Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement

- Here's how to replace the instrument cluster light bulbs or gauge backlighting in a Toyota.
This procedure applies to the Toyota Solara and Camry, and is similar to the Toyota Corolla, Sienna and Highlander.
Why drive in the dark at night, not knowing what speed your going? Replacing the instrument cluster back light bulbs on your older Toyota is easy.
The instrument cluster first needs to be removed from the dash. This is usually accessed by first removing the trim panel around the cluster, and then removing 4 Phillips screws holding the cluster in.
The wires behind the cluster do not need to be disconnected to change bulbs, there should be enough room to wiggle the cluster out past the steering wheel where you can twist to unlock the bulbs.
#74 LED bulbs were used for the warning lights, and #194 LED bulbs were used for the back lights.
Once replaced, the cluster will still have a greenish tint to it, since the speedometer face itself has a greenish huge to it, even if you replaced it with white bulbs.
For an even better, brighter, clearer and more luxurious upgrade, you can swap in a Lexus ES300 cluster following these instructions:

Thanks for the help ... The guys at Pep Boys didn't think I could do it ... Proved them WRONG thanks to you
Dealer wants $75 to do this, $4.95 from local auto parts + my labor+ your video
Thanks
Glad my video could help :)
speedkar99 All i seem to find are 194 T10 bulbs and I'm hearing that the T10 doesn't fit in the 99 so Lara is this true and also what bulb are you showing in the video and where did you purchase it thank you for the great input
Nice job on the video. Clear image and sound. Really good.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing. :)
Hey man, this was a very helpful video. I recently changed the gear shift light in my 2001 Toyota Camry LE and after that I was wondering how to change the dashboard ones as well because I have several of them out also. I am going to replace mines too with some Led and probably change them all at once so they will all look the same. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate you sharing your familiarity with others.
This is great....this happens to be my morning to do job.
Quick and to the point. Kudos.
Thanks so much for the video!
Nice job! Good edits, clear, and concise!
+Dennis Bishop Thank you
Thank you so much for the video, it looks like it would work for my Toyota Tacoma 2002, it has the same set up.
huge thank you !!!
Thanks for sharing! I thought it was a lot more complicated than this. Merci Beaucoup!
+wayne worthy Thanks glad it helped
outstanding presentation. thank you
its very helpful thank you
Thank you great help
Keep adding more of your knowledge God bless
Awesome thanks
nice job
I used five LED bulbs, 194 wedge white 5 SMD 5050 type.
There is a green film on the gauges so it will still have a greenish glow after the LED upgrade.
Love the video! Very well done. I can't find the bulbs on ebay however. Could you please post a link in your description of the exact bulbs you used?? Thanks ahead of time!!!!
I'm looking to change the dash lights in my 1999 toyota tacoma prerunner and was wondering how many lights I would need?
I'd say they are slightly brighter. They appear sharper, and aren't as green since there isn't a green condom on the bulb anymore.
Changing the type 70 bulbs (turn signal, cruise, check engine, door, PRDN2L) lights to LEDs made them much brighter.
Old video, but do you have to get colored bulbs for the warning lights? Or is there a colored screen that shows the actual colors, so it doesn't matter?
There's clips all around, including one near the clock. Give it a good even tug and they should release. There is a procedure on Toyotanation on the removal for the Camry.
I like those needles
outstanding video, I just need to know if you can get rid of the greenish tint of the gauges so I can get a pure white color after I LED upgrade today?
+AtomicEgg_AVA You can't, its embedded in the screen printed graphics for the speedometer. The best you can do is swap in a Lexus ES300 cluster: th-cam.com/video/lK-M9fvSGb0/w-d-xo.html
Great video. Lights went out on my gas saver (2000 camry) last night. Checked the fuses today, they're good, so my guess is the lights. Hope to get on it tomorrow!
All the lights went out at once? Double check your dimmer switch too.
speedkar99 that was my thought at first too, but the light behind the gas gauge has been out for some time now, so I guess it was just time for the rest of the dash to go out. I didn't get a chance to get on it yesterday, we had bad weather in the gulf here. heading to autozone now to see if I can get some bulbs to get the project started.
Swap them for LED's :)
Or get clear bulbs and color them with a Sharpie.
speedkar99 got it all swapped out today - it was the lights. Couldn't have done it without your video. My car has the vent and the clock connected to the trim around the speedometer panel ... that was tricky ... there's a connecter behind the vent and the clock, pull hard and it will come out eventually!
Glad it helped. I do recall the Camry's that have the trim going around the vent with a clip that you have to watch out for. Did you put in colored lights?
thanks man
What are the LED bulb number for the ac control i have camry 2001
Can you tell me where can i get those leds and what is the size and how many, thank you for ur post.
I went to my local auto parts store, tried to buy some 194 bulbs to replace my burnt out ones for the instrument panel and the guy told me to not get those as they're too high of a wattage and i need some weird special order bulb that when I looked it up, doesn't even look remotely close to the one that I pulled out from the panel. Do you think I'd be fine to just throw in a 194 bulb? I know from pulling the burnt one out, that the 194 is exactly what'll fit in there.
Hello, love your Camry videos!
I am wanting to do this on my Camry as well.
Do the LEDs make the instrument cluster any brighter than the stock lights ?
And although there is a greenish tinge, is it less green than stock?
Thanks
LEDs are brighter but why not go for a Lexus cluster swap? See my other video on that.
@@speedkar99 does this work for a toyota avalon?
Thank you thank you. It was hard to get the screws unscrewed but once I got the top two out everything else was gravy. Got the lights from auto store for about $5 a pair.
Good job, did you change the bulb color?
speedkar99 I did not change the light color. I just needed lights.
How I'm the world did you get those two screws out. I just say outside for 20 minutes yelling every curse word ever thought of. No luck. It's like they're super glued in.
in*
Jason Buras I went to Walmart and bought a very short screwdriver for about $2. Regular screwdriver was too long.
So how many bulbs did you change all together?
Hi, very instructive video. ive been looking up to replace the instrument lights in my cars dash (camry 2001) before i pull everything out i will like you to tell me how many led light will i need and how many different types i have to buy. thanks
You need 25 type 74 LED bulbs and 5 type 194 LED bulbs.
nice video for showing how to do this. how many LEDs are needed? seems like there is still a green tint with the LED in? dimmable?
+Colin Shum 5 LEDs if I recall. There is a greenish tinge to the gauge faces.
I've long swapped to a Lexus cluster which is much much better. :
th-cam.com/video/lK-M9fvSGb0/w-d-xo.html
Will 20 SMD cause any problems or will it just be brighter?
Any idea where 20 SMD would fit in this car? I bought a few thinking they'd fit in the instrument cluster
I have a small 4cyl. 1985 Toyota pickup, and all but 2 lights work on the cluster, do you know if it's the same concept, as in twist and turn light replacement?
+marinmedia Yes. The bulb size might be different though.
thanks dude
Hey speedkar,
I could really use advice or any insight you can share about an ongoing instrument cluster headache. I've already had the cluster out once to replace the speedometer (old one had ruined board from leaky capacitors) and when I put the cluster back in the speedometer works perfectly but I now have two dead light bulbs. The "D" light and the right turn signal lights aren't working. Since I planned to take the cluster out again I bought $40 worth of new bulbs from a genuine Toyota parts distributor because I wanted to keep it OEM.
The gear indicator lights I received have the little plastic base so I can pop the new bulbs into their sockets after removing the old ones; however, the turn signal lights I received are just the bulb itself: Toyota part # 90981-11018. Is it possible do you think for me to just pull these old turn signal bulbs out and push the new ones in like I can do with the bigger bulbs? A friend of mine told me I can't slide the smaller turn signal bulb out like the larger tacho/speedo "green condom" bulbs.
If I have to solder stuff, what kind of professional shop could/should I call to do that?
Thank you sir!
+heymisterderp Yes you can slide the bulb out with a strong grip.
Thanks bro
Was it the 194 or the 74 bulbs or that had a green sheath? Do you know if the heat/AC console uses the same bulbs? Thanks for the video.
The 194 bulb have the green sheath. The 74 bulbs are clear and get their color through the tint on the cluster face. I believe the HVAC uses #74 bulbs.
This includes the shift indicator lamps? Such as those showing "D" and "P"?
Thanks for posting the video.
Yes, same for P & D indicators.
Are the led bulbs brighter?
Do you know what’s the fuse I have to change because i already replace the bulbs light It didn’t turn on if you know let me know please thanks for your video
Do you think putting in a different color LED could get rid of the green color?
Kinda. The green tint is in the gauge face itself. Having a strong color will make the green less noticeable but it won't go away.
I swapped to a Lexus ES300 cluster, much better!
hello
thanks for video budy, Does these bulbs fit 2000 camry?
beside which size is the ones they fit this car? thanks.
Herish Anwer Yes, the cluster is the same on the 2000 Camry. Size 194 bulbs for the back lighting and #74 bulbs for the indicator warning lights.
Can you show how to replace the center console bulbs for the climate control buttons?
+rkgsd check my other video for HVAC and dash led light replacement
I have a 2000 camry. the bulb on the right of my tach (closest to radio) is blown. which size is that? Great video!!
#194 most likely.
Hello can explain in detail how many type of bulb in dashboard and how bulb in there and how many we need to upgrade to full led dash please I have Camry 2001 please in detail so I can buy in bulk of LEDs thanks
Hi, I like your video. I have a 99 Solara and I am thinking of replacing my bulbs in my dashboard with LED bulbs and want to replace all of them. How many LED 194 & 74 bulbs do I need to buy. Also, I want to replace the bulbs in my middle console where the heater/AC section. All my lights are out. What kind of bulbs and do u have a video how to replace these? Thanks
You need 5 194 LED bulbs and roughly 24 74 bulbs. In my opinion there's no point replacing all the #74 bulbs when they won't be lit most of the time (such as battery check, traction control, and oil pressure).
I'm not sure on the HVAC bulbs, the ones I've taken out from the junkyard look like a NEOx style 3mm bulb for the automatic HVAC unit. For the console LED replacement, see my other video: th-cam.com/video/pu-Ok1NRspw/w-d-xo.html
speedkar99 Thanks. Have you tried replacing bulbs on the HVAC console? basically 90% are burnt out and I want to replace then, Do you know I site that will show me how to do this?
I assume you have the auto-HVAC system? I have tried replacing them by pulling out the bulb and putting in an SMD LED in the twist socket base but it doesn't physically fit. The HVAC doesn't have a diffuser so it will have too many hot spots. I have to look into the right replacement bulb so I can upgrade my HVAC lights to LEDs too.
Check out this thread for ideas: www.clublexus.com/forums/es300-and-es330/751275-diy-4es-climate-control-bulb-replacement.html
speedkar99 thanks
Are the big bulbs T10 size?
do not forget to replace the #74 bulbs with leds the only two lights that come on are the oil light and the brake light however that can be overcome to keep them off getting high power type 74 led bulbs. I like the lexus guage cluster better you did I will do that myself to glad you made the video I downloaded it for later incase your videos ever go offline.
Hopefully the conversion works out for you, let me know how it goes. Do you have a V6?
I have 1999 toyota solara looking for an engine for mine a lexus engine from an es300 98 modle I know a guy only works on these cars has like nine of these engines all v6 all from lexus and toyota camry all from 1992 to around 2001 all fit my and your car ( : oil pump went bad on mine thought the oil light switch was bad so because it had oil in it turns out the owner before me had run it dry on oil must have gone into shock when I put my new oil in it castrol clogged the intake tube for the oil pick up line I assume and it messed up the oil pump and blah my engine is clicking loud so time to get a new one mm hmm I love my toyota solara it is fast well when it was running correct! (:
Sorry to hear about your engine.
Most likely your car had the common sludge problem, causing the engine to rapidly consume oil and build up sludge in the engine. Make sure you change your PCV valve.
An engine from a 1997-2001 Camry V6 or a 97-98 Lexus ES300 will work for your car. Anything older is from the previous generation, so compatibility can't be guaranteed. The newer engines had variable valve timing.
VVTI is the best ever Pass on any honda toyota and bmw for life. or anything german as long as it is japanese must be toyota only.
Same process for 1980 pickup? Are there blue led upgrades?
+John c If your pickup uses a back lit display, the process is quite similar. If it uses a 194 style bulb (or any standard size), you can buy any color LED replacements for them off eBay.
Thank you Speedkar
i have a question .. if i want to replace the to LEDs .. do i have to change something ? like fuse or anything?
No. Direct swap to led
Do you know how to place LED Lights on a 2001 Toyota Highlander?
+julio velez Those might be soldered in
Yes, same as 194.
How it then becomes green? Did you use green bulbs? I have the same car and I replaced the dashboard bulbs with the long life 194 bulbs w/ green cover. The result comes with the whole dashboard green even the needles are green which not the results I want, I was hoping to look like yours.
+Omar Alhumaidi remove the green cover.
speedkar99 the LED 194 bulbs you used white ? or amber
Are the turn signal bulbs changeable in the instrument cluster too?
Yes
speedkar99 thank you
Is this basically the same in a 2000 Tundra?
Is the LED bulb affected by the dimmer?
thnx!
reply to myself -- no not the same on my tundra, have to remove plastic from below column to access screws on bottom of trim insert.
jsmcguireIII Good to know. I'm sure its not hard to change the bulbs in most Toyota clusters.
hey my cluster looks completely different. I have a camry 2003 LE and all I have is a circuit board and nothing else...you think you can help?
Your circuit board comes with LED's soldered in already. You could try de-soldering them if you want to change their color, or swap for a 2005 Camry cluster with some rewiring to get the optitron gauges. Did they burn out?
na I was just changing the colors and ill try to to what you suggested. Thanks man
Are all the Toyota Camry's light bulbs all like that?
From this generation yes.
What is the official name of the little LED lights I can't find them.
I found the big ones but not the little ones.
How many of the little ones should I buy?
Thank you
Check out eBay for the bulbs. They are 5050 SMD LED socket 194 bulbs. There's about 22 little ones (type 70 or 74) if you want to replace them all.
k thank you for your help and great Video
how about toyota 4 runner 2008 ,how to open to replacement led bulb thank you
Doesn't that use LEDs
Does the 194 work for a 2001 toyota camry
Yes
are the bulbs tinted green or is the panel tinted green?
+Josh Dierker The panel is green.
speedkar99 thanks
is this the same procedure for my 03 camry v6? because i took the cluster out and i see no bulbs in there? why is that?
+jOeL SiMoN The 2003 Camry uses LED lights. You have to desolder them and replace them.
+speedkar99 Thanks. They aren't bright enough. And I do not know how to desolder them and locate the bulbs either lol
Convert it to the more modern and brighter 2005-2006 Camry instrument cluster, here's how:
www.toyotanation.com/forum/104-5th-6th-generation-2002-2006-2007-2011/639546-gen-5-camry-optitron-gauge-swap-possible.html
+speedkar99 Dude thats sounds like a lot of work but I do like the idea of converting. I thought i could pull it off just by replacing the bulbs, just like this one. But thats not possible since its soldered in to the cluster.
+jOeL SiMoN Thank you though.
will LED bulbs dim if I need lower light?
Yes it would dim.
Probably need to do this. my fuel gauge doesn't light up, the right half of my speedo doesnt light up, and the left half of my rpm gauge doesn't light up.
+WrxSTi06 EJ207T Yes or you can do a full ES300 Lexus cluster swap and never worry about burned out gauges!
speedkar99 Haha no thanks. I checked out that video. Not messing with all that lmao
what is the size of the big bulbs? t10 or t5?
194
Can I just replace the bulbs with new color? Just replacing
Certainly. Even cheaper if you remove the green condom on the bulb and color it with a Sharpie marker.
Try the license plate lights, and maybe the reverse lights.
I tried doing this with my 2004 Solara but the motherboard looks nothing like this. There’s no bulbs at all
Hey man,
I got Camry 2000. I took the first two screw on top off. But I can't get the plastic part off! It's like stuck! And I feel like if I force it it will break the plastic! Any ideas? Is it because the heat has melted it in and I just need to pry it a bit?
+speedkar99 can this process work on solara 04 coupé ????
+Charles myd I think that one has LEDs soldered to the board. Check Toyota nation Camry forums, there was a DIY with someone who changed Thiers on a gen5 Camry.
did you ever find out I your 04 has them soldered to the board or not I have the same car and want to change my lights
Are those T10 Wedge?
#194 for the instrument cluster illumination and #74 for the indicator warning lights.
Will this work for a 04 solara ?
No, that uses LEDs
@@speedkar99 anyway to change LEDs
can I do this myself?
+Truth Seeker Yes!
do you know the size / type of bulb for the gear/shifter indicator lights?
74
Or 194
eBay.
You need five 194 5 SMD LED bulbs.
where did you get the lights from
is it the same for a 2001 lexus es300?
No. The Lexus uses a back lit cluster that's lit by a florescent tube. If yours is blown, you need to change the tube. Check out this video on how I disassembled the cluster: DIY Odometer Reprogramming
speedkar99 Thanks a lot man, i wish i wwouldve read your reply before i tried it. All i did was disconnect the cluster from the car and pop open the back. After i didnt see any bulbs i just put it all back together and now the speedometer and rpm needles do no turn on. I didnt disconnect anything from the actual cluster.
Willy Valdez Also the rpm needle goes up and down wildly, the speedometer one works properly it just does not light up.
Willy Valdez
You probably have a loose connection where you disconnected the cluster from the wiring harness. Make sure all the wiring is tight and snug and try again.
I did that because I thought about that too but all the harnesses are tight and properly connected.
Search on eBay for "194 5 SMD LED white". Works out better if you buy them in bulk.
thank u my lights ar not working so ima change them asap
hey it dosnt apply to 2003 camry
Applies to Gen 1 Solara (99-03) and Gen 4 Camry (97-01).
speedkar99
you have it posted in the drop-down as 99-2003 for the Solara and then in the vid you state its the same for the Camry. just a little confusion there. maybe when cross referencing models specify exact years for both just a thought
Five bulbs.
Ebay.
Hey thanks for the help, although i didn't need the type 74 leds, just with the regular leds worked fine. Here's a before and after of my 2001 camry's instrument cluster:
www.dropbox.com/sc/wg2gyjne6ayksmx/AADx65Qdgy2g2YLaDYojurABa
Looks great. Is there still a greenish tinge?
Not a all, is bright white! I showed all my friends here at Dominican Republic they all liked it
This will not work on the 2003 Camry. The 2003 year is completely different then the cluster shown and the dash bulbs cannot be replaced. If you know of away to change them show me.
Your right the 2003 Camry is an entirely different cluster.
It uses surface mount LED's that are soldered to the board. You can find replacement LED's (I don't remember the exact model) and solder them in to replace burnt LED's or change the color.
20 SMD's won't fit in the cluster.
.Hi you can get a new one from eBay but then you got to do millage correction. Or you can get old one fixed.
Hope this helps www.upfix.com
