Thanks for the review and kind words! Here's an essay length follow-up to a few points:
- Per frequent notes of 3-hit bosses, that's more or less the standard in a majority of Mario games, including Mario 3 for the most part, so I just decided to make it a rule. Early in development some of the World 2 bosses (e.g. Wart) did have 5 hits, but eventually everything aligned at 3.
- Not sure why you were experiencing that weird freeze with Big Boo. I vetted the game on actual hardware, so all I can say is that emulator must be doing something quirky.
- Reznor (World 4 miniboss) does cause tremendous slowdown. Truth is, it's using every object slot and sprite available to do 4 Reznors plus 4 platforms. I never could imagine a way to get it to run faster. Basically was just running up against a limitation of the SMB3 engine there.
- World 5's boss is sort of a play on both Cobrat and Tryclyde, so you're right there. Since he's down to one head, I just called him Clyde. I actually was just going to do outright Tryclyde at first, but I thought it'd be too similar to the Wart battle. The Clyde sprite was actually a mistake when I started working out the sprite where the one head got rammed into the body and I decided to just go for the single-headed design instead.
- The World 6 Bowser Jr hitting himself was strangely something that never came up in my testing, but it's come up in a lot of others. In this one case it's a glitch that works in the player's favor so I didn't really concern myself with it too much. I never looked into it specifically, but I figure it's a timing issue... Jr is made "invincible" for a moment when he tosses the shell (ironically because I didn't want him to hit himself) but I guess there's circumstances where the shell is present when his invincibility is removed.
- World 7 was definitely THE passion project of the whole show. The reverse gravity thing was started very early as one of my most important priority items. It was also the most complex thing to implement since it needed to greatly upgrade a lot of SMB3's world collision code. Also, including the Mario 3 Giant World stuff does go back to the Supermassive Galaxy in SMG2, but technically I was 7 worlds into development and realized that by chance the Giant World "theme" code had remained largely untouched, so I figured I'd just go ahead and use it for fun.
- That Bowser glitch with the fireballs -- never saw that one before!
- Keeping the difficulty overall sane was definitely a design goal. I completely agree that a lot of Mario hacks fall to the "Kaizo" route, or at least trend that direction. Assuming the goal of the creator was not just to make another "Kaizo", I think it's a mix of the hack creator being too experienced and making levels "easy for themselves", or otherwise just a poor grasp of game design. In any case, my favorite Mario games are ones that I can mostly sit back and enjoy without being overly frustrated, so I wanted 3Mix to be the same.
- There wasn't really meant to be an overarching story because this was more like a "showcase." The game is a technical piece, not really trying to play with Mario lore particularly. As such it's a really weak thread at best... it's sort of like each World briefly summarizes the game it came from but there's a tiny bit of alternate timeline stuff going on via Bowser Jr. But anyway, I respect that you would've wanted that sort of loose story (and in all fairness most Mario games do generally have at least a really basic story throughout), so I'll definitely keep that in mind if I ever try something else in Mario.
- As for the levels note, since I too like Mario games to be casual experiences, I can see where going a bit offbeat might've been frustrating. I think it's probably because the simplistic nature of SMB3's level design (and likely of most 2D Mario platformers) is usually pretty linear, which for some of the more complex games I was trying to represent didn't necessarily translate the same. But nonetheless, there are some levels that even I am not happy with because of their quirks or complexity, so it's definitely not perfect.
Anyway, glad you overall enjoyed it. As for the bar being set, the creator of Mario Adventure took my source and started upgrading it for their own use and put out some pretty impressive demo videos. I'm not sure if anything will ultimately come of it, but the bar can definitely raise higher if folks are inspired and capable enough. Honestly I hope to see it someday.

I've read most everything I could find that you've said publicly about the game, and I really find it fascinating - especially the behind-the-scenes stuff. It's evident that there was real passion and dedication behind this game. My mind was blown to shreds repeatedly. Genuinely impressive work on this ROM hack, Captain, I've only just heard about this from subbing to killgruz recently. This would be pretty cool to have on a repro cart with battery back-up. :)

The serious show-stopper Mike Matei hit was fixed in Rev 1 I think. Rev 2B was the last one I made before I stopped updating. There's not a lot of super serious stuff left that I'm aware of. However, I'm not sure if any carts are being sold with 2B or not.

Definitely, but I have to wonder if an actual NES console would be able to handle it. There is so much in SMB3 Mix that would push the processor to the limit.
This looks pretty great, but it makes me want a SMB3 hack that adds Yoshi to the original SMB3. That would be pretty sweet.

Love the style as usual. A more regular romhack segment would be super cool! I've had a lot of fun searching for romhacks of games myself, but if there was a regular series that people could watch, I'd go so far as to say it might spark more mainstream interest in the romhacking scene!
Things like Hyper Metroid, or maybe even a week looking at Super Mario Bros. X and some levels created in it would be really cool. Just some stuff off the top of my head. Keep it up!

Pretty darn interesting. I don't really follow Rom Hack projects, but seeing that the author of this one went that far into tearing Mario 3 apart for it? Totally worth some props there. Nice look at this one all up!

Some of the levels have more than one exit.
The pink comets have you collect a certain amount of pink coins, and the red comets require you to beat the stage as Small Mario, with all powerups removed. You get an additional Star Coin for doing this.
In fact, you can't access World 0 proper until you do this. The levels in World 0 that you access through pipes are also required, because you have to get the keys in order to properly progress through the Zero World. Only then, do you reach the final castle.

In the Super Mario Sunshine world, I recognize the towns--they were graphics from Battle of Olympus, if I'm not mistaken.

I played it through with my real nes and also my analogue mini nt noir a few times each. Never had any game breaking glitches happen although some mechanics can be a little wonky at times. Overall, I really dig what the guy was able to do with this one. One of the rare few rom hacks I have played through multiple times.

Each world having unique sub-bosses and main bosses.. reminds me of Sonic! And that thing in the desert world with the sand filling the room, the gravity reversal... I think the creator is a fan of S&K!

Yoshimaster 9001 It actually IS a cartridge and is made for the main NES. Issues generally revolve around certain emulators players use.
I played this through on the NES PowerPak on my console, works flawlessly. Definitely a good challenge!

A bit of trivia about the Blocks in World 6 from Super Mario Land 2, they were based on Nintendo toy blocks created back in 1968 called N&B blocks in an effort to compete with Lego.

The level with the LEGO bricks in Super Mario Land 2 is a nod to Nintendo's own history. Among their many other business ventures, they were a toy company before becoming the big video game company they are now.

As far as hacks topping this one, the guy who did Mario Adventure is working on a new hack and it has a ton of neat features so far.

4:59 I had a similar issue, but it had to do with entering Toad houses; probably because I patched the European ROM instead of the American ROM.

Here is the fun fact for the Lego(TM) bricks: Those were made by Gunpei Yokoi (Nintendo worker famous for Gameboy and the original Mario Land) to compete against Lego.
What is so hard about jumping over King Totomasu?
Did you know that Yoshi was actually suppose to be in SMB3? The NES technology at the time couldn't handle making the mechanic work like the devs wanted so they pushed him to the back burner until SMW.
You should take a look at Extra Mario Brothers. It's a Metroidvania made with SMB1.
In the 90’s my brother did make jokes about new worlds in mario along with yoshi in it ,he said you needed a gamegenie 2 to do that, and i was mind blown away while another friend of mine told me about an unlockible supermarioworld game in mario 3 perspective once you did put in the right gamegenie codes,
but sadly it turned out to be just a wishfull thinking,but still i had my wishfull thinkings too
I remember how i changed those world codes from mario 3 in a hope to get to an unexisting world,but then i got stack in those unexisting world such as world 0 & 9 but still ,
i wanted to believe that mario 3 contained 32 worlds with all originated mario games in it in mario 3 perspective.
After 10 and 20 years the impossible became just possible despites this mario 3mix goes far beyond the mario 3 engine and for beyond the nes capability’s it works.
Now just imagine if i could,ve get acces to those mario hacks by just using game genie codes,well that would,ve been chaw dropping especially for 1996.

How do you play it? Do you need a specific emulator? I downloaded it and it was a ips file whatever that is and it did not run on my Wii FCE Ultra GX Emulator. I could not find the ROM in NES or ROM file format.
You need to patch a Super Mario 3 ROM file with the IPS file. This site has a tutorial: fantasyanime.com/patching

I'm running this on an original nes in an ever drive. So far no glitches for except some slow down due to multiple spirits. Haven't got to the penguin freezing glitch yet though.

Why couldn't Princess Peach be playable in this? It'll be cool if it had her as a playable character in this.
I went back and collected everything 100%, the true boss in World 9 is a Magician guy or something, then you get the true ending. ^_^ but you do need ta collect all the comet stage coins first.
I enjoy hacks but I haven't been blown away by a hack like SMB 3Mix since Metroid: Rogue Dawn.

Outsider looking in: It looks like he has reverse engineered the script from all the Mario games mentioned before the N64, done an extremely good job of figuring out exactly how they work and then some how made them Cohesive (unless Mario world is just beefed up engine of previous games)
The sprites from the castle world were mad possible by stealing the Art from it's original, down scaling the colour for Nes and then using them accordingly, you don't have rom chips to construe you on space so the art could be possible on nes as long as the pixel size and colour were lessened, This is all guessing from watching other people do rom hacks and make original games.
Does anyone know a good emulator to play hacks like these? I've tried both Nestopia and Mesen, but none of them can actually load the ROM.

uno de los mejores hacks que he jugado, buenos niveles, manejo de personajes magnifico, items muy bien elaborados, lo unico malo del juego que realmente lo fastidia es que no se puede guardar correctamente en caso de que en otra ocasion lo quieras jugar, se congela cuando quieres salir el emulador de nintendo, fuera de eso esta muy bien, yo le doy un 10
Que emulador usas? Te recomiendo Mesen, además puedes hacer overclock y jugarlo sin ralentizaciones
