    London and Paris
Two of the largest, the most important, most famous, most powerful cities in the world. I mean, they both really are kind of a big deal. London is both the capital and largest city of England and the entire United Kingdom. Paris, is both the capital and largest city of France. Both cities not only dominate the culture of their countries, but dominate the culture of the entire continent of Europe.
In terms of metropolitan areas, London is bigger. The London commuter belt has just over 14 million people, while the Paris metropolitan area has over 12.5 million people. So London is basically around 21% of the UK’s population and Paris is basically around 19% of France’s population.
The two cities are just 284 miles, or 457 kilometers apart, and there are probably more options than you realize for ways to go back and forth between the two. You can fly. You can take a train and ferry across. You can drive all the way. Wait...huh? Drive?!? Well, kind of, thanks to the Chunnel, an underground tunnel underneath the English Channel. Channel plus tunnel equals Chunnel. What you really do with your car, though, is drive it onto a train, which then carries you through the Chunnel. The quickest way to get between Paris and London is a train that goes straight through the Chunnel. The journey only takes 2 and a half hours.
Both are two of the most visited cities in the world. After Bangkok, Thailand, London is the second-most visited city in the world and Paris is the third-most visited city in the world. Both have horrendous traffic, although it doesn’t seem to be as bad in London. But yeah try not to drive if you go to either one.
Both are two of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. However, the cost of living is lower in London compared to Paris. And yeah, both are among the wealthiest cities in the world. In terms of GDP, London is ranked 5th and Paris is 6th.
Both are financial capitals of the world, although London is uh, more, yeah. The main industries of both are the service industries. Especially, the professional services in London and commerce in Paris.
Both have lots of universities but London arguably has the highest concentration of prestigious universities in the world. Both have a bike sharing system.

Yes, at 3:17 that is actually Berlin. I use a website called Videoblocks for stock footage. On Videoblocks, I went back and checked, and indeed that footage was marked as London.
At 3:10 that apparently is a different Unknown Soldier and Eternal Flame
And for the record, Paris is an awesome and amazing place. It's one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.

I disagree... Yes, Paris is French but English is widely spoken there.
London is very English and of course many other languages are spoken there but officially its English.

    • @markmark63
      @markmark63 5 ปีที่แล้ว +396

I mean culturally. I've been to many streets in Paris and you always feel like you're in France culturally, but some streets in London you don't recognise that you're in England. The street signs, shop signs, and people can be so different. But your last point is also interesting. English is only a "De Facto" language in the UK - because most people who live here speak English. The only legally official "De jure" language anywhere in the UK is Welsh in wales.

Oh yes, 80% of Paris neighborhoods look the same with the same architecture and yes its very FRENCH..
But the La Defense district looks very high tech and look like any other city worldwide with modern high rise buildings. Just outside Paris city borders, it looks like any other suburb.. The buses in Paris look identical to USA buses..
The Old English look of London still exist but many areas are looking more modern everyday.
If you're from the USA and have spent time in Boston, Philly, NYC, DC, Annapolis etc., and you go to London for the first time, you will feel at home because the architecture will be familiar to you.
Paris on the other hand will be a shock to many because it is so different visually unless you've spent time in DC because DC was molded after Paris..
Yes, outdoor cafes/restaurants and drinking liquor outdoors is very Parisian and Paris still maintains this.

I've lived in both Paris and London and he is waaay off. And unemployment is London is higher than reported. Cost of living if you want to have less than 1h commute is higher. I live in zone 1 and I pay £2600, in Paris I lived in the 16th and paid €1600. Groceries are cheaper ( and crap) and so is beer, but good wine is impossible to find at a reasonable price. "France just surrendered" is very offensive as well. And after all the times I've walked into a tube covered in vomit, I'd take urine any day. And Paris isn't slow paced, the commute is much more efficient, people know how to move and in London there are loads of homeless but if you only hang in zone 1 you won't see it. He should visit Croydon, Brixton or actually just the strand in summer. All in all, he's a moron.

Moments of bias towards London in the video are here. Please drop a like this took me a long time.
(1:29) Paris is actually the 2nd most visited city in the world, not London.
(1:36) What makes you think London has less traffic issues? Have you been to both and compared? 🧐
(1:44) If you do a bit of research, you’ll find that London is actually more expensive.
(1:58) That was a pretty useless and biased comment in my opinion.
(2:12) By putting “arguably” you are saying that it is an opinion of yours and that it is not factual in any way.
(3:03) At least give it a shot in these pronunciations... shake my head. 🤦‍♂️
(3:10) That image is not from the Arc de Triomphe. Do your research.
(3:16) Give us a statistic with a number if you are going to say London has “more” of something. Also, that image is Berlin.
(3:56) This feels like an insult. Yes, French people may be bad at English, but don’t make such accusations! You’d be surprised how bad people in the UK speak French. I’ve been there, so I can judge!
(8:21) You were doing pretty well in the history part... but how can you assume this statement? I can clearly tell you have never been to Paris!
(8:34) What makes you think this? Yes, it’s difficult to find parking, but on what basis did you come to this conclusion?
(8:40) How do you know it’s much cleaner?
(8:45) Navigo card: am I a joke to you?
(9:12) How do you define a slow-paced City exactly? 👀
(9:26) I’ve found the source: you are listening to your wife’s experience. The thing is, your wife isn’t everybody on the planet.
(9:38) I’ve been to both and I confirm this is not true at all. You got this from your wife.
(9:46) Honestly this is biased if you haven’t been to both. I literally didn’t see a difference. Ever.
(9:57) Even North Korea doesn’t do a better job than you at conveying the wrong image of a city/country.
(10:13) What the heck is this fact! 😂 I have a feeling maybe in front of the Eiffel Tower but not the metro!
(10:20) When you are so biased to London you just have to include this phrase in the video. Just wow!
(10:32) There is no difference in terms of scamming in London and Paris. This is just plain bias from wifey.
(10:36) Restrooms are actually free in Paris. Google it.
(10:42) It is so plain and obvious you took this from one single experience: the one of your wife. This has never happened to me in either London or Paris.
(11:43) 2008! Haha that was so long ago and I can tell your video is outdated in many aspects too! 😆

I lived in London in the early 90's when it was grimy and full of litter. The IRA bombers were active so all the rubbish bins were removed so they couldn't hide a bomb or incendiary device in a bin. That meant there was litter everywhere. The tube was filthy due to spending cuts and the people were a bit down-trodden. We visited Paris and stayed in a poorer suburb in the northern part that was mostly home to people from north africa. It was safe and tidy and everywhere we went in Paris people were generally happy and seemed please to meet two New Zealanders trying hard to speak French. We went back in 2008 and both cities had changed dramatically. London was clean, there was no litter and folks seemed happy and positive. Paris was grungy and there were scammers everywhere.

Even if i did appreciate the video... there is a lot of incorrect information:
    - London is way expensive than Paris. Especially in transportation and housing. The city of Paris has a lot of free activities (museum, concert, art etc...). The city of Paris is more "walkable" than London with cheaper transportation
    - When we talk of "core" city, London is way bigger than Paris. London is one big city when there is Paris + his surroundings. Paris is more "human size" than London
    - Paris embodies more the French culture than London the English culture. In Paris, people work to live. In London, people live to work. So a lot of people can come to work but in Paris it's a different work/life balance.

    • @behemoth8399

It is pointless to notice London is way bigger than Paris when Paris is a region. Take a look at Boulogne Billancourt or Neuilly sur Seine for example. 2 cities literaly sticked to Paris with metro in it, where huge profits are made and companies have their hq, they are just the same as an arrondissement.
It just doesn't work the same as London. You can't say for example La Défense is not in Paris, it's the biggest business district in Europe thanks to Paris, however, it's located on 4 different cities, not in Paris. That's why we are creating The Great Paris, because it doesn't make sense to compare to others cities the intra muros part of Paris when it is way bigger in fact. Then we will argue.

The beauty of Paris and London are the they are so close yet worlds apart culturally and that's what makes them both amazing. Here are some honest answers for both cities.
Transportation: Tube vs Metro: Tube is cleaner yet older, but the Metro is faster, more efficient, cheaper and goes where you want to go.
Food: Paris wins but London has really come up in the last 3 years or so. You can't beat French pastries and wine.
People: London is so multi-cultural that it doesn't seem to have a strong British culture where as Paris is all about being French. You can find rude people anywhere in the world. Speaking just a few words of French goes a long way to your overall experience.
Natural Beauty: Both are really flat areas.
Architecture: Paris wins for its consistently brilliant style throughout the city. London has some gems as well and it's new skyscrapers are beautiful, but it's hard to beat walking around Montmarte or Marais.

Realistically both cities are interesting, historic places that are home to great museums, amazing architecture, exciting events etc.
I think to truly understand and appreciate Paris you have to speak French (makes sense) - if you have an understanding of French language, culture and politeness then everything that English speakers typically consider 'rude' about Parisians can actually seem kind of funny and charming in a weird way. Though it is probably worth noting that most non-Parisian French people also have their fare share of opinions about people from Paris - I often say that the stereotypes non-French people have about the French are the same stereotypes non-Parisian French people have about Parisians.
I think a key difference between the two is how they treat their central areas - 'Paris' in the departmental sense (i.e., Paris intra-muros) is very densely populated, with minimal modern architecture (of course there are certain areas with modern architecture, especially towards the périph). This density gives it a very different character to central London, which is more spread out and has seen a lot more modern development. Transport in central Paris is imo easier, as the lines are spaced closer together - it's also easier to switch métro lines than it is to switch lines on the Tube, where at some stations you seem to walk for kilometres (and further to that, most métro stations are shallower and have a shorter journey from train to street level, vs. the tube which is often very deep in the ground - though this is obviously dependent on specific lines).
Re: the question of graffiti, trash etc. - there are areas in both cities which have these problems, and there are areas which have absolutely no trash. But I don't think this is necessarily the best metric to assess a city. I think the issue in Paris can seem exaggerated to tourists because some of the major tourist sites happen to be in areas that have a lower socioeconomic status/a 'rougher' reputation - e.g., Montmartre/Sacré Coeur, the Moulin rouge. But actually I think it's good that Paris has some degree of socio-economic mixité (that's not to say that Paris doesn't have the same kinds of problems that almost all cities do with spatial inequality, because it very much does).
At the end of the day, I love Paris because of its unique, strong Parisian identity. There are very few other major cities in the world which remain so distinctly themselves (though I'm biased bc I lived there for 2 years). I love London because of the diversity of people (coming not just from all over the world but also all over the UK), the interesting neighbourhoods, the excitement. I understand why a lot of English speakers (anecdotally: especially Americans) don't like Paris - it is not a typically 'friendly' city, and if you just go and see the major sites then you'll probably end up feeling like you've just been on a tourist conveyer belt. I think London through its geography often forces visitors to get to know different neighbourhoods a little better. But if visitors to Paris just take the time to step away from the classic tourist haunts, find a local boulangerie and don't take it personally if you don't get any smiles from service staff, there is so much gold to discover and love about Paris.

I love how he mostly mentions what London have more than Paris. I died when he even mentioned "London have more museum than Paris": never will he mention that Paris has the most visited and prestigious museum in the world by far, that would be giving a point to Paris. Saying stuff like the Eiffel Tower being the most visited paid monument in the world was probably also out of question.
And don't worry for the Olympic games, just wait 4 years and a half.
And... oh well no matter. Some parts were informative anyway, especially regarding the past. Though honestly during the first phase of WW1, france saved Paris mostly alone: at the time during the war, in total 1,500,000 french soldiers and 100,000 british soldiers were fighting the Germans, it's ridiculous to place both armies at the same level.

I've had the good fortune to be able to visit Paris a few times and London once, and have to disagree with the assessment that Paris is dirtier and not so friendly to visitors. Paris has street cleaning every morning and just like anywhere else there tend to be more trashed accumulated for pickup in the evening. And just like other cities, there are places that are not as kept up as others. People in Paris are friendly and helpful. When my luggage got stuck at the metro turnstile gate, a guy scanned his card to open the gate so I could free my luggage without my asking. When we were at a boulangerie and couldn't decide what to order, the lady told the other patrons to wait because we had been there first. I think it was because we always attempted to communicate in broken French and was respectful everywhere we went.

Cool video but as a French I have to explain some things^^
The legal border of Paris is really tight, this is why we included the urban area to compare the 2 cities otherwise Paris would be far behind for no reason. This problem also lies in the regions of all major French cities and if you count the urban areas I don't think London would still be 6th French city. Furthermore, for reknow monuments of Paris it would have been good to consider the urban area, with Disneyland and even more Versailles.
Paris is not dirty, people feel like it is because of the comparison to other European cities but actually London is about the same and NYC is a total garbage then 😅
Public toilets are free in Paris, but there are just a few of them and often not properly working.
We do not pay for the metro with coins haha. What is truly a shame is the lack of contactless payments, but we also use magnetic cards.
London has more museums? Might be true I'm curious. But I'm not sure London was destroyed that much by Nazi Germany... And if Paris got spared don't think that the French people never experienced bombing. I say that because you insist on the surrendering thing.
Oh and the multicultural aspect I think is truly biased and I wonder if you skipped the urban area figures. Immigrants arrived nonetheless decades ago in France (I mean the great waves of immigration) which means that their children are now becoming adults and are French soil born citizens, so they don't appear in charts, and also because it is forbidden in France to make charts on religion etc .. Paris is multiethnic^^ and as for universities, you forgot to mention that university is free in France, which in fact does change everything! And as non native English speaking schools, French colleges face the difficulty of being known worldwide

The french army declared Paris an open city because the french military command has moved the defensive line over the Loire. (Still it hasn't work because at this moment the german were outnumbering the french). Paris was occupied on 14th of June 1940, and the french government capitulate on 22 of June 1940. The army was still fighting over the Loire, but the government under Petain decide to negociate. The french government was really weak before WW2, too much corruption.

Even if they don't have the same range of iconic landmarks as the capital, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Lyon (to name a handful) are all nicer cities to visit, with friendlier locals and a more authentic atmosphere. But to really appreciate France, you need to get out of the cities altogether, as the 'soul' of the nation is in the countryside (largely because that's where food comes from!)
