When I lived in Cuba, the North Korean embassy was one street corner away. Normal, helpful people. Even got to know the ambassador‘s son.
One of the local barbers put up pictures of North Korean haircuts to mock Kim Jong Un's policies. North Korea visited and formally complained about it, clearly their staff had seen it. They were kindly told to fuck off, this is a free country, it's not Eritrea. Or North Korea. lol

I delivered food to the Venezuelan embassy in Vienna once. It's literally just a single appartment in a residential building. They had a massive portrait of Simon Bolivar in the entry hall and were quite nice people actually, 10/10 best embassy ever.

Being a South Korean living in London, I searched both the North and South Korean embassies to make myself sure that when I ask the locals directions, they wouldn't point to the wrong one. I saw the North Korean embassy on Google street view and had a hard time since finding it since it just looked like another house on the block.

I'm gonna be real that is the ONLY place in the US where that statement is probably wrong. That city bleeds politics, everyone knows a world map as thoroughly as a preacher knows a bible.
DC does an event every year (at least pre covid) where all the embassies have like..an open house on the same day and you can walk from embassy to embassy and they have little shows/activities/food and sometimes tours of the embassy. Recommend it if you ever get the opportunity!
I'm pretty sure the foreign relations students at the university I attended took part in that. They went to DC and toured the Polish and Chinese embassies among others (the Polish ambassador's staff even held a discussion with them on the future of world partnerships, which is pretty cool).

Any Embassy will help you. Oh how true, and they use that to their advantage. One time , when I was travelling through Aussie, I tried to visit my Canadian Embassy. Turned out it was a Aussie National holiday so Embassy was closed with a note on the gate to go to the INDIA embassy. Went there and cautiously asked about my concern. They happily assisted me and explained that all the commonwealth embassies took turns being open for Aussie holidays for all commonwealth citizens. I thought that was a great way to run diplomatic relations.
But they helped you because they were a commonwealth country that had a deal with other commonwealth embassies and you're a commonwealth citizen. So your first sentence is not true.
I liked your story though, interesting! In some countries Norwegian and Swedish embassies cooperate like this, probably many countries do.
In Canberra, the British, Canadian, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea (former Australian territory) High Commissions are all next to each other on the road leading up the hill to Parliament House. Most of the other embassies are in the suburb of Yarralumla, on big blocks of land that make it look like, well, something between a college campus and a garden cemetery.
I WENT TO THE NORTH KOREAN EMBASSY IN LONDON (not inside lol, but still). This video inspired me to attempt to visit as many London embassies in one day as possible. After realising I couldn't do them all, I decided to do the furthest out ones so I could finish the rest off at a later date. MY HAND HAS BEEN INSIDE NORTH KOREA!!!

@Thanos Rat it’s land owned by the hosting country or nation , so the nk embassy is technically on land that was “given “ to them for the purpose of the embassy but the hosting country always has ownership and rights to the land which would trump any country saying it’s actually their land . Otherwise we’d all jus build as many embassy’s as possible to slowly steal land away
I live nearby the embassy and a barbers put up a poster saying something along the lines of “Bad hair day? Come inside” and had multiple pictures on it including one of Kim Jong-un and the diplomats from the NK embassy called the police asking the barber to take the poster down

High Commissions aren't "secondary" buildings. They're essentially the embassies for any commonwealth country. Which is why you don't find the Australian Embassy in a Commonwealth county, you'd find the Australian High Commission.
I know you sort of implied it in your last sentence, but I think it should be clarified that the 'high commission' identifier is only applied to the diplomatic missions of Commonwealth countries within other Commonwealth countries. So, for example, the Australian diplomatic missions in Washington D.C. and Beijing are still referred to as an 'embassies' because the United States and the People's Republic of China are not part of the Commonwealth.

Also countries such as Taiwan without full recognition will have de-facto embassies but call them trade commissions.

Actually, British food has really improved over the years. First time I was in the UK in 1991 I thought first that I was behind the Iron curtain. In 1996 it was a bit better and as the years flew by it got better and better. And after being in Yorkshire for a three weeks holiday in 2018 I was positively surprised by the British cousin. It has become really good, at least for me.

When you showed foreign embassies in Washington, D.C. via Google Maps, you could see the terrible state of America’s roads.
Imagine there’s a house fire in the North Korean embassy.
The street empties from their homes rushing to help their neighbour, and are met by a barricade, armed guard and diplomat at a podium insisting there never was a fire, and even if there was, it would be a North Korean fire for North Korean purposes.
This is all touched off by the fire spreading next door and an elderly lady screaming for help from a second floor window being told to stop being xenophobic.

The UK is culturally so different from Japan. The point made in the video is that they both have countries split in half next to them. Last time I checked Japan doesn't control North Korea and in that case Puerto Rico and Madagascar would be more similar to Japan than the UK lol
@@onebigsnowball Japan and britain are both islands, just offshore of their respective continent, they both were "on the side" of history, they got relevant relatively recently (in historical terms), they both had a empire, they both are America's closest ally (and also somewhat their bootlickers), and the list goes on.

The purpose of an embassy is to assist citizens of its home country living, working or travelling overseas - not sure how busy the desk is in dealing with all those North Korean tourists in London, but I'm sure that the Room 39 desk that operates a vast network of informants who monitor and report to the authorities fellow citizens they suspect of criminal or subversive behaviour and allegedly uses money from drug smuggling, money laundering, and human trafficking to keep North Korean elites living in luxury is overworked.

Here in NY there's a permanent mission of the DPRK near the UN but you can't tell from the outside that there's a DPRK mission inside. It's in an office condo in an isolated part of the building. Its neighbor is a bank and a Basque delegation

Here in Sweden We have one/ two ish embassy areas. They are very big and contain a lot of embassies (US, UK and so on) which isn’t super central but still just on the edge and people still count it. One day I was out jogging on ”Lidingö” (an island right outside Stockholm) and I saw a large residential building at the side of one of the larger roads on the island. The windows had all the blinds closed and looked creepy as shit. I looked around to see the front gate where I saw of course “democratic people’s Republic of Korea”. At that point I decided it was best I not snoop around and continued my run. This was kilometers away from the normal embassy area and it’s just so strangely placed. The only other embassy on the island is Iran. Strange combo. But that’s further down and has signs leading up to it and is way more official with a big compound and isn’t in like a huge residential area. This one was just odly placed in a normal looking house in a normal residential area. Strange country that is.
Trust me, as an American, we love the brits. They are one of our “Freedom Brothers”

The DPRK embassy is where it is for reason , its not because they could not afford a building in central London , it was because they could not find a place in the central London , for numerous reasons property owners were reluctant to sell them buildings , the host country was not helpful either , so they brought the current property , i have been there to official receptions in the mid 90s , the garden is part of the Embassy to , no doubt MI5 has pictures of myself and others taken during the receptions , you could see there vans across the road , so we waved at them some gave them the middle finger .
