    *The ironic part is, Jimmy was being honest in his first interview. But they didn't accept him because they said he seemed "insincere." So the next time Jimmy faked it all, told them what they wanted to hear, and they accepted him. In short, the system made him become a liar.*

      I'd say that he wasn't completely honest on the first interview, because is obvious that he didn't acknowledged Chuck because he just wasn't ready to do it, so he gets pushed into this situations between his feelings/grief and his goals as a lawyer and the kind of person he wants to be, and the kind of life he will live from now on.
      In the end he gets cornered, and maybe some of the words he spoke really could've expressed really well how he was feeling, but these words didn't hold the weight that they should after Jimmy ended up coming to terms with the fact that the complicated relationship with his brother ended on such a tragic note, in the end basically he was pushed/forced to skip steps from the process and now it's on a constant fase of negation or lack of acknowledgment to the suffering that the loss of his brother has caused him to have.

    Jimmy got totally screwed up by Chuck's final words to him. His entire life had a purpose - to make Chuck proud of him. And for Chuck to die with the words "Truthfully, you never mattered all that much to me" put a hole in Jimmy's life and purpose where now he is only out for himself. He has realized, I can't live my life to please anyone else. I never will be what they want. It's all about me now. And the writers have done a brilliant job [in my estimation] at depicting how a sweet guy can transform into a *Saul Goodman.*

      Jimmy keeps mentioning people being saved from fires in his concs, as the ultimate show of a good person and a hero. Whatever he says, it's obvious he's not over Chuck, and the flashback just showed that Chuck and Jimmy loved each other, it was just toxic, because Chuck loved him, but in a "you're beneath me" way, in a "I'll always have to take care of you" way. It's just sad because if both of them had been better to each other, things may have gone another way. If Jimmy had cleaned up his act sooner, if Chuck's parents may have listenedto him or loved him (it'sobvious that Chuck feels his parents never loved him as much as Jimmy, no matter how good he was), if Chuck had being able to give Jimmy more of a chance, things may have gone better. Jimmy breaks because the world doesn't allow him to change to a good person, no matter how much he tries. Chuck breaks because he will never be liked or loved, no matter how much he tries to be "good". It's a tragedy.

    • @AuditoryStorytelling
      @AuditoryStorytelling 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Well... that scene only showed that Jimmy and Chuck had one drunk night where they were tolerant and cool with each other. But their relationship as a whole wasn't loving. Especially when you have an older and younger brother with no parents around... the older brother has quite an influence on the esteem of the younger. And as Dr. Phil would say... "It takes 1000 at-a-boys to erase one you're-not-good-enough". And Chuck gave Jimmy tons of you're-not-good-enoughs to bury Jimmy in a bitter grave marked as *Saul Goodman.*

      @TheTolister 6 ปีที่แล้ว +522

      I read on the internet that Jimmy really died in the scene where he starts crying in his car. I think that's accurate. I think that it was Jimmy McGill the whole time or the most of the time in those first three seasons of BCS. He was a problematic maybe, but he had a good heart. It wasn't Saul Goodman at all. And this last season it was like fight between Jimmy and Saul, like who takes control over him. What we saw when he breaks down in his car after he talked with the girl, was final, or one of final glimps of Jimmy McGill. And than, the whole next scene with him and Kim, was Saul already, the fake, amoral and egocentric guy from Breaking Bad. Or maybe it's not exactly the same version of Saul from Breaking Bad right at the end of the 4th season of BCS but he's on the way there.

      Deepskies that's some deep shit

    • @TheTolister
      @TheTolister 6 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Yeah of course. Jimmy's "death" could be rather symbolic, or something like that. I would say that the crying scene in the car had it's deeper meaning. He was "Jimmy" at the moment because he was sincere, he felt sorry for himself. It was no time for his cons, or his acting, nobody was there and he could be without his mask at the moment. "Saul" persona was embodiment of his self that always could persuade people, the person which was full of himself. The part of his character in which he was making fake or exaggerative emotions to manipulate with people was him in his element. And he always did this, but this time, it was too amoral and only for his goals. I would think of the show that it has a main character with two characters inside him. Breaking Bad had Walt/Heisenberg, and Better Call Saul has Jimmy/Saul. Of course it's more complex than that. It's rather symbolic meaning.

      I think both his initial bar hearing and his appeal share very interesting contrasts. His initial bar hearing, he shows sincerity- with the exception of his feelings to Chuck, because he suppressed all of his emotions related to Chuck. However, he still (likely) thinks he doesn’t care, so it’s at least accurate to what he believes now. His appeal, on the other hand, is not accurate to what he believes, but is true to what he did believe prior. He once saw Chuck exactly like this, and would describe him as so. These were his real feelings at some point, as you said.

However the only time he cried was when it was all about him. About how realizing how he would never be good enough to be respected by the lawyering world. So he finally chose to embrace his alter ego identity, Saul Goodman and do it all for himself. He played Kim and us.

And I think in part he did, I think he meant what he said about Chuck, the things he said, but used that to manipulate people. Some people are saying Jimmy was ALWAYS Saul, always a bad person, but I doubt it. I think Jimmy has a big heart, and actually cared about helping others, he makes it clear he is passionate about lawyering when he is trying to get his license back. But he always had this crook inside of him, though it's not who he is, just a part of him that he always tried to keep in check, and who nobody believed could actually do it. That's when he decided "I'm gonna be who you think I am, why try anyways if you will never believe I can change?" and then he turned into Saul Goodman.

This use of lighting was used a lot in Breaking Bad also especially when it was unclear whether the actual character was speaking or whether it was the alter-ego. Brilliant writing and filming.

    I think this was the straw that broke the camel's back for Kim. You could see how proud she was that Jimmy was finally admitting his emotions for Chuck and accepting what happened, and in a heartbeat he makes clear that it was all an act, that any trace of the goodhearted friend she had was gone.

  • @squib3100
    @squib3100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I feel like Jimmy really IS being, in part, sincere in this moment. It's true that all he ever wanted was to make Chuck proud, to have his approval and be able to truly stand eye-to-eye with his brother. And in his own way, Jimmy does believe that he's never going to be 'enough', that he cannot be good and everyone will hold him back if he tries--it's the root of his apathy. I think Saul Goodman/Slippin' Jimmy is his route of coping. He doesn't have to go through the complicated process of mourning a loved one if it's all an act, if he is truly in control of his emotions and using that fact to game the situation. He does not need to grapple with the fact that Chuck wanted nothing more than to hurt Jimmy with his parting words. He doesn't even need to process his own guilt in the situation. If he can stomp out those emotions, take all that hurt and bury it down and use it to feel like he's in control of them, as opposed to staring into them head-on like a mirror, then it's all good, man.

    On a surface level he's wrapping lies and truth together, but on a deeper level he's mixing general feelings with personal feelings, and in that context nothing feels like false. He couldnt live with the lie his whole “electricity-allergy” came back that night because he couldnt live with himself. he went nuts. But jimmy believed him because he wouldnt expect chuck to lie about that or to lie in general. So jimmys whole hate towards his brother is built on a lie that no one knows of, only us.

  • @Deepskies268

    In the first hearing Jimmy lied because of his denialism and suppression of his feelings regarding Chuck but he considered himself being honest for the same reason, as he was very disconnected from himself at least regarding Chuck. In the second hearing Jimmy was honest because Kim had shown him the right way but he considered himself doing the mother of all scams. He chose to become Saul to finally get rid of Chuck and his kind, who he has come to believe will never accept him as one of them. So actually when he talks about how he admired Chuck and wanted to be like him he was telling the truth and lying both at the same time. Because when he told that, he already had given up any ambitions to become "moral and respected" to finally get rid of Chuck whose envy and hate haunted Jimmy throughout the season.

      Rational PoC he wasn’t fully honest, they wanted him to talk about chuck in the first one, when they asked him who influenced him to go Into law. He started law to impress chuck and Kim, he goes into that law library after seeing Kim all impressed with chuck’s law acumen. And he was always trying to gain chuck’s approval. But all he could say was “university of American Samoa, go land crabs!”
      So part of the 2nd hearing was true but that whole “but I can try to be like chuck” and everything after was just a bunch of theatrics

    • @maniacmasturbator2411
      @maniacmasturbator2411 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rational PoC it shows in the scene that he went to the law library after Kim was impressed with chuck’s law acumen, but he also wanted chuck’s approval. They showed a flashback, I think the first season, when jimmy told chuck about passing the bar and asking him “are you proud of me?” and chuck says yes, obviously insincere.
      And then later when they were arguing, jimmy said “I thought you were proud of me (for passing the bar)”, and chuck tells him “I was proud of you when you were in the mail room”.
      Because chuck just has to be in such a higher position than jimmy to feel good about himself.
      Jimmy obviously wasn’t influenced to go into law by the university of American Samoa. When he gave that answer, you can see the board’s reaction shift, mainly on that one woman.

    also I love there's always a moment halfway or near the end one of Jimmy's speeches when you can realize if it's a performance or a genuine moment. I think Bob Odenkirk is very good at this bit because often Jimmy's act starts with something that looks like genuine emotions he's working with, and then when he hooks people he jams it up a notch to fully deliver the blow of what he wants others to do. so you can feel the switch in Jimmy as he builds the improv or the performance depending on the audience he's working for.

He may have chosen to live in insincire act as Saul Goodman, he may have chosen to be a criminal for his own selfish good, but he's not a murderer, he is not a psychopath or sociopath. He's a broken man who's ideals were broken when he was backstabbed by his own role model - Chuck.
