Remember much of Jimmy's dislike towards Howard was rooted in the assumption that it was Howard that tried to keep Jimmy out of HHM, which we later learn was Chuck's doing
Howard´s character development throughout the show is so interesting. At first you hate him, then you don´t care about him, then you sort of like him. He´s like a robot, a man from a magazine and yet there´s something so human about him. Both dick and a good guy. It´s just interesting to me.
He's a really interesting character because he's the only top billed actor on the cast whose character's home life we don't see. We see scenes of Jimmy, Kim, Mike, Gus, Nacho etc, but Howard is always a feature of other people's stories. Makes it harder to judge what he's been up to
Christopher Marlowe The first season it's set up to look like he's holding Jimmy back from his full potential, when really it's his brother. This current season he's not necessarily an antagonist, but he does act like a sort of 'enemy' from Jimmy's perspective.
He's mad at Howard because of his "real" reaction to Chuck's death. Chuck was Howard's very dear friend and his death, as well as the fallout of Jimmy's insurance meddling, tore him apart. In contrast Jimmy's last interaction with Chuck was Chuck saying he never cared about Jimmy which hurt Jimmy more than the actual death. So he sees all these people who Chuck actually respected and cared for upset by his death and Jimmy doesn't "get to do" that because of his relationship with Chuck when he really has more "right" than anyone. He's once again been left as the outsider and he hates that. Howard is an easy target for him. This carries into S5 where Howard has confronted his grief and grown as a person while Jimmy has hardly acknowledged he's in pain at all. Jimmy resents this.
I think it's another example of Jimmy not thinking through the consequences of his actions. He set out to get revenge on Chuck, but now he realizes he's also endangered the firm, and he's trying to undo it. Like when he undid the hatred for that woman in the retirement home.
"There you go! Use that." Love that line. It shows that Jimmy was in fact trying to get Howard mad as a way to help him. Sadness accomplishes nothing. Anger really gets shit done.
That was Jimmy’s intention, and yes anger does get stuff done, as Jimmy proves… But sadness and diving in through ones pain can make a person come out the other side better for it, which Howard understands, but Jimmy never understood it until the end

Jimmy and Howard have the weirdest and most underrated dynamic in this show imo. Jimmy is in his early fifties ? I know that Bob Odenkirk was about 55 when the show started but it still kinda makes sense that he would play a man in his mid thirties due to the BB universe timeline.
I like how after this scene, we see Howard later on talking about how the firm is doing better than ever, and even offers Jimmy a job working there. I like to think that Jimmy's tough love was the push Howard needed to get him back on track to becoming a success.
That’s what I was thinking also cuz jimmy has been knocked down by far worse with so few resources and help but he keeps on fighting. And he has been motivated by proving people wrong and that is what he does Howard here
I don’t see it that way at all. I see jimmy negating his feelings by belittling Howard’s. And when Howard does pull the firm back together jimmy is secretly resentful. This is basically why jimmy goes on a campaign of terror against Howard. Howard was nice enough to offer jimmy a job but it only made jimmy angrier because jimmy wanted to distance himself from his brother in every way at this point. It’s self sabotage to an art form.
The real magic is what Howard didn’t say. Following “Fuck you, Jimmy” is the implicit “I’m an amazing lawyer.” It’s like the feeling of “no one shit talks my country but me.” Howard was surrounded by yes men. He needed someone to reignite him. He was probably thinking to himself over and over again that he was a shitty lawyer. When Jimmy says it, it reminded him that he was just in a bad situation. The confident Howard we see in 607 saying he’ll overcome anything and land on his feet is the direct result of this scene.
I like how Jimmy was still emotionally attached enough to HHM here that he wanted to rouse Howard out of his depression by getting him angry and awake. Maybe deep down Jimmy didn't want to see his brother's firm go down the tubes.
I laughed so hard at this scene, Jimmy was actually lighting that fire inside of howard ... exactly what he needed to hear ... that last bit where Howard looks at him with complete shock as he tells him he's a shitty lawyer but a good sales man and the follow up "Fuck you Jimmy" ... Perfect
It's funny because early in the series Howard is kind of tailored to be perceived as a villain and an antagonistic character. There is a line in the 1st or 2nd series where Howard says something to Jimmy like "It's not always about the money, it's about what's in your heart" and the impression one gets at the time given how Howard carries himself and how he is portrayed is that he is being smarmy and mocking Jimmy. I haven't seen season 5 yet though so who knows.
It’s not “implied” it was outright stated that chuck told Howard not to bring jimmy onto the team cuz Chuck hates the idea of slippin jimmy becoming a lawyer at his firm
Season 4 might very well go down as my personal favorite season. The show took a breather after season 3 and before season 5. It's solid and came out during a hard time I was going through. This show is what people would refer to as "MY SHIT!"
Season 4 is my favorite as well. I think it's the best balance between the levity of the earlier seasons and the darkness of the later ones. Also the most perfect distillation of Better Call Saul's "hangout" vibe, what with Jimmy's year off and Mike's lab construction project. I also think the characters were at their juciest and most complex here. I love the subversive way the writers had Jimmy reacting to Chuck's death, compartmentalizing, off-loading his guilt, doing all sorts of weird, contradictory things, like the character was operating on emotions that not even he understood, all building up to that brilliant, brilliant final episode where he decides to go full time with Saul Goodman.
From my opinion, if Chuck was not there to orchestrate Howard from behind to down play Jimmy, these two would be a very good friend, Howard would totally support Jimmy and see Jimmy’s potential, and Jimmy wouldn’t spent years hating Howard.
I really love how this show has the confidence to leave things unsaid. At this point in the show, it's not really clear what Jimmy thinks of Chuck but you can tell what he says to Howard is parroting his brother. Does Jimmy say this to genuinely help Howard? Does he feel guilty Chuck isn't around and tries to replicate what he would say to make up for it? Or is it just another opportunity for Jimmy to be a performer and impersonate someone he's not? This whole season had so much uncertainty. Really love what the show has become.
I strongly disagree. Chuck would never say something like this to Howard and definitely not in that manner. He never cared about how people feel, all he cared about were impressions. He never said the things people needed to hear at the moment. If Chuck was around and healthy (both mentally and physically) at this point, he´d take full cotrol over the firm and sideline Howard. Jimmy is different. Deep down, he´s a good guy who feels guilt and has conscience. That´s why when he sees Howard so low, he remember the good Howard did for him and tries to get him back on his feet.
@@ArthurAugustyn lmao projecting much? You are obviously the one who understands nothing about the show as all you do in your comment as ask a bunch of dumb questions while saying nothing of substance. There’s no way in hell Jimmy would parrot Chuck at this point in the show, he very clearly wants to rid himself of everything the name McGill stands for. He simply tells Howard exactly what he thinks and also exactly what Howard needed to hear (something Chuck never would do and was never even able to do). As his choice of words shows, he definitely doesn’t see Howard as a friend but he has at least enough respect for him to bring him to salvage what’s left of the firm. As the guy above said, he took a quick moment to remember what good Howard did for him. The only thing that’s truly left unanswered is whether he only does it solely out of good will for Howard or whether he also wants to save something that Chuck helped build. Again, you’re the dumbass.
while jimmy does come across as insensitive in this scene since he didnt allow chuck's passing to affect him as greatly, I do like how it actually really did help Howard here lol
Howard never really did anything to merit Jimmy's ire. Jimmy displaced all of his anger for Chuck into Howard, he's the physical embodiment of what Jimmy thought he was entitled to, but was never built to be like.
You're conveniently forgetting the scene where Jimmy wanted to settle and get his money from the sandpiper case, and Howard called him gollum for it along with other things No, it still doesn't justify what Jimmy did to Howard, but don't even think for a second that Howard is in any way fully innocent here
Howard was a straight up dick to Jimmy during Season 1, and in Season 2 he treated Kim badly due to Jimmy messing up at Davis and Maine. I realize Howard was actually being a dick to Jimmy on behalf of Chuck in Season 1, but he was still complicit, and honestly Howard had more control of HHM at that point (although due to Howard’s reverence for Chuck he sided with him). None of that justifies how Jimmy treated Howard in seasons 5 and especially 6, but I’m not surprised that Jimmy doesn’t think all that fondly of him. By the time Howard started trying to make amends with Jimmy, a lot of the decency that Jimmy had in him had eroded.
I really hope Howard plays a pivotal role in Season 6 to bring the series to a close. Howard is Jimmy’s link back to Chuck and would be a great way to tie the entire series together now considering Chuck has been dead for two seasons. Howard is a lot like Chuck’s ghost that still haunts Jimmy, and he needs to deal with that.
Jimmy was being a good friend to Howard here. It's what he needed to hear, it's too bad at his core Jimmy is an insecure, spiteful human being and Howard's honest leaps towards progression made him feel inferior
This scene also suggests how delusional Jimmy can be. He's beginning to project his own self-loathing and shame about his his brother's death onto Howard, and he's overly crediting himself with the referral of a client to HHM - which is only to service the will of a deceased woman.
Season 6 spoilers below: I really feel like this is the moment that helped turn Howard around. He is the lowest he has ever been and it's quite ironic that Jimmy was the push for Howard to turn his life around. Which makes events of season 6 all the more painful, because Howard got put down by the same guy that lifted him up.
SPOILERS Probably the nicest thing Jimmy ever did for Howard, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it played a large part in Howard offering Jimmy a job in Season 5. Too bad Jimmy was too bitter to accept it.
There's something outside all the components. More than the sum of its parts kinda thing. More than the writing, acting, pacing, camera work, lighting, production design. More than all of it. I just keep watching scenes from this show even though in so many ways a scene like this would be mundane, possibly even boring in any other context.
Not necessarily historical stuff (although that wouldn't fail to get eyes glued to the show) but more of him outside the office...his home life etc. They could definitely do something there...

Such a great scene between such talented men. And it always raised an interesting question for me. Who is tougher? Jimmy who seemingly has no remorse even though he played a key part in his brother's demise OR Howard who takes all the blame and pulls through. Insane series.
Howard without a doubt, Jimmy has remorse, it's there all the time, he just projects it into everything else, like the time the bar almost didn't accept him where he projected onto Kim, or the whole lightning bolts speech. 2:17 is the most perfect f you I ever heard.
Season 4 might very well go down as my personal favorite season. The show took a breather after season 3 and before season 5. It's solid and came out during a hard time I was going through. This show is what people would refer to as "MY SHIT!"
Asked me during the pandemic
@@timothyha2854 say what say what!?!?!?!
@@jeromychavez6121 saved me during 2020 lockdowns. Was a fantastic watch
@@baaaldur damn I never thought about season 4 that way. Thanks fam
“One little set back” that hits different now….
I always liked how Hamlin intentionally matched his (predominantly) purple neckties with the decor of his office.
From my opinion, if Chuck was not there to orchestrate Howard from behind to down play Jimmy, these two would be a very good friend, Howard would totally support Jimmy and see Jimmy’s potential, and Jimmy wouldn’t spent years hating Howard.
I've waited so long to hear Howard say the f word.
This was Jimmy trying to light a fire under Howard's ass because Jimmy knows Howard is above giving up.
Pretentious ass comment
@@nomongosinthaworld no you're just a dumb ass. Lmao owned "idkman" yeah no shit silly.
Howard was actually a really good guy
2:16 His "Fuck You" kills me everytime XD
This truly makes me sad how they took season 6 and treating Howard
One of my favorite scenes. Such powerful drama and raw emotion.
Unironically a great motivational speech, Jimmy re-lit the fire in Howard here
while jimmy does come across as insensitive in this scene since he didnt allow chuck's passing to affect him as greatly, I do like how it actually really did help Howard here lol
The short pause is what ties it together. It like Howard can't believe what Jimmy just said and needs a moment to process before saying fuck you
One of my favorite scenes
Howard looks like he hasn't slept in a week. He's up against the ropes, which is a very unusual place for him. His smooth facade is slipping.
Howard never really did anything to merit Jimmy's ire. Jimmy displaced all of his anger for Chuck into Howard, he's the physical embodiment of what Jimmy thought he was entitled to, but was never built to be like.
You're conveniently forgetting the scene where Jimmy wanted to settle and get his money from the sandpiper case, and Howard called him gollum for it along with other things
No, it still doesn't justify what Jimmy did to Howard, but don't even think for a second that Howard is in any way fully innocent here
Howard was a straight up dick to Jimmy during Season 1, and in Season 2 he treated Kim badly due to Jimmy messing up at Davis and Maine.
A brilliantly observed assessment.
@@peacefanatic3590 lol and Howard even threw money at him and told him to come back to HHM with the beggar's cup🤣
I am sure after this Howard will get his shit together and brings HHM to it's former glory. Sure, nothing bad is going to happen to him.
Probably the last half-decent thing Jimmy did to Howard.
Yeah, Jimmy was a tremendous ass to Howard.

I really hope Howard plays a pivotal role in Season 6 to bring the series to a close. Howard is Jimmy’s link back to Chuck and would be a great way to tie the entire series together now considering Chuck has been dead for two seasons. Howard is a lot like Chuck’s ghost that still haunts Jimmy, and he needs to deal with that.
boy do i have a news for you
Howard and Chuck are both ghosts now.
Well you weren't wrong!
I can't explain how well I love this scene.
It always amazed me how patient and forgiving Howard was to Jimmy for decades. He is definitely the better man
THE DEFINITION OF TOUGH LOVE
Jimmy’s most kind interaction with Howard is also the one where he calls him a shitty lawyer
Hearing Howard say fuck you, you can definitely tell he's motivated now. XD
At least he still had his hair in the end
Here in 2022 and that setback line hit different now
This is the moment Huel became reasonably happy
This scene was so funny, I loved it
Immediately After Saul said "There you go, Use that!" both Saul and Howard knew Saul was right.
I love how Howard lays into that f bomb! Such inflection out the gate.
"Your a shitty lawyer howard" then just walks off without the compliment xD
That good ol F you caught me by surprise lol
Wow. Heartbreaking.
Nothing beats a good f-bomb out of nowhere
Jimmy was being a good friend to Howard here. It's what he needed to hear, it's too bad at his core Jimmy is an insecure, spiteful human being and Howard's honest leaps towards progression made him feel inferior
This scene also suggests how delusional Jimmy can be. He's beginning to project his own self-loathing and shame about his his brother's death onto Howard, and he's overly crediting himself with the referral of a client to HHM - which is only to service the will of a deceased woman.
This is the definition of tough love
2:18 “fuck you Jimmy.”
You welcome guys 😂
Season 6 spoilers below:
I really feel like this is the moment that helped turn Howard around. He is the lowest he has ever been and it's quite ironic that Jimmy was the push for Howard to turn his life around. Which makes events of season 6 all the more painful, because Howard got put down by the same guy that lifted him up.
This is the exact moment that walter jr did not receive breakfast

Probably the nicest thing Jimmy ever did for Howard, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it played a large part in Howard offering Jimmy a job in Season 5.
They need to give Howard more backstory...
Not necessarily historical stuff (although that wouldn't fail to get eyes glued to the show) but more of him outside the office...his home life etc. They could definitely do something there...
@@rampageclover9788 would be cool to have a flashback scene with him and Slippin Jimmy, maybe when Chuck was tutoring him for the bar and they met or something like that. Just to see how a Howard at the bottom and Slippin Jimmy would interact
And Jimmy supported and encouraged Howard every day forward.
I lost it when Hamlin said "Fuck you, Jimmy" 😂

Howard was far too decent with Jimmy
@@zekeiwa5837 Howard is still a professional, as a socially capable person and as a lawyer surrounded by witnesses he knows an argument wouldn't help anything - this is that yes or no answer he's been waiting around for. He's come out the other end of his crisis with this "namaste" thing going which tries to avoid confrontation, and he's smart enough (and a professional arguer) to know Jimmy isn't arguing *for* anything he's just ranting.

Howard got hit hard, but he didn't bottle up all those emotions and he didnt have any more baggage after some seasons
