I read his book 'the long way' when it first came out. I was with him all the way via his book and he took me out of my 'dark days' I lapsed into at the time.

His brother had commited suicide after having killed the old vietnamese man who was the local spiritual leader. Colonial and civil war was so cruel that he took a lifetime to recover.
