OHHH I'm so excited! I was just gifted with some desert ironwood and I'm so glad I watched your video. I did not want to risk messing it up before I began working with it. I am going to wait until I have finished a few of my sculpture classes before I break it out.
Thanks for sharing! I like working with ironwood as well and did not come across any problems when paying attention to not overheat it. However I often finish it with adding just 2-3 very short rubs with danish oil. With buffing compound I often struggle with the result feeling somewhat sticky but that may just be related to not using exactly the right compound. So I just buff with wax. 🙋🏻♀️Anna
i have never had a problem cutting, drilling or shaping any kind of wood or metals.you just have to use the right tools.and one more thing YOU CANNOT STABILZED IRONWOOD,IT WON'T GO THUR AND IT DOESN'T NEED IT.GOOD VIDEO
Great video! You left out the part about ironwood smelling like cat piss when you work it! I absolutely love ironwood and use it all of the time but I prefer honduran rosewood for the smell and it is equally as stable. Keep up the great work! See you around
Minwax will go over anything; it’s more of a coating that sits on top of the handle in comparison to an oil that penetrates the surface. It’s a very low protection finish though; it doesn’t take much to take off a wax; unfortunately. Linseed oil is garbage. It makes wood so pretty but offers less protection than wax lol
Thank you! I really appreciate it! I think it would make a gorgeous looking cutting board, BUT, I think it would be far too harsh on a knife's cutting edge haha. Something much softer would be better suited for the job in my opinion 😊
Search 'arizona ironwood' on Google or 'ironwoodman' on instagram. I love buying from him because you see what you buy. No crossing fingers and hoping for good figure!
I haven’t tried it myself on desert ironwood; but I do imagine it would work just as well as it does on other woods. Particularly if you landed a piece with a lot of metallic qualities to it. Steel wool severs wood fibers in a cleaner fashion than sand paper - in my experience. Definitely worth a try - worst comes to worse you can always switch back to paper if you don’t like how the steel wool turns it out!
This is extremely helpful, thank you
Glad it was helpful! Best wood there is for small things!
Awesome video, awesome knife!
Been looking for a video like this one. Thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it!
Love your videos. Very informative!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it :)

What kind of sculptures do you do? That’s pretty awesome: I dream of ironwood sculptures but I am nowhere near the wood carver to do that!

WD-40 works great for getting excess buffing compound off pretty much anything! That's probably the sticky stuff you've felt😊
Fine art!
Thank you so much 😀

Yeah it's too dense/oily for resin to penetrate rendering stabilization pretty much impossible. Same with most true rosewoods
gorgeous work
Thank you so much! :)
Thank you! Great video.
I have some desert ironwood for knife scales and wasnt sure how it would finish out.
Know I know.
I am glad you enjoyed it! :)

Lol you are right! I did forget to mention its incredibly odd smell. Guess I just got used to it haha
@@eksshop4845 good to know...thank you...
I have an old timer knife .wood has such a reflective Quality .....looks amazing
It definitely can! Each piece of wood is so unique; it takes a rare eye to pick it out!
Very nice knife handle!
Thank you so much! 😊
I usually use that minwax on most of my knife handles. It seems to work better for most woods I use vs. the linseed oil.

Great video. I like how thorough you are and the finished products are gorgeous.
How is this wood for cutting boards?
Thank you! I really appreciate it!

Where would you say is the best place to get this wood?

Does fine steel wool work on it as well for finishing?
I haven’t tried it myself on desert ironwood; but I do imagine it would work just as well as it does on other woods. Particularly if you landed a piece with a lot of metallic qualities to it.

Does beeswax work?
It would not be my first pick, but yes it can. I think furniture wax or gunstock wax is a far superior choice
Be ready to replace sanding disks/belts at a moment's notice...
It loves to clog up anything. That's why I suggested to use a belt cleaner - it at least improves the life of your belt lol
