Mrauk U and The Kingdom of Arakan (Rakhine)
A talk by Dr Jacques P. Leider
Mrauk U was the capital of the kingdom of Arakan (Rakhine State) for over 300 years. Compared to Venice, Amsterdam and Lisbon in its heyday in the 17th century, Mrauk U is today a provincial town with dozens of pagodas and temples that recall its great past. The opening of Myanmar, after 2011, generated international interest for hitherto little-known archaeological and historical sites in Myanmar. Yet, the ongoing Rakhine State crisis that mixes inter-ethnic conflict, state-ethnic conflict, humanitarian and rights issues, has largely prevented the development of tourism in Myanmar’s western region. Against a background of contemporary challenges, this lecture focuses on the complexity of Mrauk U’s past between Mughal India and the Burmese kingdoms. Its position at the cultural frontier between South and Southeast Asia, and its maritime context within the Bay of Bengal, invite comparisons with other Buddhist kingdoms in Southeast Asia where land and sea were associated in complex ways. The preparation of Mrauk U’s candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status has stimulated new research, resulting in renewed understanding of the city’s urban planning, including important hydrological and defensive works. The presentation will highlight the current state of academic knowledge and introduce the original character of Rakhine civilisation.
Dr Jacques P. Leider is a historian of Southeast Asia whose research work has focused on the early modern history of Arakan (Rakhine State) and Myanmar. He studied at the Sorbonne University and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) in Paris, where he submitted his doctoral dissertation on the history of the Mrauk U kingdom. Before joining the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), he taught at Chulalongkorn University in the late 1990s. For several years he lived and worked in Yangon, where he opened the first EFEO office in 2001. He is the current head of the EFEO offices in Yangon and Bangkok. During his assignment in Chiang Mai (2008-12), he oversaw the building of the new EFEO research library on Buddhist and Southeast Asian studies. In his current position, he is the Scientific Coordinator of CRISEA (Competing Regional Integrations in Southeast Asia), a project supported by the European Union.

Mrauk U was the last capital city of Kingdom of Arakan (Rakhine). Till today, it has live under the heart of the Arakanese people, who managed to carry out the history of the kingdom and their way of life. Thanks for the video.

I was intereated to listen this presentation as I come from Chittagong. My native language is Chittagong language. It is clear from this discussion that the decline or fall of the kindom of Arakan lies in the king's brutal betrayal to the Mughal Prince Shah Suja who took refuge to the king. The very important fact the presenter didn't put light on is that the king was greedyly looked on the so beautiful wife and daughers of the Prince. He killed Prince Shah Suja along with his family and other companions upon refusal when the king wanted to marry Suja's beautiful daughter. This was the same Prince Suja (who was the governor of Mughal Chittagong) who helped the Arakan King to regain his Kingdom by fighting back the Burmese King. That time Arakan King took refuge to Governor Prince Suja in Chittagong after being defeated by the Burmese King. The brutal act of massacre of the Suja's family and companion had a mixed reaction between the Muslims and the Buddhist inhabitants of the kingdom's capital Mrauk U and which sparked the riot between them. Now, I got the point, the base, why the inhumane Buddhists of Rakhine state is brutally killing and ethnic cleansing the Rohingya people now..

The kingdom of Arakan existed way before 8th century and it used to be a place where people used to trade like the Arabs who traded in the region in the 8th till the 17th century

I enjoyed every bit of this episode as I was enlightened by a scholar about the history of Chittagong and Arakan Kingdom. People of Chittagong and Rohingya people from Arakan have very similar language and now I know the long intertwined history in between Chittagong, Bengal and Arakan. Unfortunately, current military junta in Burma expelling brown Rohingya people citing illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though they have been living in Arakan for centuries. It would have been interesting to discuss about the dynasties such as Chandra dynasty that controlled general areas of Arakan; even before Arakan became a kingdom.

They are chittagonians who want to identify as rohingyas. They moved from chittagon so no wonder they have 95% same language. They lived in chittagon for centuries but not in arakan. While they don't even have similar languages with arakan how they live in arakan for centuries. It is very clear they are ethinc bengalis.how you confused by their propaganda.

They can't read sanskirts and their ancestors did not know chandra dynasty while arakan know it and arakan ancestors told many myths about chandra dynasty.
