I saw Geoff Bodine win the last race at the old Trenton Speedway in 1980. He won the 200 mile NASCAR sanctioned modified race over Richie Evans in his famous #99. Hell of a close finish too.

Geoff Bodine My favorite for years in the late 80's giving it back to Earnhardt! "New Yorker" As myself and in the Army stationed at Ft. Stewart Ga and only really gone to races in person at local DIRT Tracks in Central Ny before. Going to Daytona, Darlington, "Hot" Atlanta and cheering on #5 yellow and white car Levi Garrett car. OOOOOOOOOOO what a time!!!! Before that I only saw NASCAR on TV. Since, I have been to Charolette, Loudon, and yearly to the Glen. Got to get to Bristol and the "Dega", yet though. Love the interview, Herm! THANK YOU!
I'm from the Chemung area so Geoff was my guy. I moved to Mooresville in 2002 and ran into him at Duckworth and had a great visit. He was one hell of a driver.

I used to feel the G. Bodine was over arrogant but I had tons of respect for that man! He was a constant threat and front runner for years!
He was especially tough on a flat track. And look at the number of different teams he won for.
Geoff Bodine is a legend. The wreck that he had in the truck series was scary. I remember when he drove the #64 car in 2009. The Bodine Brothers were amazing drivers.
Geoff Bodine’s legacy as Good as His Prime was His legacy is still Safety .

Great listen. I'm 40 years old "kid" from western NY and always thought highly of Geoffrey and the rest of the Bodines. Having someone like Geoff win in Winston cup that came from the north east as a modified driver to go south and win some big cup races and at that time beat the southerners meant something.

Geoff Bodine was my first favorite driver when I was 4 years old. So roughly 1986. Loved that #5 Levi Garrett car!
Hey Kenny, the Guinness book of records is 55 modified wins in (One Season).
Bodine had elite pure driving talent!
He could win at any track from Martinsville(4) and North Wilkesboro(3) to Pocono(3) Dover, Charlotte and Michigan to Daytona where he dominated most of the race in 1986. Has four road course wins, Riverside, Sonoma and two wins at The Glen.
When I was a teen used to go to Lancaster, Spencer, Fulton (my fave!), the occasional Oswego Mod races all the time with my father watch the modifieds. Dad was personal friends with Don Whalen who drove the #05 always a Candy Cane paint job. I was a big Evans fan, my brother loved Geoff, my sister was a R. Treichler fan and Dad, Don Whalen and Troyer. So was like we had this inside family feud as all those drivers so talented and BOY HOWDY they put on show! We'd a slot car track pretend we were our favorite drivers.
When Geoff took to the Cup Cars he became my Dad's favorite and mine of course that after Maynard Troyers Daytona cartwheeling.
Hopefully Geoff read this because... Geoff the racing you did back then in the Modified Sportsman cars was so intense to watch week after week. Geoff, Ritchie, Maynard were really a BIG part of my growing up and our family watching those guys putting on the ragged edge week after week. So intense! Great times for my family, best of times really.

@@jackstahlbush Funny you mention Dave Nicholas. My Father had tons of photo slides of the racing. So I'd scanned a bunch and made prints. I was getting rid of some of them at a yard sale some eight years ago thereabouts. Lady across the street often has guy stop over and he comes to sale and pawing through the prints.
Says, "You know this is?" and I told him yeah! Turns out to be Dave!
He's the one the one that told me about that after race "Get Togethers" at a place called The Dutch Mill back then. Drivers, crews etc get together and blast down some beers.
@@jackstahlbush Remember the big block Chevy/Ford V8's sound like thunder. Bodine and a another named Guy Chartrand ran Chrysler Hemi's as I recall and wow they sounded so different.

Awesome Herman, the truck crash down the fence at daytona, you are lucky you can walk at all Geoff, and the Pocono race on Hoosiers kicked everybody's ass, always been a fan.
I went to Daytona 500 in 1985 so hoping to see Geoff drive that Levi Garrett Chevy to victory lane..Nobody was beating Awesome Bill in that Ford Thunderbird on that day though..Fast forward to 1986 when Geoff won i was in the USAF pulling gate guard duty as a newly minted 1 striper..I called my shift supervisor SMSGT Walls asked him if i could get off at noon to watch the race..He had an absolute aneurysm over it and tore me a new you know what..Got back to the SP dorms just as Geoff was driving to Victory Lane and i started running up and down the hall screaming 'holy sh*t,holy sh*t,holy sh*t"..Man a day i will never forget..

Geoff surely remembers the race at Daytona when Earnheart overshot his pit lane with just laps to go and Bodine was in the right place to take the win.
Bodine’s truck wreck at the Daytona 250 in 2000 is still one of the most horrific accident ever witnessed. It’s a miracle he survived that…
I was a big fan of Geoff. Was sad when he quit driving. Glad to see he's still going strong.

Herman is overblowing the Yankee thing here. Been northerners in NASCAR since the beginning. Fred Lorenzen was from Illinois, Ralph Moody was from Massachusetts, Smokey Yunick was Pennsylvania, Tiny Lund was from Iowa, Marvin Panch was from Wisconsin, Carl Kiekhaefer was from Wisconsin, Richard Brooks was from California and on and on and on. Heck, even Bobby and Donnie Allisons' parents were from NY and moved to Miami where Bobby and Donnie were born. NASCAR has been national on the inside for a very long time.
I was a fan of both Geoff Bodine and Earnhardt..I worked for guy who use to help a guy with his Racecar. When that guy got out of racing Geof Bodine bought his car. This guy raced at Oswego.
I've been waiting for this one. Great interview, Kenny.

That was a great interview. My dad raced against Geoff in the early 70's.
My family use to race Mopars at our local Connecticut circle tracks, watched all those old time Short track modified racers Geoff, Ronnie and Kenny Bouchard, Carl Bugs Stevens, George Moose Hewwitt. Fred Desarro, Eddie Flemke, Reggie Ruggerio it was a great time to be a kid and involved in that type of racing, plus you could build your own engines and build most of your car and be competitive 😊

Geoff Bodine drove one of my vintage TQ’s I own #30 at Pocono Raceway… a few years ago.
Herm, I live right down in Osteen below the New Symrna track and I am never home during speed weeks! Well next year I am going to be home and see you at the tracks! Great interview from two of the greats!
Kenny one year Geoff won so many races, he won the Modified Championship at Stafford Speedway before the season even ended, Geoff showed up the next week with the 180 degree headers sticking out the passenger side door and an automatic transmission, think that was very late 70s.
Racing dirt go karts in NY state in the late 70s some old timers used to ask us CT guys ,”how’s that Goff Bodine been runnin”
Watched Geoff race in Chemung when i was growing up.Glad and happy for his successful carreer.Always remember him and Dale going at it.Great racing back then.

I believe iroc was underrated especially in the 80s and 90s. Geoff did help build the best team in nascar history being that he was Ricks first full time drivers.

Talking about vintage... While at work today trying to figure out whose house we are going to watch opening weekend and what we will be eating and drinking. The question came up, Konch, who is your all time favorite driver, Im 63, I said Cale. That question started a fury of thought in my head. Joliet has been closed for way to long and last years race downtown, for me, was the best, even in the rain. If this makes sense, I love down town - I hate the city. Downtown has a lot of yuppies that just dont know what a hard days work is. They say the race made the city money.
Well, I came up with the idea - The bears are moving to the suburbs, that leaves Soldiers Field vacant.
That place holds like 65000 people. Why not bring racing back to the old girl.
My dad had taken me back in the day to watch racing at soldier field. Yes, they raced inside soldiers field way before LA Clash

The city has a freeway there now and has gone through another track as well before LVMS .
Craig Rd & The Speedrome have come & went and now We have 2 Cup Races at an amazing complex with a beautiful Bull Ring LVMS
Billy Harper even Won best paint scheme out at Riverside in 85 or 86 with that scheme but the sponsor was Unlce Billy’s SweetWater in the same calligraphy

Then His last scheme was an all orange red with white 5 & SweetWater and then He sold that ride & was done
That was around 87-88
That last ride was SO COOL
It was the newest updated body style at that time
It was like the Days of Thunder Rides the beginning of that time frame.

Geoff won the first Nascar race I ever went to - Michigan 400 - Weekend that Ernie Irvan crashed
Geoff beat Richie and won the 1973 Race of Champions Modified race at Trenton, N.J.
Another memory and I don't know if Geoff was there, probably. At Lancaster small short track Buffalo NY thereabouts way they'd a night where families kids get a ride around the track w/ a driver. I'd a go around w/ Evans you're just kinda packed in holding on to roll bar. Was like the crowning moment of life back then LOL. I got ride around with Don Whalen of course, my dads friend and then there was Troyer. He and Whalen, bunch of all buddies, I never knew at the time we come home go to bed and Dad go out to little bar quarter mile down the road and bunch of pound down beers. Anyways, I get in Troyer ride and he didn't exactly take it slow. OH MY GOSH. Here I am 12, 13 years old basically scared to say a word to any driver I'm more in reverence of them and whilst Troyer surely wasn't hot footing it was fast enough where I was holding the roll cage of dear life. I remember him Whalen and my father laughin' it up as my terror subsided.
I always wondered what was up with the "Geoffery" deal. Now i know.

It’s not too much of a stretch to say that Geoff Bodine helped to save Hendrick Motorsports. If they hadn’t won that spring 1984 Martinsville race, they would have shut down.
Geoff and Hendrick's team against Dale Earnhardt was the best rivalary.
Nah the best rivalry was David Pearson and Richard Petty. Finished 1-2 63 times, with Pearson winning 33 of them.
