Prior to the founding of the city of Ahmedabad, the original settlement’s name was Asaval. In 1411, Ahmed Shah I founded Ahmedabad which eventually subsumed Asaval.
JAMA MASJID AHMEDABAD
Jumma masjid Ahmedabad or Jami mosque was built in 1424 during the reign of Ahmed Shah I. It was probably the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent built in that period.
The main entrance is framed by two columns. They are the remains of two minarets (the shaking minarets) destroyed by the earthquake of 1819 and 1956. In the earthquake of 1819, the lofty minarets were reduced to half their height and became known as 'the shaking minarets'. The earthquake of 1956 destroyed the remaining columns.
SIDDI SAYED MOSQUE AHMEDABAD
This mosque is famed for its exquisite jail windows, spider web fine, depicting the intricate design and the beautifully carved ‘tree of life’ can be seen from the road that runs along the back of the mosque. This symbol has been adopted by IIM Ahmedabad as their official logo and it also serves as the unofficial symbol of Ahmedabad.

When you are in the part of old Ahmedabad, you cannot miss ‘dining with the dead’. Well yes, this restaurant located in the Lal Darwaja region has been built around a cemetery and you can literally have food in a graveyard! Food and services are up to the mark and don’t forget to try their variety of maska buns!!
