    For those curious, a more detailed explanation for why the Valsalva maneuver can be dangerous when held for too long:
    One of the larger contributing factors to the huge drop-off in both heart rate and blood pressure is that when you brace the air in your trachea, your epiglottis in your throat pushes some of the pressure out onto your vagus nerve that descends just along the sides of your neck. The pressure from the air, coupled with the tension in the muscles of the neck, stimulates the nerve and causes it to decrease your heart rate (as it would normally do otherwise). This, on top of your muscles soaking up so much blood, can lead to the light-headedness that many of us have come to be wary of.

      Thank you!

    • @5hydroxyT
      @5hydroxyT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      yep...and you squish your inferior vena cava and right atrium from all that internal pressure, reducing venous return, which further reduces cardiac output. When you add that on top of the vagal stimulation you mentioned- which slows down the rate rate - this significantly impairs the heart’s ability’s to compensate for the smaller volume of blood it is working with. So cardiac output goes waaaay down, and boom: blackout. It’s not due to carotid compression, as some say (it’s probably most common in max deadlift attempts) 👍🏼🤓

    • @defragsbin
      @defragsbin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@5hydroxyT I always take a knee after a hard set of deadlifts 'cause I've seen so many people take a faceplant instead! Used to get lightheaded now and then, hasn't happened since. So much junk, racks, weights etc. around the floor of many gyms, I'm amazed more people don't suffer serious injuries.

    • @seal869
      @seal869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@5hydroxyT Increasing intrathoracic pressure definitely decreases venous return (and therefore cardiac output) through the mechanism you describe. But the vagal stimulation isn’t caused by air (or anything else) pushing on the vagus directly as in the explanation Zack posted, it’s caused by the increased pressure in the carotid artery/sinus (which is actually innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve, with the vagus being the efferent limb of the reflex) which is caused by the increased intrathoracic pressure. So it’s true that in weight lifters this isn’t caused by direct compression of carotid, it’s caused by increased thoracic pressure. BUT it can be caused by direct pressure on the carotid too, since the nerve doesn’t know the difference between a high arterial pressure vs someone karate chopping the carotid sinus. This is why carotid sinus massage used to be taught as a first line vagal maneuver for people with certain types of tachycardias, but while it’s still used in some cases we’ve mostly moved away from it in favor of Valsalva, since rubbing the sinus can dislodge plaques and cause stroke.

    • @5hydroxyT
      @5hydroxyT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seal869 thanks for the clarification on that one! so stimulation of the vagus happens via the carotid sinus. i still feel (not sure exactly) that it’s unlikely someone could put direct pressure on their carotid arteries with a barbell - anatomically i think you would crush your trachea first which would be a slightly bigger problem...😮

    I'm not sure where I come down on "strong man" - for me right now it's too much of a risk unless the weight is really light, but like weight lifting in general I'm sure it's fine with proper technique, programming and discipline (which probably means working with good coach or trainer). The axel lift is an odd thing - but strong man is all about lifting odd or "ordinary" objects (as opposed to olympic bars) which isn't in itself a bad thing. I think Alan Thrall sets a great example of how to approach strong man in general.

    The girl at 7:40 is doing the continental grip. Is used in some strongman exercises which require to use an axle (a very thick barbell) to up the weight overhead. Since the axle doesn't let you to propperly hook grip, the only way to up a heavy weigh with it is using inverted grip and rolling the shaft over your arched torso and then push press the barbell (or strict push based on the strength available). Is not a mistake (albeit she loses balance), is the way is meant to be done. You wouldn't be able to clean an axle bar with a heavy weigth.

    I’ve just been learning weightlifting since April, after seeing this I’ve decided to take up knitting instead as it’s safer , woolly sweater anyone?!
    Actually I have a good coach, I’m learning with sensible weights and leave my ego at home when I go to train so hopefully I never have accidents like these!

      That injury was more due to carelessness than it was do to the split jerk tbh; the guy didn't move his leg because he didn't care.

      @@MickyMs looking at it closer looks like he probably just bruised it. Ive hit my leg before dropping jerks from overhead it definitely hurts and can be dangerous. But i think it looks like he didnt seriously snap anything at least.

    Just like in gymnastics they should teach you to break your fall or bail a lift in this case. People put themselves in so much unnessecary danger and blame it on weightlifting being a dangerous sport.

    A good number of these seem to be made significantly worse or more dangerous by using the wrong equipment or workspace. There's a reason the pros use blocks and not a cage rack - so if you lose the weight it just falls away from you and doesn't slam into a rack that pushes it right back onto you (like 11:30). And those poor pots at 13:20 were clearly in the line of fire before she even set up. If the bar isn't going up, where is it going to go? A pretty basic question to ask before you start.
