- Our Yesterdays Lengthen Like Shadows by Samuel Hazo was the ninth piece played by the Jefferson Forest Wind Symphony at the VMEA conference. The song was guest conducted by the composer, Samuel Hazo.
The story Hazo wrapped this piece around is outstanding. He had us play the song, and then he told us the story, and had us play the song again.. I have never heard such dramatic change in the way a group of people played their instruments in my life. It was amazing. I'll never forget it.
this is the best definition of life, starts out slow, simple then it gets more and more complex, and that one note that is carried out through our the whole song😳
That note is E Flat. It represents that ever growing shadow. Every part plays it at one point or another
Beautiful piece of music, It's amazing what you can say in only 74 measures!!!
We're playing this at my high school. We also played it at this years county band festival. I love it soooo much :D
I love Hazo's ballads. Finishing them always feels like finishing a good book series
My 8th grade band is play this this year! I'm so excited to perform it!
While cleaning my band hall (MS Band Director) this was playing on my computer. I cried.
Oh my gosh I play this my junior year, and this song give me chills down my spine and it so good and it so good,I want to conduct this piece again
I'm playing this piece for my Symphonic Band! :-)
theres nothing like listening to this piece while your there playing it. you get the full effect
We are performing this in spring.
I hope to live up to it's full potential.
Tell me about it. I played timpani in this recording and I gotta say it gave me chills and still does today when I hear it.
this piece is so lovely and well arranged. and i thought the oboeist solo at the end added a melancholic touch to the music
I'm getting ready to play this at the NM All-State concert this weekend. I play the flute, and am so excited to play this amazing piece...the only part I'm not looking foward to playing is the 32nd notes at 2:40. Yikes! :P
my high school band is playing this. its so pretty. but, i'm really nervous because its my first concert playing oboe (i'm switching from clarinet) and i'll have to preform this song, solo and all, after only 1 month of lessons. any tips?!?
so excited to play this piece with my 8th grade band!!🎷
Took me a while to load this since I moved recently and don't have fast internet anymore, and was wondering why this was in my history. But my heart lifted when I recognized it! I played this in my school band when I was in middle school, and the thing I most remember is the part I played (Baritone/Tuba) at 3:10 , along with the singing at the end we all joked around about. Great memories! Thanks for keeping this up!
@KoolitsKitKat ~ My wind ensemble just performed this and like 6 other pieces of his with him today. He's such a great guy and it was an honor to work with him. We had practiced with him all week and everyone enjoyed him so much.
Playing piccolo for this in my school band :)
+Catie Monroe? best of luck! i played this last year and from what i remember, i had a hard time hitting some of the notes at the right octave so i took a bunch of it down. i mean, i really wasn't as comfortable with the piccolo as i am now, so all the songs i played ended up like that, but depending on how much you play i guess you'll be fine. kind of just go for it
Abe Lincoln Lover Thanks! I'm pretty comfortable with it. I started picc in like June. I also play the Stars and Stripes forever picc solo. I'm doing pretty well with it so far. But octave jumps are a pain
What a coincidence do find you here...
MC ChrisB Yo. Do you play in Our yesterdays?
Yes.
this song is soo beautiful
playing this on bass clarinet in my schools symphonic band. :)
Bass clarinet fam!!
@otakukid911 That's shitty luck....unfortunately I get bad luck too, before every concert I play, it has to go in for repairs because it wouldn't play :( Then I have to borrow an oboe :P
@bpckplay92 I'm sure by the time I respond, you've gotten much better but still, don't be afraid. Just try to practice as much as possible and maybe even perform mini concerts for friends or family to help prepare for solos such as ones like this.
@XBIEBERchickk10X So how did the concert go?
i loved this. I was happy to have had 2nd Clarinet in this xD
HAHA SAME the first part looks wayyy to hard 😂😂
PICCOLO PART RIGHT HERE!
3:31 to the end is just so good
I wouldn't mind if this song was the last sound I ever heard.
Im playin this for my peabidy wind band
same
+Tomas Germanas same
0:45 4:10
I played this for a voluntary group, which is cool accept when it's full of people who screw around and can't take singing seriously
horn 1>all other parts
yes
the oboeist at the end wasnt particularly pleasant
he/se was out of tune, not sweet at all, and had zero vibrato
=S
Mark Piasecki that’s an oboe for you
