I lived there last year for 5 months and was getting by easy on 1K a month ,,, hotel with AC and cold shower was $210 a month and motorcycle was $100 a month ,,, so that left me with "DOUBLE" what a average Philippino family makes.... I could have spent 3 or 4 times that ,, but was vary happy at about 1k

What hotel did u live with AC for $210 a month? It must be one of those small cheap hotel rooms, i have lived in IT park and before cebu business park. I rent a newer condo in IT park for 20k a month, AC full time is 3600 pesos, the main worries is if u have money saved for medical emergencies, or have a few credit cards with big limits. I have seen so many expats with little money saved, then they have a medical emergency.

Ive been thinking about this for a while now. I think that the same individuals who "claim" that you cannot survive on less than $2500-$3000 per month in the Philippines could not survive on what i'm living on in the USA which is far less than the $2500-$3000.

The first thing every expat needs to evaluate honestly is how much is their monthly net income because that will set the tone for how they need to navigate their accommodation options, shopping, and entertainment. Those with modest means will have to adapt accordingly while those with $4k+/mo. can replicate or even upgrade from their life in the west.

    • @philippinesxtremes
      @philippinesxtremes  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes Juan..it's a broad spectrum. There's a fit for most any income. But the lower you get on that sliding scale you also need other ingredients such as adaptability and more.

The same thing happened to me in Hawaii. I lived in the popular area, and struggling. Once I lived there for awhile and was considered a local, my expenses dropped by two thirds. At the time, I was paying $750 a month, a local guy said he had a room in his house for $275 a month, and he told me where all of the locals shopped, and all I had to do was shoe my Hawaii driver's license. Crazy. I literally lived one mile away from the tourist area where I payed $750.

Great video mate I totally agree with you. I have seen plenty of nice basic apartments and town houses go for as little as 3.5 k a month with tiled floors and a western bathroom in a guarded subdivision el i even got a two bedroom place offered to me in San Pablo or 2.7k it just needed a couple of a bit of a paint job and a patch in the ceiling. The only thing i would disagree with u is meat in the wet market it does not seem to be much different in price to Save more but the veggies are a lot cheaper. In general if u buy Filipino brands they are usually half the price so my thought is live in a smaller city like Ormoc or Baybay and get a maid to do your favourite western dishes from scratch with local produce. Oh and lastly eating out in a province town like Dipolog is way cheaper like 150 to 200 pesos plus there are the popup burger chains personally I love minute burger but i had burger hub in Dipolog and they were good too

    Maayong buntag kuya.
    musta na?
You are 100% correct. They are living in their own bubble and life outside of that is something totally alien to them
I will name one in particular. Mike's philippine retirement. Although he's probably not a bad guy and he tells it like HE sees it....... he's living in 2 boxes with a tunnel between them. Duma and cebu.
Outside of that he doesn't know what goes on. He thinks because we live in the province we are climbing trees for food and living in a nipa hut with brownout every hour.
Couldn't be further from the truth.
Our house here cost 12k usd completed and it would put most expat rentals to shame including where he's living.
We can reach a hospital in 12 minutes by car.
We have everything we need around us and live a fantastic life on less than 800/month.
I think expats coming here to live like us, first need to ask themselves if they are able to do this because if not........ your gonna need more money

    • @eurotrash2915
      @eurotrash2915 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It's about mindset, expectations and flexibility, most expats going to the Philippines look for a lifestyle similar to that they were hoping to have or expecting to have in their own country. But if you are able to lower expectations and adapt your mindset you'd be able to understand you could've made the change probably years earlier and at a much lower cost of living. It takes a bit of creative thinking to understand this and I'd say that what those clowns in Dramagetme are representing is some form of unnecessary replacement of The American Dream of cannibalistic consumerism, spreading an infection of price rises because of the over representation of Westerners consumerism introduction....imho😊

@@eurotrash2915 you are right about the mindset. If you want to take your American lifestyle with you and spend your day tramping around from coffee shop to coffee shop then its going to cost you.
There is definitely a lot more to life.
His monthly budget is increasing. I have noticed that. Even with the high exchange rate now he can't seem to keep a lid on it.
If the exchange rate falls back down to 45 piso he won't get away with $2000
He thinks it's the normal to support his wife's family but it's actually not. I don't support her family. They have their own money. They have never asked me for anything.
Yet if I say that then I don't know what I'm talking about

Hey man, great content! You hit a lot of nails on the head, and I'm sure many find it puzzling to see videos and commenters telling you it costs a min of $2-3K to live in the Philippines. These folks, mostly retired boomers/military, say that you can barely exist or survive on less than that. They are often condescending and write like they are superior to others saying that their 'lifestyles' are like that of the West or implying they 'live like kings.' Please don't listen to these bloviating blowhards. If you dig deeper, you'll find they are paying for an 'expensive' younger lady, her kids and/or her extended family, or they brag about how much they travel and eat out, aka holiday mode (which I personally tend to find tiring). Our family of 3 (my partner and 1 child of our own) is quite comfortable on a basic budget of $1K, living in Naga, Cebu. Now, we do kick in for extras, from time to time, or upgrades on our home (3bdrm 2 bath townhouse). However, please don't sell all and migrate here without planning carefully. In particular you need to take care to set up your banking and source of income, of which you need to have more than one way to get money. I use a VPN and do not have a local bank account. It's likewise advisable to have two dedicated US Phone lines (Magicjack and Google Voice), as well as a virtual US mailbox. Also, you'll benefit greatly by having some startup cash for appliances and whatnot. Most of us will need a helper/partner/trusted friend to get settled here, and avoid the foreigner tax. Try it for 6 months FIRST, before making your final decision, and do not commit to a lifetime partner before living with her for at least that long. The Philippines is not for everyone, and not always a bed of roses. Many thanks to this channel for making this much needed video.

Too each their own. If you want to live like a native on a lower budget, go for it. If you want a western lifestyle with all the creature comforts, go for it. Your money, your choice. I live in an older subdivision that is showing it age, but I am surrounded by salt of the earth working Joe's and retirees. I based my decision through help from my Filipina family, not vloggers. The fun thing about my subdivision: NO EXPATS. That was my deciding factor. I prefer to shop at the mall supermarkets, thanks to a 3 day bout of " Delhi Belly" brought on by some dubious pork bought at our local wet market. Once bitten twice shy. Bottom line: come here with the budget you have, make the best of it. You are not going to live a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget. Rich, middle, or relatively " poor", as long as you live within your means, you can have the lifestyle you like. Too each their own.

Exactly. I've heard many expat s say that they heard you can "live like a king" hete for $1000 A month. Sorry, no. Could you survive? Yes. But you wouldn't be living in luxury. You can live better here for the same money than you could live in the US ... But not THAT much better.

@markjohansen6048 agreed $1k is not garnering anyone a royal life. But that's double what I got and I feel like my life is VASTLY improved over life in western Washington state.
In Washington, could I eat fish, clams, shrimp, Crab etc whenever I felt the urge? Or make fresh mango, papaya, exotic fruit shakes whenever I wanted? Was the beach a stone's throw away from my house and the water was warm and crystal clear with a white sandy beach?
      Heavens no.
And were the people there in Washington nearly as kind?
Road raging nutsos with hair triggers for anger and drug addicts on every corner and people breaking into my car once (sometimes more) per month...
Being far removed from that is worth it's weight in GOLD. Life is good. Happiness is worth even more.
Philippines is a GOOD trade over all of that nonsense my brother

SSI an SSDI still starts at about $800, so people are living on $800 a month in the US. They have roommates an cook at home, but they do it. I always laugh at videos saying you need more than that in countries with a much lower cost of living. What they really mean is they can't because they are addicted to spending money. Eating out constantly and/or in the bar every night. Wanting more House than they need. Needing to be in a popular location.
You see the same mindset in the US to. People crying about houses all being $500k or more. I point them to houses well under $100k. They always respond with "I don't want to live there." They don't seem to understand that their wallet doesn't get fatter just because you want to live in a city.

High end condominiums in Cebu are more than 90% owned by local filipinos and same with who actually lives there. I will name some to you right now - taft east gate and mandani bay suites. I've lived in both and i see very very little foreigners who live there.
There are a few condos where they cater to foreigners in IT park and i would never live there and neither would a local upper middle class Filipino.

Don't misquote me either I said cater to foreigner and more WELL TO DO Filipino.
They're not "just prices and Filipino can afford them" unless you're talking about the measly 4.9% of them. Which means 95.1 percent of the country probably couldn't.

1 BR ocean view 69 Sq.m. start at 29M. 100% of the villas are owned by Filipinos (I confirmed both with their lead of sales and have been on site four times).
I thought only 5% of filipinos can afford to there? The reality is that most foreigners who are living in the philippines are middle class and people make them out to be rich.
Both you and i agree that the mid to high end condos are mostly occupied by filipinos. So exactly how are they catering to foreigners and gouging them with "foreigner prices" because filipinos are the ones who are purchasing there and living there by and large.

@@philippinesxtremes The reality is you're perpetuating the myth that many Filipinas and TH-camrs believe that the average foreigner who lives in the Philippines is rich. The reality is that couldn't be further from the truth. A $1500 to $2500 combined pension or budget is what the majority of foreigners who live here are working with and that is squarely middle class.
The two condos that are always pushed to foreigners is the Ávida towers and Solinea. Those condos have 500 plus units per building and are very much rundown and mid end. They allow short-term airbnb rentals which makes the place a zoo.
A filipino from a well to do family wouldn't be caught buying or living there.
Some filipinas are milking old foreigners dry because they assume they are rich when in fact they are far, far from it. The facts I just outlined show otherwise.
