve got a great channel and I’m always hesitant to comment because, you know, social media (plus English is not my first language and my grammar is awful) but credit where it’s due: you’re doing great justice to punk rock and will forever be grateful for the you introducing to this wonderful powerful music with great messages to the world. Thank you. PS: Lagwagon’s “give it back” has a really cool bass line played by Jesse. Edit: I just realized you did check it and I did watch 🤦♂️😅
Tony Sly was a poet, I can’t think of a better songwriter in this genre. NUFAN was and is the pinnacle of pure songwriting I miss Tony’s influence on the genre. I could only imagine what he would be writing about now in his “later” years. RIP Tony Sly
Matt Riddle is arguably the best bassist I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, seeing live and studying for years on end. Definitely deep dive this legendary bassist!
Chris Shiflett used to play guitar in NUFAN, but had left to join the Foo Fighters a couple years before this album was recorded. With Matt Riddle and the Shiflett brothers, there are some interesting connections between Face to Face, NUFAN and Foo Fighters.
Tony Sly almost assuredly wrote the guitar and vocals prior to Matt writing his bass elements. Tony was one of (if not the) greatest song writer of our genre and its truly a shame he was lost at such a young as. The songs he wrote for his daughters still make me cry when I hear them knowing he's gone while he left beautiful messages they can always listen to.
Nice to see OG Matt Riddle getting some love. One of my favorite musicians. I've seen him rock live with a few different bands over the years and he's good. I've listened to him so much over the years that I probably even started to rip a few of his little signature bass licks in my own playing style. Tony Sly was such a good songwriter, but having Matt in the band made NUFAN extra special in my eyes.
No Use is one or the most important bands to me growing up. Very fortunate, I was able to see them live a few times back in the day. Look forward to seeing more reactions to their amazingly beautiful music. RIP Tony Sly.
Feel good record of the year is the peak of pop punk! Such a perfect album. Tony's last album for No use. It deserves an entire listen through. Perfect perfect perfect album. What a wonderful song writer. Died way too soon
Ever since I heard "Carousel" in high school, I've had a love for melodic top string bass lines. So, this NUFAN bassline was right up my alley. Top string bass melodies like these (though it's kinda tone dependent) have such a rich and warm sound to them. I don't know if you've already reacted to them, but I'd recommend you check out the track "Still" by "Rufio." If you wanna hear a great melodic bassline that really helps to set up the song, this track has got it.
Thanks for diving into this NUFAN jam! Matt Riddle has a knack for perfectly filling in those spaces in between the other instruments and as you’ve pointed out in past videos, almost act as a lead or compliment / harmonize the vocals. I find that some of the best pop-punk / skate punk bands (bad religion, nofx, lagwagon, nufan, useless id, alkaline trio, etc) often do this and do it freakin well. Incredible content my friend. Keep at it!
This record was constantly on rotation for me back in the 2000s when I was living in California. This song in particular was always on in my car when I was trekking around in the summer of '02.
The weird thing is that Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters guitarist) was the guitarist for NUFAN when Matt Riddle (original Face to Face bassist) left Face to Face to join NUFAN - and the bassist who replaced Riddle in Face to Face was Chris Shiflett’s brother, Scott. I clearly remember being baffled by this fact when Scott told me about it when I met him after a F2F show in 1996.
Seeing this come up in my feed really hit me a series of emotions. A few months ago, one of my closest friends passed away and we used to go on 4-hour road trips together to so No Use. Some good memories, but dang those lyrics: "His songs wouldn't just touch you They would punch you in the eye" -I'm So Sorry Tony by NOFX RIP Tony Sly And RIP Jim S
I miss Tony Sly. He made some amazing music that i still listen to today. Either "On the Outside" or "International You Day" are my favourite song, depending what mood I'm in, as they are polar opposites in the sentiment behind each one.
Omg I was literally playing this bass intro 5 minutes before I noticed you uploaded a video of it. This is my go to warm up exercise song to get the fingers moving. It also works slightly modified and played as if its a scale. Never forget Tony Sly.
This whole damn record changed the way I view music as a whole. It was the first album I actually was hooked by every single song, by every single lyric and every single riff. It still holds up amazingly, NUFAN was such a talented group of musicians. RIP Tony, miss you, I hope you're doing well.
Your comment about "Vocal Groove" is spot on. Among a great many other signature tricks, the particular way Tony Sly would allign his sylables to the beat could make a chorus so powerfull and catchy. Not a great bass track, but the chorus in "There will Be Revenge" is probably the most head bopping thing I've ever heard.
Matt played bass on the first two Face to Face records, Don't Turn Away and Big Choice, as well as the Over It EP. I'd recommend the last track from Over It called Not Enough (th-cam.com/video/vMoO-ej99Dc/w-d-xo.html). He also played bass for Pulley on their first album Esteem Driven Engine. I think you'd enjoy this album. Four Walls is my Bass pick for this one but I also love She, No Defense, and Silver Tongued Devil. As a side note, Pulley was formed by Scott Radisnky when he left Ten Foot Pole due to them not wanting to deal with his MLB schedule (he was a pitcher for the White Sox at the time).
