Upgrading front speakers and installing rear speakers in a 2010 Toyota Tacoma access cab

- After updating to an Atoto head unit and small amp, I was really disappointed with my stock speakers. After seeing what came out I am not surprised! Those poor pathetic old 6x9's, and "rear speakers". Notice how even speakers is in quotes. Normally the rear speakers are in the head liner, sorry I keep saying head rest, and are tiny. Luckily Toyota designed the doors to have speaker holes, just didn't put speakers in there for a lot of the years of production. So, with just a little cash, time, and parts you can do this easy upgrade too. On scale of hardness from 1-10 this is like a C. I decided to go with Infinity front and rear.
All the parts were purchased from Crutchfield or 3D printed.

3D Circle template for the sound holes, was a brilliant idea. Nicely done sir. I enjoyed your video.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it.
2nd generation Access cab Tacoma's only have speakers in the rear doors from 2005 to 2009. Those of us who have a 2010 through 2015 have the garbage tweeters in the headliner.
my 2007 access cab does have rear speakers in the suicide doors. The stock speakers actually sound great, but headunit finally took a crap. so doing my audio now. thanks for all the info!
11:36 a litttle late here but you could have kept the speaker harness where it was instead of running it inside the door. the bracket you got from crutch field has a square whole at the top for that very reason. im sure everything is still working fine but it's to keep the plug free of any water that may get into the door when it rains and stuff which could be a lot sometimes.
Good catch, and thanks for watching!
Currently driving my Dad's 2009 Tacoma Access Cab w/TRD Off-Road pkg. It was his baby. Lots of bells & whistles, but he kept the 6-spd manual. Just rolled over 50K last week. Doesn't have a premium stereo, or what's in there is as premium as it got? - I dunno. Getting an itch to upgrade it, at least to as much as he would've liked. Just discovered the crazy headliner "rear" tweeters. Started searching for info and found your v-jayo. Had no idea they had unused speaker locations in the rear doors!!! Like your style; I'm a JBL guy myself. Subscribed w/full bell. Think we may talk again in the future. 😉👍
Can you post a video on the wiring?
Is there a particular part of the wiring you want me to focus on, or am I too late to answer the question? Lol
I figured it out. I wanted to know the wire colors for left and right speakers on back of radio
why not just use license plate nylon retainers for those square holes...
Well, I have a 3D printer and didn’t have those, but mainly I didn’t think of those hahaha
Ok, I left my earlier comment after skimming through your v-jayo for the the stuff I was i was interested in. Now I'm taking a deep dive, and HOLY CRAP 4:53 - I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
Wow, nice! Only 50K! I would say this was an easy upgrade and is all behind panels, so you keep that stock look, but get WAY better sound, and from that time stamp, yeah gross right. They sound okay for stock, but once you see what you are working with over all it's a mess. Then the rear speakers made a huge difference. Next I have to go through and soundproof everything though. The back doors make a hollow sound that I don't like. Let me know how your project goes, and thanks for the sub!!!
Rear speakers are unnecessary. Actually it would mess with the sound's stereo imaging. Front door speaker setup is all you need for optimal sound quality.
After running this setup for a while, as long as my sub is off, you can definitely hear the rear speakers and they give added depth to the sound. Also I’ve found that if I use the dead peddle then my leg covers the sound from the 6x9, so the rear speakers help fill in that lost sounds.
